My first impressions with hand 1 was what a terrible overbet by yourself , (BTW I'm not condoning his call off it either ) - why such a large bet with QQ ? - Surely that type of bet can only be a loser in the long term - i.e normally your only going to get called by AA,KK or maybe AK. Or did his stack size sway the decision ?

Second Hand - nice play throughout, he'd obviously realised you were drawing to either flush/strait but probably not both - and his bet wasn't going to lose you at that stage.

Third hand - poor play by FULLYBCN

Fourth and Fifth Hands - Very similar betting patterns with differing outcomes. I would have questioned why you would continue betting in face of strength and questioned what hands you thought you could be beating in both - but thats obviously shows how big the gap is between my levels and these
Not really certainly not great play but the only thing i would say is you've got to be in the game to understand.

The first hand was taking advantage of someone seveley on tilt he would call with any two cards, the other 2 players would only call with AA, we all seemed to understand what was going on.

Ithink the next 3 hands were pretty standard

5th hand he was trying to bully every pot so you must take a stand sometimes, i hit the flop and was convinced i was winning.

Sometimes the hand history doesnt reveal the whole story.

Hi.

Ive read this thread with interest and would like to ask my own few questions if thats possible...

I am trying to get into poker and having bought plenty of books about it, do you actually reckon they help alot or is most of it down to personal instincts or feelings etc?

I have felt in the past I am more of a tournament player and tend to play alot of Sit & Go's. I have tried to tinker with cash games but have yet to get to grips with it. Were you always a cash game player or have you tried with STT's etc?

Thanks.

I personally don't read books but i understand how it can help someone starting out, the problems i see with " book players " is they become robotic and easy to read ( pardon the pun). So long as you can play with your natural instincts and thoughts there is no harm reading a book and taking something thing from it. I am not ante reading, Some of the guys who write books didnt read poker books to get where they are, its a kinda perk of being famous. The best thing you can do is play and learn from your mistakes IMO.

I am an all round player i can play stts, mtts or cash, but cash is the most lucrative if your a consistant winning player.

I prefer a certain Mr Ingram myself, good old red faced Winston but Jack Jarvis fits perfectly.

And cheers for the quick reply to my questions. Appreciated, I am going to ask a few more, don't want to make it a regular occurence as it will seem like im being a pest. Anyway here goes...

I read you started off at the low limits but it seems you have built up so quickly and to play 25/50 quid blinds is pretty amazing imo especially as you seem so down to earth.

Anyway do you work to a bankroll? I have heard alot of the pro's saying you should only play £1/2 with a minimum roll of £3'000 (it may even be more, I can't quite remember.)

I mean £3'000 is like £300'000 to me. Bear in mind I slave my arse off for £40 a day at the moment.

As I said, I want to start in poker and take it seriously in my spare time but I don't think I have the bankroll to start and I certainly can't see me grinding away at the low limit levels as I have always said there is too much luck in those games. I think my minimum is .50/£1 so what would your suggestion be for a minimum bankroll?

And for STT's or MTT's what would be your bankroll suggestion?

And also, do you recommend any sites in particular?

Thanks again.

The trouble with Steph is he looks and acts like that when he is sober and I think in those GUK videos he hadn't had a drink by then and just through acting that way at the table (and being Scottish) everyone assumes he's bluted.

It can be a good image to have live but bloody useless online.

As play playing when drunk, I've been there done that and will probably never go back to it. I very rarely play now unless I am feeling fit and well with a clear head.

I dont mind you asking me questions at all, but i can only t3ell you the answers from my experience perhaps some of the other guys in here will give their views too.

Bankroll - ok i never adhered to any bankroll rules i just did what felt right, but i never put my roll in jeopardy. I think the rule is min 20 x BB. but we are all different and sometimes ( if you can afford it) its nice to take a flyer at the next level. If you feel under pressure their or take a hit move back down and grind your roll up again. Its the best way to move dipping your feet in the big game , go back down then try again, eventually you will feel settled their and you do it all again ( when you feel ready).

I've always said you need to be a consistent winning player by that what i mean is if you play 30 sessions a month you must win 25 of them ( cos when you lose its usually more than when you win) at whatever level your at. I know what you mean about the lower levels but i won a lot of money at .12/.25 so if your games right it can be done and you can learn where your weaknesess are without it costing you too much.

As for Stt's and Mtt's i think there are better qualified people in here to answer that than me, because i have never had to rely on them to make cash so i can afford to play whatever ones i want.

Recommending a site,I think this is down to the individual and what your after. Not sure if i'm allowed to do this but i will give you my preference. I have always played on boss media and i play on Virgin poker. I've been happy there and the poker manager is really good to deal with, which suits me.

You have made the first right move by coming to this forum as their are a lot of knowledgable people on here, that will certainly give you whatever help they can.

PS i cant splel either

Not wanting to hijack The Moles thread, but, if you cannot beat players who make a lot of big mistakes why do you think you can beat players who make fewer smaller mistakes? (yes there can be difficulties with playing this kind of player, but if you cannot work out how to beat them, that means the flaws in your game are too big, and/or your game is too inflexible to adjust to your opponents).

The lower levels can be beat - here I went from, literally, nothing to €1000 in under 3 months. GaF's Nothing to Something thread (Current Bank €1007.85)

There's a great thread here posted by Valiant23 -How To Start Out in Poker Without Risking Your Own Cash - there are poker rooms falling over themselves to give you money to play with them - why would you want to risk any of your own cash?

I understand what you mean and cheers for the links, I'll have a look.

As I said I am more of a tournament man and prefer STT's but I do understand the big money seems to be at the cash tables and thats what we are all after is it not? ... the big money.

I have tinkered with them in the past and have always found myself doing much better at .50/1 games and ive even done ok at the 1/2 games. When I go down to .10/20 etc though I just never seem to click. Maybe its a concentration thing or such.
