Taken 2pts on Hyde at Lancaster, due to ongoing problems at Lancaster. (I took 6/4 but 13/8 is available)

One nice price on Betandwin. Buxton play at Ossett Albion on Wednesday and are a chunky 2.4. Albion are tenth, and going quite well, but got beat heavily at Colwyn Bay on Saturday. Key for me is that they have a big cup match with Scarborough on Saturday, which will be a big distraction. Buxton, with one defeat in 11, are going very well. The experienced Michael Simpkins was added to the squad last week.

(1-10 scale)

It's certainly going to be an interesting match at Lancaster on Tuesday. Despite a summer takeover from apparently loaded businessmen, the Dolly Blues haven't really set a course away from ongoing financial problems going back a couple of years. They lost some good players over the summer, like striker Alex Taylor and keeper Tony McMillan, although they did bring in some quality, with Ryan-Zico Black rejoining and Jamie Tandy signing for a big fee. It was Tandy's return to Droylsden a few weeks ago - news that I posted here - which were the first rumblings of problems. The players went into the league game at Scarborough having not been paid for a number of weeks, which led me to tip against Lancaster on here, though they actually won with relative ease. A replay cup exit to Boro last week didn't help matters, and a number of first-teamers have gone, although there was a bit of talent playing Saturday, with Quayle and Black up front. The powers-that-be are planning to make more signings, so maybe this is an exercise in book-keeping - getting rid of some expensive contracts - but it doesn't leave them in great shape short-term. Hyde, despite the fact that I tipped them Saturday and believe them to be a much better side than their league position, are performing very poorly, but this might be a good game for them to show their class. Not one to go a bundle on, but a decent punt.

The coupon looks very poor value this midweek

I like the look of Lincoln to at least get a point at North Ferriby, 2 teams in questionable inconsistent form meet, but I feel the 5/2 skybet is probably just a little too short

Lincoln have only scored 7 goals this season, but have a defence which means matches at Lincoln must be dour afairs, but away wins already at Leek, Mossley and more importantly Ilkeston got me interested.

North Ferriby have only managed 5 wins in their 11 games, 3 of which were home to Radcliffe (15th), Gateshead (17th) amd Mossley (19th) all teams with internal problems (doesn't every step 3 club hav those mind you)
The odds on a win for the Humberside team are probably more on reputation.

If Lincoln can grab a goal, then recent form would suggest at least a draw.

At that price, mind you, probably only a fun 1/2 point punt

Frickley v Grantham looks very interesting, a bit more research needed, but there is considerable unrest at Grantham.

This culmulated in the Grantham keeper (the only one registered at the club) refusing to play the other day and an outfield player having to take over in goal

Need to look at their website etc in a bit more detail, but could be interesting for a midweek trip.

Lincoln U look a decent shout, MDP. North Ferriby have been a bit under the weather of late, with a few players out and some in the team playing with knocks. Gio Carchedi has been in good form - at times, imperious form - up front for Lincoln, but I'm not sure if he's playing on Tuesday (he missed the Fleetwood trip with injury). They are very solid at the back. (And you have to say Ferriby's in East Yorkshire - not Humberside! The 'H' word isn't very popular on the north bank of the river!)

Frickley/Grantham will be a highly charged affair, with boss Gary Marrow jumping ship to Grantham a fortnight ago, and potentially after Frickley's keeper (and possibly one or two others too). Neither side is in good nick, although I think Grantham were a match for Guiseley for long periods on Saturday. Very hard to call, although the 3/1 about Grantham has its appeal. But I reckon a 2-2 with and nine yellow cards, three reds, at least one scrap involving all the outfield players, and an outraged editorial in the NLP about cleaning up the game!

Skybet's cup and weekend prices out. A point on Tonbridge to see off a poor Cheshunt in the cup at 6/5 for me.

It has been 15 years since Newport County and Bishops Cleeve met in competitive football. Having just reformed from the ex football league team, County plied their trade in the hellenic league and talk at the time was of getting back into league football in another of those "5 year plans" that several times seem to have every 4 years or so!

I wonder what the reaction would have been back then if the county fans knew 15 years later they would still be playing Bishops Cleeve in a competitive match ?.

Newport have moved on significantly since those days, but very, very slowly and it is only in the last 12 months that the foundations seem strong enough for a real challenge to get County back in the Conference, the same level they went bust at all those years ago.

On my travels I have been to many a ground, and Newport County must rank amoungst the worse places to visit. You come out of the ground with a head ache from watching a match so far from the pitch and also from the abuse you are sure to get from the home fans. Its a nasty, uncompromising place and County's rise through the pyramid cannot come quick anough for lower level non league fans.

Bishops Cleeve will not relish this match
Newly promoted to the Southern league Midlands division (level 4) they have made a sound start. 4 Wins and just 3 defeats.
Interestingly enough 3 of the wins have come on the road, at Barton 12th, Willenhall 19th and Rothwell 17th, with a single win against Bedworth (8th) home in Gloucestershire.
When challenged against the bigger fish, each time they have come unstuck loosing against leaders Stourport, Cinderford (5th) and Chasetown 7th. Statiscally BC look to be free scoring, but remove 2 games from those stats and they are struggling to net a goal a game, I can't see them having the necessary fire power in South Wales on Saturday. They will stay up, which will b a great season for them, but will loose consistently to that leading pack.

This is BC's 5th match in this seasons FA CUP, all victories coming against weaker opposition.

