Not much comment from me on the weekend fixtures just yet, but I'm sticking by the chances of Oxford City away at Banbury United at 5/2 with Skybet. More later.

I've several fancies - and some prices I'm itching to take - but I'll wait until remaining prices come out. The Ryman looks particularly thorny this weekend - and quite a few that look leave-alones for me. Tooting & M appear some value, but Boreham Wood's side looks interesting this season, with Mario Noto the latest to arrive. I'd really fancy the price about Horsham at Canvey Island, but Canvey may start better than predicted, but Horsham are already looking a bit depleted, with Jacob Mingle among the potential casualties. Ramsgate/AFC Hornchurch, Wealdstone/Tonbridge Angels and Staines/Billericay are others that look hard to split. In fact, only in the Dover/Harrow game can I see clear blue water between the sides, but because I've taken Dover quite heavily in the anteposts I'll probably avoid, though it is perhaps one for the accas.

Bwin's Step 4s aren't out yet, but their Step 3 stuff has some interesting plays. Dover are a meaty 1.75 at home to Harrow, and another section favourite Corby Town are coming at 1.8 for their home game against Yate Town. In the Southern they have Brackley Town as second favourites at Merthyr at 2.45. Don't see that myself - neither side has great defensive prowess, but Brackley look much the healthier going forward after a free-scoring pre-season during which they were rarely troubled. They have money to burn and David Perpuitini is their latest signing. Bwin are also best (so far) about Sutton United at Harlow Town. 2.1 isn't huge value, but they look much stronger than the home side going into this one. I'm surprised to see that Frickley Athletic - fierce old lags of the Unibond Prem - at 4.05 for the trip to a reshaped Witton Albion, who've been struggling against lower-ranked opposition in friendlies. They have some capable performers signed up such as Scott Willis, Ben Thornley and Steve Settle, though forward Kieran Lugsden is probably out of this one and they will need five or six games to bed in. Billy Heath's Frickley, who had a great second half to the season, are largely unchanged in squad terms.

Retford won at Frickley 2-0 on saturday ships, didnt go myself but by all accounts we were very worth of the victory, even though both goals were in the last 5 minutes. They did look better than worksop, but when we got the ball out wide we were far too quick for them and took advantae of the 2 average full backs they had. Frickley Athletic: Nicklin, Brough, Gowen, Walsh, Heath, Jones, Hilton, Davies, Morris, Pell, Selby. Subs: Hood, Towler, Lee, Pollock, Wilburn, White, Groome, Pierpoint, Robinson. Thats the frickley team, i presume some of them subs came on at some point though.

Yes, worthy winners by all accounts Craig, and Frickley won't be pulling up any trees this season. But then Retford would probably give Witton Albion a good game on their own patch these days. The past week for Witton has seen a defeat at Middlewitch and 6-4 loss to a Manchester City academy side. I'd make Witton Albion favourites for the league game, but I can't see that Frickley should be better than 3/1. My own price has them at 15/8

Oxford City away at Banbury United (5/2 Skybet) Promoted City are well equipped give this huge price a bit of a run. They have a decent side with wideman Mark Bell - who could be a real star this season - providing the bullets for Andy Baird, Craig Falconbridge and Yashwa Romeo. The squad isn't much changed from last season, with right back and skipper James Salusbury still there. Pre-season has gone okay, although they suffered defeats to Hinckley and Woking. Key new signing Andy Baird is in from Banbury United, where he had been a talisman for several seasons. The experienced Wayne Blossom has also gone, although manager Kieran Sullivan will be relieved that Nicky Gordon - whose goals were key at the end of last season - is staying. Narrow wins over Bedworth and Romulus are all they have to show for a pre-season blighted by injuries to their small squad. Last Saturday they played Chasetown (from a step below) and drew 0-0, despite Chasetown missing two penalties and hitting the woodwork twice. A tight match with a derby-ish atmosphere, but no way are Oxford City a 5/2 shot.

The ryman step 4's are now out on bwin, still no others as of yet. Good news today that the takeover of Retford has gone through (finally) From the Retford Times website: "Ambitious plans for Retford United will see it become the biggest community club in north Notts, according to its new investor. Retford businessman and race horse trainer, Paul Dixon (pictured), will unveil his ambitious plans for the club tomorrow evening (Friday). "Our aim is to put the club on a sound financial footing and push it forward - it has been left in a terrible state with massive debts," said Mr Dixon, speaking to the Retford Times before the announcement. "We want to get everyone in the town right behind us - a club run by the community for the community. "I am very excited about this opportunity." Former Badgers player Mr Dixon said he wants to run a 'totally transparent operation' with input from the community, supporters and sponsors connected to the club. "Alongside the men's and ladies' senior teams, there will be 20 junior teams making it the largest community football club in Bassetlaw and north Notts," he said. Mr Dixon, who will not be part of the day-to-day running of the club, will also announce 'ambitious expansion plans' at the meeting. See next week's Retford Times and visit www.thisisretford.co.uk for full details of the announcement and reaction from the club."

The only thing wrong in the article is Paul Dixon is an owner of horses, not a trainer, although with training fee's these days at around £1000+ a horse, he has around 40 or 50 horses in training, he's clearly not short of a bob or two.

