Newcastle's Colombian import MILTON RODRIGUEZ has played an significant role in next week's 2006 AFC Asian Champions League final - the last Asian Champions League competition match to be played without Australian clubs. It was Rodriguez who scored the crucial goal for South Korean side Jeonbuk Motors in its 1-0 win over Ulsan Mipo Dockyard in the 2005 South Korean FA Cup final, thereby securing a spot for Jeonbuk in the 2006 AFC Champions League. Jeonbuk have now reached the final of the AFC Champions League, where they are up against Syrian team Al Karama in a two-legged tie to be played on the 1st and 8th of November. Also Hyundai A-League Referee, Mark Shield, has been appointed to referee the second leg of the Asian Champions League Final on the 8th of November in Homs, Syria.

Before suffering a major knee injury just prior to the Hyundai A-League 2005/06 season, Mrdja scored hat-tricks in the 2005 FIFA Club World Championship Australian Qualifying Tournament (in a 4-0 win over Adelaide) and in the 2005 Pre-Season Cup (3-1 v Queensland)

At the 30 minute mark of this match, Sydney goalkeeper CLINT BOLTON is set to become the first player to play 3000 unbroken minutes - or 50 hours straight - for his team in the Hyundai A-League. Bolton has played in every minute of every match so far (33 matches) for Sydney FC since its first match in Round 1 2005/06, including the Hyundai A-League 2006 Grand Final victory over Central Coast Mariners. Only two other players, Hyuk-Su Seo (Queensland Roar - 30 matches) and Darren Bazeley (New Zealand Knights - 30 matches) have played in every minute of every match for their respective clubs since the commencement of the Hyundai A-League.

Default Re: Australian A League Round 10 - 27th/29th

Key omissions for the week

NZ Knights:
NIL

Melbourne:
Kevin Muscat - Out suspended and will be missed but Melbourne should be able to cover him easily agisnt the Knights

Necastle Jets:
NIL

Adelaide:
Nathan Burns – Has been brilliant past few weeks and will be a big loss
Angelo Costanzo - Also been brilliant in the heart of Adealide's midfield and defence and he too will be a big loss

Queensland Roar:
Simon Lynch - Missed last weeks game as injured before game, will be a loss as the Roar's leading goalkicker with three
Dario Vidosic - Youngster who has scored 2 goals for the Roar and will be missed

CC Mariners:
Andrew Clark - Will be out for two weeks with a mdeical ligament injury

Sydney FC:
Jeremy Brockie - Will be a small loss in my opinion, but went ok last week
Mark Milligan - Will be big loss to the team as provides stability

Perth Glory:
Jason Petkovic - Out for season with a broken leg and will be a big loss
Simon Colosimo - Out with hamstring for 4 weeks and huge loss to the Glory

Adelaide is probably the team affected most by missing players this week as they lose two stars of their team.

New Zealand vs Melbourne
Early kick off at 5pm Australian time so if your betting on this dont forget. Its top vs bottom on the ladder here and if recent form is anything to go by then Melbourne hsould have a big victory here. Melbourne have won 8 of 9 matches this year while New Zealand have only won 1, but have lost their past 7 in a row. Before last weekend where they scored 2 past Adelaide, they had only scored 1 goal in 8 games so goals are very tough to come by for them and they basically have got nothing up forward while Melbourne themselves are averaging 2 goals a game overall, but interestingly they average more goals away than at home. Melbourne are yet to lose a game at home also, but enough of the stats. As far as team sheets go, New Zealand who made 6 changes to its squad last week, look likely to stick with that same team this week against Melbourne. They finished the match well against Adelaide last week and Melbourne will make the long trip overseas, however these two did meet in New Zealand way back in Round 3 which Melb won 3-0. Melbourne will miss captain Kevin Muscat which is a huge loss considering he is their captain and is also one of the best players in the league, his form has been one of the main reasons of Melbournes rise to the top this year, but Steve Pantelidis will replace him and ive been very impressed by this guy so far this season. New Zealand shouldnt cause the Melbourne defence too many concerns so if Muscat was going to miss a game then this would be the best one. I favour Melbourne here.

As Melbourne are very short at $1.36 its not worth taking so i will look for better value. I like the Melb/Melb HT/FT as Melbourne are a very strong starter and have lead at halftime in 5 of their 9 matches this year. Thats paying $1.90. I will also look at backing Melbourne on the -1 Handicap but Centrebet dont have that listed on their site yet so i will have to wait. Archie Thompson to score first will be a longshot option too but thats also not listed. I will update as soon as it is, most likely tommorow knowing centrebet

Pick Melb/Melb at $1.90 - (5/10)
Pick Melbourne Handciap of -1 at ?? - (4/10) - TBA
or the ads25 longshot of:
Pick Archie Thompson to Score First at ?? - (2/10) - TBA

