will hopefully get some reliable team news prior to the cardiff game - all depends whether cardiff are taking this seriously or not.

would be interesting to hear from any cherries about how your approaching the game too - is it fcuk the cups, let get our 17pts back and try for promtotion via the play offs or is it a case of try and grab the cup money?

Birmingham look likely winners to me. Ali has hit on a important point though. These odds could look silly once the team news is out so im keeping my options open until I know whos playing. If McFadden, Larsson, Bent and Phillips play I can see Brum winning this easily but if the ressies are out that price is not worth touching.

i think a small stakes win for Bury could be value. Bury won most of their pre-season games against teams below them in the football league ladder with Northwich the exception, and also played at home to Sheff Wed, Sheff Utd and Huddersfield. I didn't go to the Sheff Wed game, which according to the local paper was a deserved 2-0 win for Sheff Wed. Since that game i went to the other two games where Bury drew with a very well organised full strength Huddersfield side who should be challenging for promotion and matched them all game, and then outplayed Sheff Utd even though they lost 2-1. Sheff Utd played a strong side with the likes of Billy Sharp, scoring right at the beginning and a late winner at the end, everything in between for 70+ mins was mainly all Bury. If Bury can put in a similar performance of the latter two friendlies and there opening league win against Brentford then i feel they can trouble Burnley. With Burnley being fairly local, there could be a good atmosphere that could help spur Bury on to a surprise win.

I think Swansea could be nailed on against my beloved Brentford, its sounds like they put up a good fight against Charlton on Saturday. Our side like so many in League two is made up of new signings and loanee's who are yet to gel by all accounts.

Gotta fancy Leeds @ best priced 1.65 to win at Chester, apparently Dagenham were not flattered by the 6-0 scoreline in an abject Chester performance on Saturday, whereas Leeds made an excellent start with a win at Scunny. I'm led to believe that Leeds will have their strongest team out(not confirmed).

Have to agree with Leeds, particularly if as someone has said they are putting a full team out. Chester seem to have carried on their poor form from last season with a 6-0 home defeat, and with Leeds starting the season off with a good win, you have to fancy them at 8/13 to do a job on Chester.

Also think Swansea should be too strong for Brentford. Swansea will want to make up for losing in their opening game and get their season up and running. Admittedly 1/2 doesnt represent great value, but i just can't see anything other than a Swansea win.

Lastly, I fancy Brighton at 8/13 to do the business over Barnet at home. Brighton look strong this season in my opinion and got decent win away t Crewe in their first game. Barnet on the other hand after taking a fortunate lead at home to Chesterfield, looked like they got outclassed and ended up getting beat 3-1. I see no reason why Brighton will not win this game.

Of course team news is key in these games, so i would wait to see if they are going to rest players or not before betting. All odds from bet365.

Also, does anyone think Rochdale are value at 17/10 at home to Oldham? Although Oldham won 4-3 against Millwall, they were 3-1 down due to some shoddy defending, and the turning point only came when they were 3-1 down, and a Millwall defender was shown a red card and penalty given for a professional foul. This could be an open game, and if Oldham defend like they did good players like Dagnall and Le Fondre could punish them. Anybody agree?

Chester v Leeds

Chester boss Simon Davies will ring the changes following a humiliating 6-0 defeat to Dagenham & Redbridge.
Striker Ryan Lowe is set to start on the bench with Paul Taylor getting the nod in attack. Paul Butler and Kevin Roberts are likely to be dropped.
Leeds manager Gary McAllister is expected to make a few changes from Saturday's 2-1 win at Scunthorpe.
Paul Telfer, who signed for Leeds on a non-contract basis last week, could play some part.

Chester boss Simon Davies told BBC Radio Merseyside:
"They are favourites to go up in the division above us. So there is not a lot of pressure on us with that.
"The only pressure we've got is what we've put on ourselves, which will be an awful lot.
"We need to go out now and believe in ourselves once more and show everyone, but mostly ourselves, that we can play. But our fans are due something now."

early team news for Barnsley at crewe tomorrow night:

WE WILL TAKE THE CUP VERY SERIOUSLY

Posted on: Mon 11 Aug 2008
REDS boss Simon Davey gave his thoughts ahead of the trip to Crewe.
Simon said: "We have a couple of problems. Mounir (El Haimour) has a calf strain and will not feature. He might be a doubt for the weekend as well. Marciano (Van Homoet) is banned but has a groin strain and would not be available anyway.
"Marciano has been punished with a three game ban and he will lose his place in the team. He was frustrated but that does not condone that tackle.
"We will have two enforced changes for the Crewe game and may swap a striker as well because we have Kayode Odejayi, Miguel Mostto and Maceo Rigters all fighting to get into the side. We have trained today and will have a look before Tuesday night.
"Crewe have a reputation for cup shocks and play very good football. It will be tough but we are confident of getting a result. It is important for us to go and win the game. We will always put out our strongest team in the cup. We will take it very seriously because we need a cup run every year".

my view is that small crowds in large stadiums will affect the home teams as they are not used to the poor atmosphere therefore:

Charlton LAY 1.6

Palace LAY 1.59

Derby LAY 1.59

Leicester LAY 1.73

Watford LAY 1.82

Will carry this on for the wednesday games if successful

ReasoningPalace will not be wanting to show themselves up against League 1 Hereford. As I said at the weekend I have high hopes of this Palace team this year and they can pick up a win tonight in the Carling Cup.

ReasoningLeeds should really win this, Apart from Leeds being the better team, Chester started the season off with a 6-0 defeat at the weekend so they must be feeling low whilst Leeds had a good win away at Scunthorpe.

ReasoningThe best price of the round, Blackpool held there own in the championship last year, Macclesfield are a poor team and will struggle in League two this year. I can't see them getting any result out of Championship side Blackpool, Even money on Blackpool really stood out for me when going through the fixtures.

ReasoningLeague two side Barnet look set to struggle this year, Started the season off with a 3-1 defeat at home to Chesterfield. Brighton look a good bet here, A good victory at Crewe at the weekend and look set for a good season this year. Should progress through to the next round tonight.

Quite like the look of Blackpool myself but will they put out a strong lineup.

Same could be said for a few other sides

Yeah this is the obvious problem.

Ive never seen why Championship sides rest players, Are they to good for this cup or something? I mean it started with the top 4 in the premiership doing it and its slowly got down to the Championship now.

Bit of a joke, Doesn't winning it get you into Europe?

what kind of crowds will these teams be playing in front of? for example, the Leeds-Cha game at cha. after they're 6-0 drubbing i can see the hometown fans thinking its not worth theyre time
