ReasoningIt seems to me that Northern Illinois will be overmatched as they take on a TCU team who has been playing well all year. Northern Illinois will try to run with Garrett Wolfe (NCAA leading rusher) who is a legitimate NFL candidate but will be met by the 4th best defense in the country (67.6 rushing yards per game), and overall 9th best (249.5 yards per game). TCU is a team that was able to hold one of the country's best rushing offenses (Air Force) to just 98 yards in a 38-14 blowout. They also held the 3rd best passing offense in the country (Texas tech) to 204 yrd in a 12-3 win. TCU should win this game easily with their defense, and have a solid QB who has scored points on tougher defenses than NIU.

ReasoningOregon has allowed over 30 points in their last 3 games (all loses) BYU's QB John Beck 3510 yards, 30 TDS and only 6 INT's, this BYU offense managed to score 31 pts on stingy TCU and should have no problem scoring on a leaky Oregon defense who come into this game with 3 straight loses. Byu has 9 straight wins and will have plenty of BYU support as this game is in nearby Las Vegas. (Mormons in Vegas hmmmmm) In any event, while Oregon has faced better competition, BYU has too many weapons and will want to break their 4 game bowl losing skid. This game should be high scoring (not sure about 62) but I see BYU winning it also comfortably.

EventTroy vs Rice
SelectionUnder 54
Strength10/10
Date22/12/2006
Bookmaker/PricePinnacle Sports @ 2.01 (Back)
ReasoningThese two teams will be desperate for bowl wins in New Orleans. Troy is a young school who joined Division I-A six years ago, while Rice has sucked for ages and this is their first bowl game in 45 years! Both these teams are not all that impressive on offense:

Total Yards RICE 366.0 / 51st
TROY 332.6 / 80th
Passing Yards RICE 227.3 / 47th
TROY 205.7 / 66th
Rushing Yards RICE 138.7 / 55th
TROY 126.9 / 70th
Points Scored RICE 27.4 / 40th
TROY 23.2 / 64th

Rice will try to eat up the clock and run with +1000 yds rb Quinton Smith and +1000yds wr Jarret Dillard.

I think Troy will figure out that Dillard needs to be be double covered considering he has 83 catches and the number 2 receiver has 32 catches. I think Troy will be prepared as they have been solid on defense allowing just 22.7 ppg, while Rice is really poor allowing 32.6 ppg. But for me, I do not see Troy scoring much as they are a very low key offense. I think this game will be tight as both programs are looking for mileston wins and actually, I think Troy can pull off the mild upset here though I feel better about the total.

ReasoningThese two small football programs have produced some great results against upper echelon teams (South Florida beat W. Virginia, ECU beat NC State & Virginia). What stands out is the two defense for these teams. The fact that South Florida could slowdown the potent West Virginia offense says a lot as do their stats: 17.8 ppg, while ECU is solid allowing just 20.5 ppg. These two teams did not duck anyone as they both had very competitive schedules and played well all year. Offensively, other than the two solid QB, no one really stands out. Matt Grothe for the Bulls can run and pass as he has over 2500 passing yds and over 600 yrds on the ground. Overall these two teams are 67th and 69th in ppg 22.8 and 22.9 per game and so there is not much between these two teams. This should be a close, low scoring affair.

ReasoningSure New Mexico is playing a bowl game in... New Mexico but they are 3-4 at home this year. The lobos are 4-9 ATS in their last 13 home games as well. Plus they have not won a bowl game in 45 years. San Jose State did a complete 180 as they have been solid all year and almost beat Boise State dropping it 23-20. New Mexico's season has to be considered a dissapointment at 6-6 including a pathetic loss to Portland State. Both teams share two common opponents in New Mexico State and San Diego State and both SJS and NM beat those two soundly. Also interesting to note that is that SJS coach Dick TOmey is 11-2 all time vs New Mexico. One final stat, SJS is the 15th best rushing team in the country and New Mexico's defense is not all that strong and can be run on (Byu, Air Force, etc.)

ReasoningTulsa dropped 3 of their last 4 before this game and historically that type of trend bodes poorly before a bowl game. Meanwhile Utah comes winners of 3 of 4 though they dropped a heartbreaker to in state rival BYU 33-31. Both teams boast impressive QBs and offense but I am much more impressed with utah's schedule and they are no strangers to bowl games and have won 5 in a row.