A lot has been written on these threads about Newports strength in both a strong defence and in an attack that is starting to gell.

Ten goals in the last 3 games will be most welcome and to have Craig Hughes in his current top form (5 goals in 3) is great news for them.

County's definate strength, as mentioned previously is their home form, very few teams will return from South Wales with a point or more. Basingstoke, Bishops Strortford, Eastleigh, Havant and Hayes have all gone back down the M4 empty handed, with just a defeat by a single goal in 7 to Farnborough there is no real consistent home form to lay on.

I was particualy impressed by the proffessional display Newport put on, when winning 3.0 in North Devon at top Western league side Bideford. They are a good team and to win 3.0 shows a lot of character and drive

It will be a major shock were Bishops Cleeve still to be in the cup on Saturday evening and hence I feel the 1/2 offered by Sky should be taken

Newport County v Bishops Cleeve
1/2 Sky bet
5 points
points ratio 0-10

One more for me tonight...

Gateshead at Whitby Town (13/5 Paddy Power, Skybet 1pt)
I reckon Gateshead's form is showing a blip in the right direction. After a busy summer, team building is continuing on a weekly basis. Michael Oliver is the latest to depart, but in have come the useful Neil Tarrant from Workington and loanee Michael Rae from Hartlepool. The blend changes but they are getting it right: the win against Matlock on Saturday was deserved, as was the league win at Leek. Indeed, they've performed very well away, with draws at Prescot, Kendall and Marine to add to that win. The only defeat was 3-1 at North Ferriby - a match in which they had very little good fortune. With Adam Johnson still injured, the key performer is David Southern, a hat-trick on Saturday and seven for the season, and he's really relishing his role behind the front two. Whitby are on a run of four straight home wins, so are no mugs, but I think they've been less than convincing at times. They have the ability to score but, like Gateshead, concede far too many. In what could well be a shooting match, I reckon the odds about Gateshead are quite decent - a Rae-Tarrant-Southern attacking force looks very decent indeed.

Gary Ingham, Frickley's keeper, has joined Grantham, just to add spice to tonight's match. He won't be involved, however.

Although the teams haven't been announced at Lancaster yet, word I've had (the party line, I hasten to add) is that it's pretty much the same side as Saturday - in other words, a mix of first-teamers and reserves filling the gaps.

Potentially, though, it's a less strong side. Young but capable defender Steve Winne and experienced campaigner David Bayliss, who got knocks on Saturday, are having late fitness tests right now.

It looks a decent opportunity to get some money out of Hyde, who let me down at the weekend, and Lancaster, who let me down when I first posted news of their wage difficulties two weeks back.

Do you get the feling all the bookies are looking out for your postings Ships. I don't know anyone else who finds out such a wide and varied amount of information from up and down the country.

Hyde are now as short as 4/5 on skybet. Crazy

Just want to say that what a phenomenal poster you are shipsupstreets.

I was following you last year and you were nothing short of sensational, and you seem to have picked up from where you left off.

mid devon punter too. Fantastic write ups.

Not sure if you two actually get the recognition you deserve but keep up the good work.

You have a very faithful fan in me.

Looks like Hyde won 3-2, but Gateshead lose 2-1. Still, a couple of points to the profit bag. That's how I like it!

Thanks for the kind comments, Nehemiah! But although at least I'm now in profit it has been a thorny start to the season.

Chalmers - I know of one firm that comes on Punter's Lounge regularly, but the simple fact is that they react to weight of money rather than media reports, website gossip (from the likes of me) and internet rampers. (The compilers are fans too - some of them, like us, are stood under a tin roof on a Saturday wondering why the hell they didn't stay at home and watch the Sky ticker!) You eventually pay for your success as a punter, particularly in niche, low volume, strict limit markets like this. Since Skybet pulled the plug on me last season, it has been harder to operate. To be honest, even to be operating this season at all is a bonus after last season - match betting and ante-post were good for me and I didn't expect to be able to continue. My best hope for keeping going is that more bookies start covering the non-leagues, though the signs haven't been great, given that the admirable people at Bet 365 are retreating from Vase and Cup games and Step 4 ante-posts. It's either that or I'll have to lose spectacularly for a few months!

I had a 7% return last season

however, whilst that looks impressive, I spent so long on analysing matches etc, that I could have earnt more on a checkout at Tesco's !

I too would like to see non league widened to lower levels, in previous years we really did take the layers to the cleaners in the vase and early fa cup in particular

hopefully someone will have the confidence to get back on next year

You certainly get "stranger" odd variations in the non league game and selected matches are great value compared to football league, but teams are more inconsistent at non league as well, particually with the fitness of key players and smaller squads, this is where Shipsupstreet is in a class of his own.

Just scanning the Trophy replays last night and saw: Dulwich 6-7 Tooting & M 7. Tooting & M were 6-5 down, and down to ten men. All in normal time too.

I heard it was 5-5 at FT and went to extra time with Dulwich seemingly playing 3-2-5 after their two centre backs both went off injured and no cover on the bench!

Thanks, Chalmers. I once missed a match at Dulwich because it was raining and I couldn't be bothered to walk a half mile to the ground - finished 6-6!

Buxton, 2.4 shots earlier this week, won 4-1 at Ossett Albion tonight - a match, as I suspected, that featured a home side with one eye on the cup game with Scarborough on Saturday. That pushes my betandwin success rate to over 79 per cent.
