2008-05-08 NEC - Groningen

This is a first leg play off fixture that will decide who will face the loser of the play off games between Heerenveen and NAC in an attempt to secure one UEFA-Cup ticket.

NEC has been very strong at home the last half of the season and is in good form, and at first glance picking the home win might seem like a good bet here. There is something stirring in Groningen though. After the bad last weeks of the regular competition in which nothing seemed to work, they were plagued by injuries and had nothing to play for really, because they were already firmly fixed in 7th place, they could now be on the verge of a strong comeback and a strong end run. Just in time striker Marcus Berg, midfielder Yevgeni Levchenko and now defender Gibril Sankoh (all very important players) have returned to the team after injury and the team and club seem to be in very good spirits. The hard fought win over Utrecht only improved this. Coach Jans has said that Groningen will aggressively go after the win tonight and put NEC under pressure, and an in form and eager Groningen has quality enough to make it very difficult for NEC.

Striker Lens of NEC, who is out on loan from AZ, has just heard he will return to the Alkmaar club next season. He now knows he will certainly not play any European Football because of this, maybe this will have a small effect on him. NEC beat Roda JC in the last round, but they didn't really play that well, even in their home game. NEC's last home defeat dates back to the 16th of February, but these games in the regular season must be seen apart from this one. These are the play offs, these games stand alone, and maybe it is time for another defeat. Here I see a game between a team on the end of a good run (NEC) against a side on the beginning of one (FCG). Betting on a straight away win could be too risky though, because the teams seem to be evenly matched and NEC still has the home advantage. I can see Groningen getting at least a tie from this game though, so at a (fairly high) odd of 1.78 picking the x2 at small stakes seems like a good bet.

Pick: DA (x2), Odds: 1.78, Stake: 4, Bookmaker: Unibet FT 1-0 pick lost

NEC are the most in-form team in the league in the last third of the regular season, in the play-offs started well again with 2 wins over Roda,so the home win looks good. Groningen imo won't defend, they've got good attacking options, Berg was cleverly saved for this stage. I expect an Over with guests to score, at home they are very strong and an away goal is vital, but I still think NEC have more power and momentum, so HW too.
Saw both Heerenveen vs Ajax in 2 legs, as well as NAC getting demolished at home by Twente. True, Breda were a man down early, but their Manager never had the guts to go ''all or nothing'', despite the handicap - already being 4-0 down on aggregate and a man down he kept a slow and toothless scheme with only 1-2 men as forwards. Twente took all the advantage from such approach - had they put some more effort in the last 15 mins everyone from the team could have been on the score sheet. Watch out for Twente vs Ajax!!! No wonder their Manager is taking over in Schalke...
Hope this will change tonight as NAC had some great periods during the season. Heerenveen imo should win convincingly, guests do not have good discipline and tactics to take a point here - to me it all started going downhill for them when they were beaten by Ajax at home 2-3. Watched the players devastated after a game they deserved to win.

Groningen started with very attacking line-up, might go wrong with this one, shame I had it in a double with Heerenveen...

Hi, anybody with any team news ahead of Twente's game tonight please?
I think maybe that Twente have a slight psychological ledge over Ajax with their recent 2 1 win over them and also playing at home their record is awesome! Ajax of course have also been playing well but I am seriously considering this game for the Twente win with the DNB option...
What do the Dutch league experts think please...

Yes I know what you mean about Twente but then again I saw Ajax play about three weeks ago and I was also very impressed with thier performance. That is why I was after some very latest player info from Holland or any other information that may help the decision...

FC Groningen - NEC Nijmegen

This is the returnmatch in the 2nd round of the playoffs to gain 1 Uefa Cup spot. First match ended in a 1-0 victory for Nec this week. So what to do here? Home advantage is the key in this match. Groningen are on their way back with striker Marcus Berg back in action since 2 weeks. Since his return you see a bit of a revival of the team, after their poor second half of the season. Sankoh and Kruiswijk are both suspended (key defenders), but their replacements Cahais and Svejdik have proven this season that they can easily fill up their places, so that should not be a big difference. Nec played some good football in the 1st match against Groningen, but that was mostly due to the red card of Sankoh, since the red card Nec produced many many chances.. Now we have the match in the Euroborg, where the crowd will be fired up, it is an evening match, and that makes a lot of difference in Euroborg. The atmosphere in eveningmatches in Euroborg is mainly much higher than the afternoon matches, although in afternoonmatces Euroborg is also a great 12th man. So go for the home advantage in this one, medium stakes here.

Pick: H, Odds: 2.20, Stake: 5, Bookmaker: Unibet

Well done to everyone on Twente Groningen to win is already looking better. NEC are still in form, very dangerous on counters, remember well how they turned the game being 2-0 down away to Heerenveen. The Over is not priced well for this stage. IMO both teams will score, but that's only priced at 1,50 at my local. Still not sure which to go for - HW, Over or Goal/Goal...