ReasoningThis one should be a fun game to watch. Hawaii has scored less than 32 points just once all year, but they are facing a solid ASU pass defense who have a lame duck coach (yup fired before the bowl game). ASU can put up some points but Hawaii will still be able to pass on the Sun Devils. Hawaii has the number one offense in the country at 47.3 ppg. They have put points on decent teams and have an average defense which shouldbe enough to beat an Arizona State team who clearly expected better this year. You can say yeah ASU will win one for the coach BS but I dont see it against a dynamic Hawaii team playing in..... Hawaii.

ReasoningIMO this game should be a rout as I do not feel Middle Tennessee should even be playing a bowl game. Statistically speaking this is a terrible offense, actually (105th in the country) facing the 29th best offense in the country in CMU led by QB Dan Lefevour. On the year, Lefevour has thrown for +2600 yds with 25 tds and only 10 ints. MTSU is 54th overall on defense and will have a tough time against a team that has beaten Boston College, Wstern Michigan and Ohio. All these teams are playing bowl games. Meanwhile MTSU has not beaten a team with a winning record all year.

Bookmaker/PricePinnacle Sports @ 2.00 (Back)
ReasoningA contest between two very talented teams who have had very dissapointing seasons. Florida State, with a loss will end the year with a losing record for the 1st time in 25 years. Both FSU and UCLA have beaten some pretty solid competition while losing to teams they generally would dominate. If I had to pick a winner for this one, I would lean to FSU since they are better on defense and I think will try to run the ball and control the clock. That being said, I like the under for several reason:

Despite their tough schedules (both teams have played 4 ranked teams each), they have managed to play excellent defense. Florida State is allowing just 278.92 ypg which is 15th in the country and allowing 19.3 ppg (32nd). With a defense like that you expect to go better than 6-6, well their offense is awful. They are 80th in yards per game (39th via the air, and 103rd rushing) and score an average of 26.6 ppg - which should be even worse as they scored 106 points in two games (vs Duke & Rice). UCLA also has a solid defense, they allow just 17.6 ppg (27th) and allow 304.83 ypg (32nd). UCLA was able to shutdown USC who needed the game to ensure a Championship game, holding the Trojans to 9 points and tonight face a dull offense with no standouts. On Offense, UCLA is even more bland then FSU, they average just 22.7 ppg (71st) and 62nd in rushing and 71st in passing.

When I look at these statistics, they certaintly point to an under trend and the last piece at least for me is the weather in San Francisco (I have learned my lessons) -

"The rain in San Francisco should stop by Wednesday afternoon, leaving a wet field for a game that kicks off at 5 p.m. local time. The temperature should be slightly above 50 degrees at the beginning of the game, dropping slightly below 50 as the game continues.

The wind in the Bay Area will measure above 20 mph through most of the day on Wednesday, dropping to about 15 mph around the time of kickoff."

ReasoningTwo 6-6 teams play in the Independence Bowl tommorrow and it should be an interesting matchup. Alabama has already fired their coach and will be led by their interim coach. While OSU it seems is jut happy to be in a bowl game. Both these teams have had incredibly tough schedules and there record is not really not indicative of how good these teams are, especially Alabama. The Crimson Tide have loses to Florida, Tennesse, Auburn, and LSU - all excellent teams. The Cowboys have loses to Texas A&M, Oklahome, and Texas (all ranked) and beat #20 ranked Nebraska. The story for me in this game will be the Alabama defense which is 18th (yard per game) in the country depite their record and the tough division they play in. The tide managed to beat Hawaii 25-17, which is extremely impressive considering how prolific the Warrior's offense is. Despite everything, Bama has not allowed more than 28 points all year in a single game and are allowing just 18.0 ppg (29th). OSU is 79th in ppg allowe at 25.2 ppg, but I am not too concerned since Alabama;s offense is just average - 59th in total yards. I think both these teams will try to run the football, eat some clock but I am confident that total will not be hit. OSU is the 8th best rushing team in the country while Alabama is 29th against the run so I think Bama should be able to Neutralize the Cowboys. For the Crimson, John Parker Wilson is a solid QB but I would not count on him to have a prolific day, they are a balanced team and will also try to run with Kenneth Darby. BTW Alabama has not had a game hit 50 all year, OSU is used to shootouts, but against good defense they struggle - only 21 pts vs Oklahoma in a loss and Only 10 points in a loss to Texas.
