Apparently it is the 'Charles' part of the deal that is the problem and York are looking at restructuring the deal to get Gash

I'm not particularly bullish about Rushden & Diamonds' chances this season, but they have signed some half-decent larkers and they are in much better health than first-day opponents Salisbury City. Salisbury may or may not have a takeover in the offing, but even if they do they won't have the easiest of pre-seasons - the uncertainty means that the better members of the squad are almost certainly looking elsewhere. That's the best case - the worst cases are either starting at -10 or dropping out of the higher reaches of the pyramid altogether. The 4/5 BlueSQ are offering about R&D looks decent.

There's the interesting prospect of the fixture being voided before the season starts if neither club makes it to the starting gate! However, I'm guessing the R&D situation is not too desperate as it seems to be early days in the petitioning process - the thorniest winding up orders are the ones that come after a couple of previous adjournments, so watch out Rushden at Christmas time when all the promises run out.

Vaguely positive noises coming out of Rushden regarding the winding-up order. The least that can be said is that any likely serious consequences are way off. Meanwhile, no news one way or t'other at Salisbury, but players' names are doing the rounds. I'm really not sure what sort of squad they'll be starting the season with. Meanwhile, BlueSQ have trimmed R&D to 4/6 for the opening-day encounter.

Salisbury were planning to play Bournemouth and Farnborough in friendlies next Tuesday with split squads. But in the circumstances, with players likely to be leaving rather than joining, the Farnborough game has been cancelled.

A statement from Rushden & Diamonds says they have - as expected - settled with the taxman. They are now free to fight their way to a fresh winding-up order!

As I pointed out on another thread on here this morning, there are going to be so many financial crises this season that each will have to be judged on its own merits so that its effect on a team's chance can be assessed. The babble on some of the non-league news sites was completely uncritical and sensational, which I suppose is their job, but it doesn't help the punter.

The best price about R&D on the opening Saturday is 8/11 with Skybet, which is still higher than I can make it, though the recommended 4/5 has gone. Who knows, we may well match that over the coming weeks. And there's still the small matter of the crisis at Salisbury to negotiate.

Gary Brabin out at Cambridge United - sacked, according to the club. It won't be for what he did on the field so one can only guess that there was a disgreement over the future direction of the club.

Disagreement over budget, apparently.

BlueSQ have some handicap prices out. I'm not a great fan of these markets antepost, but looking at the potential shape of the season (i.e. guessing), I can foresee a lots of teams bogged down in mid-table. In that situation, those with a settled squad can probably do okay. I suspect Eastbourne Borough at +29 isn't a bad play as I think they can do a few points better than the 60 points of last season - a nice EW play (though I haven't done anything yet). Be interesting to hear Clarky's views on this.

If Histon really have got themselves a budget to fund some signings, then +18 might be of interest, but they have some key men to replace. Closer to the top, York City (+15) and Mansfield Town (+13) will have followers.

All prices are 18/1. Luton Town are the scratch team, with Oxford United at +2, and Stevenage and Cambridge U at +8.

Brabs kept playing Daryl McMahon in our friendlies despite being told by the board that there is no money to sign him. We had him last season and he had one good game before spending the rest of the season benched. We also already have 5 players of a similar / better standard who can play centre mid . Brabin spat the dummy and then refused to speak to our chairmen after giving him the Scouse verbals. The rest is history. We simply cannot over spend on playing staff like we did last season and it appears Brabin wasn't happy with that.

Doesn't bode well for next season as Brabs was very popular amongst the players who are upset that he's left. My biggest fear out of all this is losing Paul Carden who was immense last season.

Cooper from Kettering is favourite with Victor Chandler with Carden just behind. Daish would be a good shout as he is a former fans favourite and is probably desperate to leave Ebbsfleet. If anyone wants a punt on Quinn at 25/1 I'll happily take your money.

Saw a Grays Athletic XI overcome Met Police 4-2 tonight. Given that Grays have only a handful of players signed on for the new season, it was always going to be a patchwork side and they were dismal in the first half, going a goal down and failing to find their three strikers, including Bertie Brayley, with any regularity. Mickey Haswell, who has signed, looked thorughly committed all evening, but for an hour the main interest was seeing Paolo Vernazza having verbals with his own defence. Met Police used the game as a training exercise, throwing in a few trialists of their own, but they did enough to suggest they'll do well in Ryman 1 South. Grays look a work in progress and it's worth keeping an eye on their early-season prices.

Some fans are threatening to return their season tickets if we get Evans. Betting has been suspended after a flurry of bets on Alan Kimble, don't know where they got that from.

BlueSQ have some match betting out for this section. Nothing too much to get excited about, but Mansfield Town over Wrexham at Evs has some interest, as has Crawley Town over Kettering Town at 10/11. My favoured play so far - though I haven't dabbled yet (I'll wait for the other sections) - is Eastbourne Borough over Barrow at 5/6. That looks a reasonably solid play in an acca.

Default Now what for Chester?

Chester facing threat of closure

Chester City face the prospect of not being allowed to start the new season after having their licence application refused by the Football Association. City went into administration in May, following their second demotion from the Football League in nine years.
The Blue Square Premier club were then bought back by their former chairman Stephen Vaughan.
But BBC Sport understands that the FA has concerns over the set-up of Vaughan's new company.
The FA's governance department has been in touch with the club to advise that they they are not currently an affiliated club, which means means they are unable to fulfil their arranged friendlies for this summer.
606: DEBATE
What now for Chester City?

But City managing director Rob Gray said the club are hopeful they can resume with their pre-season plans soon.
"We have to adhere to certain rules and regulations from the FA transferring the membership from the old company to the new company," he told BBC Radio Merseyside.
"That's what we're working on as we speak. Our solicitors are in consultation with the FA to finalise all the relevant paperwork that needs to be processed.
"Obviously that will be reverted and hopefully sooner rather than later we can rearrange our friendlies and carry on with the football we need to play.

"All the relevant paperwork today has been sent across to the rightful people so hopefully by Monday we'll have a clearer picture of how it stands and we'll move forward accordingly."
Chester appointed a new manager Mick Wadsworth earlier this month to replace Mark Wright, who had been working without a contract after returning to the Deva Stadium for a third spell in charge last November.
Wright resigned following City's relegation, frustrated by the hard-up club's lack of funds available to him.
And Wadsworth has already made his first signings, as well as lining up several other transfer targets and sorting out contract issues with the squad he has inherited.

Can't believe that Stephen Vaughan is having trouble with the FA! Such a model owner....

It could just be a shot across the bows but it's certainly a situation to monitor closely. If it is merely a paperwork problem they should be okay, but I feel very sorry for the fans once again, and it's a shame for Mick Wadsworth, who has been working overtime to put together a squad, which was looking to have some promise.

I think the problem is more than just paperwork. If it was simply that I doubt that even the FA would tell them they have been refused membership...simply a quick call asking to sort it out asap. To refuse affiliation, 2 weeks before the season, and on the day of a friendly that had to be cancelled....it could well be very serious.
As a Wrexham fan I hope not.......I wanted to watch their struggle against relegation!

Anyone got any thoughts on Brabin's exit affecting Cambridge United's results in the early part of the season? It's still the same group of players of course (with or without Carden), but it can't be good for preparation or motivation.

Barrow at 5/1 on the opening day might have some value.

Thoughts Belly?
