Default Sunglasses?

Ok I know a few people might think I might start talking about the pros/cons of wearing sunglasses, but taking a little different approach here.

Well my brother just got back from Spain, & I did get a lovely pair of sunglasses out of it from the duty free, which did get me thinkin about how (no need for insults lads) strong* a poker image i had while looking in the mirror.

Now I didn't think i'd go into the local casino with them on, would merely catch a few giggles at me at best in there, but did notice something in the mirror (apart from the gorgeous fella looking back at me of course )

There is a glare off the sunglasses, whereas I could see everything in the mirror quite vivid. Which reminded me of the last pair of sunglasses I had, on a trip to Dublin with a buddy, where he kept seeing which card I had next in Top Trumps and played his stat accordingly. So brings me to a little devious question, any lot of you devils use this to your advantage? If so, how and why? Or is the 'why' obvious?

Just thinking and I know from watching the WSOP that a lot of players wear sunglasses there. Is it something to use to your advantage? Or do you feel it is bad etiquette to keep an eye open? Do you feel it's the player's fault in the first place?

Have fun lads

*By Strong i mean how still and lifeless players like Chris Ferguson look while playing. Quite like a predator stalkin' it's prey until it strikes!

Does the use of sunglasses at a poker table actually make a diference? I'm not one for looking out for "tells" at a table as I get caught up thinking about too much before I decide what i'm doing. My cards, position, odds etc. is enough as it is!

I know what you mean about people sniggering. I was at Westcliffe casino in Southend a few weeks ago with a couple of mates for a MTT freezeout. a guy got on our tables with a hoody and sunglasses on. One of my more "gobby" mates said to him

- "Sunglasses eh?"
- Guy nods
- "Can you take them off please or I wont know what cards you've got"
- "shut up you sarcy c**t"

Southend eh?

Also, whats with the iPod use at a table? It obviously helps people as they are used so frequently but whenever I stick mine on when i'm playing online, it just distracts me. I'd be hopeless at a live table when you're cant hear the calls/banter etc.

In my opinion it does to some players, i dont want to see every sod in a casino wearing glasses, would kill poker really. But in my above post i made reference to Chris Ferguson, i've been a big fan of his for the last 3-4 years and i think the glasses do make a difference. He just doesn't flinch, i remember seeing a clip of him calling/bluffing/raising and each time his movements were the exact same, have done a quick search but can't find it on the net. I'm a big fan of his though and think he is a fantastic player.

where does this stop?

excuse the random wandering into the poker section with little (you may say 'no-') knowledge but...

can you wear masks for example? or are there rules stating that glasses are ok? how much of your face can you 'hide'?

if you went onto a table wearing a Scream mask and sunglasses, would this actually be allowed? (probably a daft question, but i'm not from round these parts y'see!)

It doesn't mate!

Let me show you something from last year's WSOP...

This is "Joe Sebok" dressed as spiderman at the World Series, he was allowed to play. I remember seeing this and just finding it on google, im pretty sure there was another costume too, anyone?

Anyway that pretty much sums it up, you can hide as much of your face as you want.

i think that sunglasses do give a bit of a advantage but only against very good players .
two reasons really ,they helps to shield your eyes as these are one of the easiest places to get visual reads on other players, and they can't see what your watching which is also handy
also some players like the ipod idea so that they dont get distracted.
in bigger tourneys (vegas especially)the hustle bustle can get a bit loud and you never know who you are getting on your table, could be mike matusow or worse could be burnley joe with your ipod on who cares.

i myself wear sunglasses in big games but not at my local £20 freeze out etc,and like most plers i like a bit of banter at the table so no ipod for me.

I can understand that wearing glasses to hide your eyes and an i-pod to help you relax/concentrate is a good idea for a proper touerney, but I will never do either anywhere else, and never at a PL game (except for a laugh).

I have to laugh at one guy who only wears his glasses when he has a monster hand, and any other time they sit on his head.

On that note Mr V, there was a guy at the Loose Cannon freeroll who turned up with 2 pairs of sunglasses. I overheard someone ask him why he had 2 pairs and he replied that when he gets pocket K's he wears one pair, when he gets pocket A's he wears the other pair. Every so often he'd put one of the pairs on and then take them off and swap them. Very amusing
