It's very early for Saturday stuff, especially with so few prices out, but I can't resist a cheeky 2pts on Gateshead at Matlock Town on Saturday, a meaty 7/2 with Skybet. It combines two current elements of thinking that have featured on the Punter's Lounge non-league thread in recent weeks: that Gateshead are quite good, and that Matlock are suffering from a lot of football. No matter that Matlock let me down by winning at Prescott at the weekend - they were on the defensive for long spells and it took two late goals to see off Prescott, though there is no doubting Matlock's spirit. Last night, they lost at Fleetwood in the Unibond Cup and tomorrow they play Whitby. They have a small squad, and it is inevitable that a few players will have knocks. I've opposed Matlock for the three of their last four home matches, and made a tidy profit: they drew with Fleetwood, lost to Guiseley (9/4) and lost to Ilkeston (3/1). I didn't dare go against them in the match with Grantham, but that was a lot closer than expected - they squeaked a 3-2 win. There's a case to be made for 3/1 Whitby tomorrow, but it's fair to say Gateshead are better than Whitby. Gateshead, meanwhile, warmed up for the weekend with a Monday night win over Witton - ten unbeaten for them. I expected much better from them this term, and went into the season a little annoyed at having missed out on the big ante-post prices. However, it didn't click under ex-Newcastle Blue Star boss Tony Lee, but things have been going well for caretaker Ian Bogie since he took charge six weeks ago. Striker David Southern is in great form and midfielder Matty Moffat is looking like what he was until Christmas - a decent Conference North player. Indeed, it was the signing of Moffat from Blyth Spartans in the new year that alerted me to the fact that Gateshead mean business: if they can lure such talent they need to taken seriously. They've been on my watch list for next season for a couple of months. The match itself, with more riding on it for Matlock, is going to be tight, with all results possible. In such circumstances, 7/2 looks big.

Pushed for time at the moment, so apologies for lack of depth, but a quick look at skybet shows Banbury, Merthyr and Gloucester all looking big prices. Thanks for the Tivvy background MDP. Sorry about the last gasp winner last night, but it was good for me!! Great result for Chessy against Corby too ![]()

Southern Prem thoughts: Cirencester - BANBURY @ 2.62. Cirens have been awful as been talked about in this forum a number of times recently, so does not need me to repeat it. Barring a mathematical miracle they are relegated. Banbury have been going along nicely with recent wins at Hitchin, Corby and Rugby guiding them to a safe mid table position. But, the warning sign is flashing due to their 0-4 pasting at Wealdstone last time out (suggesting that maybe they are already on the beach enjoying their summer holidays) and Cirens have nothing to lose. This would usually be enough for me to swerve the game but, having given it some thought, I'm on for a point as the price is very generous imo. MERTHYR - Kings Lynn @ 3.50. Linnets haven't won away for 2 months (6 games inc. 4 defeats) and this is just the sort of long away trip that has brought them little success recently (but has been profitable for me!) and I see no reason not to oppose them again here. Safely in the play off places and almost certain of a home semi-final, I would expect them to concentrate on nursing some players back to fitness rather than go all out for a result in Wales. Merthyr are tough to beat at home and are showing some decent end of season form. As long as last night's exertions against Tiverton didn't take too much out of them, I'm happily backing them at a tasty price. Tiverton - GLOUCESTER @ 2.62. Another good price imo. Tiverton have been much talked about on here recently and their schedule (11 games in 21 days) must have knackered them out by now! Put them up against a decent side in Gloucester who are playing well, who play all their best stuff away from home and who have only lost twice on a Saturday all season (and that was to two of the top 6 so no shame there) and I think you have a team over priced. The danger is that there is nothing much on this game for either side but a good price is a good price imo so I'm on.

You'll know from recent postings that I have been quite bullish about Walton & Hersham of late - they have indeed landed for me nicely on a couple of occasions. They lost last night 2-1 at home to Boreham Wood, but that match hinged on a very controversial second goal for Wood. Though they are now relegated, the mood in the camp is pretty good, and I reckon W&H will be out to win this one. I suspect that they'll have too much for a spirited East Thurrock, though I think it's fair to say that ETU are putting in the occasional good performance home and away. They lost 4-5 at Harrow a few weeks back, scoring four own goals in the process - that's not relevant to the punt, I just wanted to mention it. 5/2 at Skybet is too much for me. 1pt. Bet 365 have cut Wealdstone to 4/5, though the price is still available at Skybet.