Newcastle vs Adelaide
Am I seeing things? Are Adelaide paying $2.55 to win this or is that a mistake?? Adelaide have won their past 3 games and have been in terrific form, they are the only team to have beaten MElbourne who have 8 wins from 9, and they knocked off the Central Coast 3 weeks ago which was a brilliant performance. They are getting alot of players back from injury or suspension now too so they will only get stronger. Newcastle were having a terrible season up until 2 weeks ago, they had not won a game in 7 matches and actually sacked their coach, in comes stand-by coach Gary van Egmond and things have turned around with 2 wins in a row which is perhaps why the odds for Adelaide are out a bit? On paper Newcastle actually have a pretty good team but they just dont seem to work well together. Columbian import Milton Rodriguez is a fantastic player, Jade North is an up and coming star of the future and playing in great form, Vaughan Coveny is playing very well while Joel Griffiths, Steven Old, Nicky Carle and Paul Okon are all champion players. So they have a good side Newcastle, for those of who that those names mean nothing to they are all very good players so Adelaide will have their work cut out, but Adelaide also have a great side and they didnt win last years minor premier for no reason. Carl Veart returned to goal scoring form last week while players such as Miachel Valkanis, Greg Owens, Travis Dodd, Spangnuolo Ross Aloisis and the very impressive Bobby Petta on the wing, Adelaide probably have the list with the most depth in the league. And if those names arent enough they also have Rob Corwaite & Shen Qu back in the team and they are the teams best players almost. This should be a ripper of a game with some great players on show, but i will be taking Adelaide here. At $2.55 i just cant let that value go against one of the leagues best teams. Dont get me wrong, Newcastle will put up a good show but it will be Adelaide that ultimately wins. Also worth noting is that Adelaide thrashed the Jets 5-1 last time they met 7 weeks ago and overall Adelaide have won every game they have played away at the Jets, Adelaide also have a 3-0-1 record against them also so they have the form. Both teams are capable of scoring alot of goals so over 2.5 looks value also but centrebet dont have this market up yet, so i will update at a later stage when its up.

Pick Adelaide to WIN at $2.55 - (6/10)
Pick OVER 2.5 Goals at ?? - (6/10) - TBA
or the ads25 longshot of:
Pick Correct score of 1-2 at $9.50

Melbourne has great away form and score freely. They average just under 3 goals a game against the Knights. The Knights have good home form this season only conceding 5 goals in total and three of those were against Melbourne, which is quite good for a team that struggle to score, yet alone win a game.

The Half-Time/Full-Time Melbourne/Melbourne looks a good bet on these stats alone.

Melbourne are missing Kevin Muscat who is their leading goal scorer, albeit majority of those goals were penalties. The Knights have an unchanged team from the one that lost 4-2 to Adelaide last week.

The Knights are back home after 3 tough games away and they always play their best football at home, at least defensively they do. Melbourne has had two tough games against Adelaide and Sydney, the latter in wet, tough, slogging conditions and they may be a little weary from that. Having said that, Melbourne are clearly a better side than the Knights and should win this quite comfortably. The Victory has taken all before them this season and have a commanding h2h record against the Knights. I expect them to win by at least 2 or 3 goals, and am steering away from the short odds for the win to try and find some value alternatives. I am going to try a couple of correct scorelines at good odds and some multibets for the round.

Well I'm going to dive straight in here and back Queensland @ 2.25 centrebet.

My ratings have them well clear, granted they have their best striker out but 2.25 still seems great value to me. Queensland only conceded one goal at home and scored 8, with Central Coast losing 4 of their 5 away matches.

Queensland really do look excellent value here.

I'm also backing Under 10.5 Corners in the New Zealand v Melbourne match as my corner ratings have this quite low.

10pts on Under 10.5 Corners (NZ v Melbourne) @ 1.87 Sportingbet

NZ have a good defence and it can be a difficult place to travel. As such I'm going to be taking the draw on the handicap (Victory -1) @ $3.75 on Centrebet.

True Oscar

NZ Knights home form reads...
0-0 - Jets
1-0 - Adelaide
0-3 - Melbourne
0-1 - Mariners
0-1 - Sydney

Only two goals total conceded against, Adelaide, Mariners and Sydney which is fair when you consider it like that.

Melbourne should score at least 2 one would think, but who knows, Queensland showed last week that strange things can happen.

NZ looked sharper last week and with Muscat out of the Victory's defence, there's some chance that the Knights could score too. At $3.75 I'd rather be backing this than the draw.

Good assessment in your A League venture and agree to some extent but I am a little wary of the Mariners as last season they were one of our better sides and they appear to be coming back to some of that form lately, with 2 wins on the trot. It took them a few games to even score hence the early losses, but after they scored their first goal they have been scoring a goal every game since, thanx in part to Damian Mori and improved offence. Their defence has been very sound except for one or two games and they are a chance IMO.