Some plays at Bwin appeal. Newcastle Blue Star at 2.0 in Unibond 1 N. They are spending big and have recruited some of Gateshead's stars of last season. Rossendale are no mugs but look inexperienced against this Blue Star side. I think Warrington Town (in the same section) are worth including at 2.0 against promoted Salford City. They have brought in some decent talent over the summer, including Phil Hadland, and look set for a decent push up the table, even without injured striker Thomas Lamb. In Ryman 1 North, I can't ignore Redbridge at 2.25. Even though they have been depleted by Dean Holdsworth's departure, and face a spell rebuilding, they are far stronger than a Hillingdon side who struggle to compete at this level. Striker Leli Bajada has come in from Aveley. It's first day so some riskier numbers appeal. Shepshed Dynamo, who have been recruiting with an enhanced budget over the summer, should give odds of 3.45 a run at Stamford, though the home side do look pretty strong. (Unibond 1 South). And I think I'll have a tickle at 4.05 Durham City at Skelmersdale United. Skem are a class act, but Durham are geared up for a sustained challenge and have had a good pre-season. They are second favourites but the price is too big.

Very quickly on these two - I've a live game to watch... Brackley Town away at Merthyr Tydfil (7/5 Sportingbet) I think Brackley are stronger going into this one, after a strong preseason. They've signed well with a healthy budget and top five target. Merthyr look more capable than in recent seasons, and Garry Shepherd as brought in Sam O'Sullivan but it looks a lightish defence that might struggle to hold a strong forward line, which includes the lively Ben Mackey. Sutton United away at Harlow Town (11/10 Sportingbet) Whatever doubts I have about Sutton's title credentials at the prices offered can be set aside for this one. They'll take time to gel, but they should do okay against Ryan Kirby's spirited outfit who are struggling to get the balance right.

Ships, dont suppose you know anything about how Carlton have done over the summer, i was expecting retford to be around 1.60/1.70. Also, ill be investigating goole a little further, they've had a lot of problems off the field, if this has affected there squad building, kidsgrove have some appeal at 2.55. A quick look at the rest, spalding were terrible last year, dont know anything about the promoted glapwell but ill look more into them, and maybe there one to consider. Stocksbridge steadily improved over the course of last season, and they could continue this, i think they'll have a good year, there one to consider at 2.70 away to grantham.

Craig - I understand Carlton's squad is looking okay, but I don't think they'll threaten. New signings include Willis Francis, who's done the rounds in the Midlands and has plenty of experience. I think Bwin's prices are about right. I think Goole are starting -10, but they have a decent squad with Andy Parton back leading the line. Kidsgrove aren't a bad price, although they are a young side going mainly with local talent this season. I think you're right on Stocksbridge - they'll be very strong this season. Spalding should be a different proposition this season after signing, among others, Shaun Carey, Mark Angel and Mark Wormull. I've no idea where the budget has suddenly come from, but boss Alan Biley had about five players in June, so they've done well to get a decent squad together. However, the squad has hardly been together and it might be best to go against them early season.

Cheers for the input ships, im going with stocksbridge, and us i think Think i'll swerve goole, they'll need a good start to get rid of the deduction and did look ok in parts last season. Sounds like spalding are a watching brief aswell, im not going to risk anything early on, even if it does mean missing out on a couple of decent prices.

Some small prices appeal this weekend, though I'm not sure what I'll do with them as yet. 5/6 Carshalton at home to Margate with Paddy Power seems a mite generous, and I've already mentioned Dover Athletic, a best of 8/13. But the biggest mismatch is in the Unibond where Bradford Park Avenue host Prescot Cables. BPA look very decent on the pitch, even if off it most neutral Unibond-watchers are rubbing their hands with glee at the cock-up potential of their blundering administration. Prescot have had a tough preseason, and at the moment it's harder to think of a thinner, less competitive starting XI in the section. The widespread 8/13 about BPA is perhaps the way to go is to bag Bet365's HT/FT BPA at 11/8.

Merthyr Tydfil look to be facing a winding up order on the eve of the new season. I doubt if it will have much effect on tomorrow's match but is definitely one to monitor, especially as it may limit their ability to plug gaps in the squad, which is already small and looking light defensively. A shame that Sportingbet have trimmed Brackley from the excellent 7/5 they offered last night, until I posted it here. I doubt that Bwin's 2.45 Brackley is still there - they usually trim the prices when Punter's Lounge comes a-feeding!

I am with you on Brackley at Merthyr Ships and Brackley are my own pick for the title this year. Some outstanding summer signings give them real quality up front and across the midfield and I think Ben Mackey could be a star in front of goal this year. The only doubt for me is over their defence but they should have too much firepower for Merthyr today imo. I also like Evesham at Bedford at a nice price but although I think Bedford are very poor I'm not sure Evesham will be able to score enough this year so will wait and see how they settle into the higher level. Usually Very sound defensively though. I have taken Hemel Hempstead to win at Mangotsfield although this is a bit risky and mostly based on how Hemel played on Tuesday in a county cup game. I thought they might miss Dean Cracknell's creativity and I'm sure they will over the season but Steve Wales and Chris Dillon up front are a handful and they break very well on the counter. I suspect another good season away from Vauxhall Road this year but whether they can mount a serious challenge time will tell. Mangos should surely improve this year and showed signs of better times at the tail end of last year but I fancy Hemel to start well. I'm also on Hitchin to beat Supermarine today as the Canaries are a side that could go well this year and surprise a few people. Most of the squad that finished last season so well remains intact and they have added Derwayne Stupple and Ian Draycott from Bedford so they look to have a more than decent first XI to start the season with. Squad depth will hinder them longer term but with the Barnes boys up front and some quality wide and central midfielders they are too strong for Marine I think. Very accaptable 2.20 available as well.
