I'm disappointed Bristol City are so heavily odds-on so early in the season. THere's nothing that really stand sout fo rme except that Swansea are having a tough time of it off the field this summer and should probably be avoided at 1.61, and Leyton Orient may be worth a dabble.

Any tips, anyone?

Scunthorpe look quite big at 6.00 - I'd expect them to be sniffing around the playoffs. With a front duo like Sharp and Keogh there can always be goals.

City should be challenging for automatic - but they've signed quite a lot of players and they might need some time to gel.

In addition - Bradley Orr and Steve Brooker pleaded guilty to affray and are awaiting sentencing - this could mean a possible jail term. Surely, their heads cannot be 100% and I'm sure the opposition would let them know that.

1.57 is quite thin and I think I would lay that.

This is difficult for me,but ........

it has to be done, so, best to get it out of the way quickly.

Have to oppose my team at the weekend, the basic reasons were outlined in a previous article, which can be read here.... http://ubet2win.blogspot.com/2006/07/team-to-avoid.html

Since writing that, Sodje has left for Reading, good luck Sam.

Brentford have made a couple of budget signings, but the squad is threadbare. Of the 21 players registered, 5 are youngsters with exactly 5 league appearances between them. Only five midfielders are on the books, yet we have 8 strikers ! Think you get the idea, players will have to play out of position, it is going to be extremely tough for The Bees this season.

In six pre-season games, all against non league teams, they failed to win in four, drawing 0-0 with Crawley and Bideford, 2-2 with Yeading and losing 3-1 to the Staines Town massive.

They open with a home game against Blackpool on Saturday, who were rumoured to be big spenders this pre season, but that never materialized. However, the stadium has been rebuilt and there will be money for team rebuilding, at some stage. They are a side to keep an eye on in the future.

The Seasiders have been active in the market over the past few days. Having sold Peter Clarke to Southend, they signed Shaun Barker from Rotherham and Ian Evatt from QPR (he will get a good welcome from the Brentford faithful) on extended loan. They also took the young striker Danny Graham from Middlesboro, on a months loan, he played UEFA Cup football last season, all three are expected to start on Saturday.

Put simply, Blackpool are overpriced, do not think any Brentford supporter would be unhappy with a point. In the original article I said that the 3.75 with Corals was big, they have cut it to 3.50, the bigger quote is available with Sporting Odds and BetFred, but seems unlikely to last.

If you can find them +1/2 goal anywhere, it would be a nice bet.

1 point Blackpool 3.75 / 4 points Blackpool +1/4 2.16 betfair.

Pipmel - Good write up. Its the last thing a fan wants to do is knock his own team, before the season has started.

Danny Graham has failed to score at loan at Brighton, Derby and Leeds, so I would not be too concerned. As a Boro fan I don't think he will make it in the upper leagues.

They didn't if they played Port Vale at home last year, although Southend did end up getting promoted.

I don't do this often, and if we're as inconsistent as we were last year this could be the only time this season I will be recommending backing Port Vale.

Evens is a large price on the opening day, and certainly worth a punt.

ReasoningAlthough Cheltenham only got promoted last season i dont think there is much difference in these divisions.

I havent heard many people talking about Swansea for promotion and i feel theya re as strong as any team in theis division. They will miss Trundle, tate,Owain Tudur Jones and darren way for this game. Swansea could give three players debuts, with Kevin Amankwaah, Thomas Butler and Darren Pratley.

Cheltenham havnt really stenghtened from last season and this is dangerous as a few new faces brings freshness to a team. Cheltenham miss a number of players Michael Townsend, Mickey Bell and Damian Spencer all miss out on their League One return with injuries But Steven Gillespie and Brian Wilson should overcome injuries and Michael Wylde (ankle) could be in contention.

Both teams miss quite a few players because of injuries and suspensions but swansea have the stronger squad here. Even wihtout Trundle they have arguably the best striker in the division with Leon Knight and Rory Fallon is proven at this level. Thomas Butler is as good a wide player as there is around the lower leagues and he will provide the amunition for the strikers.

Swansea should have too much for weakened cheltenham.

Just two games to concentrate on for me, both home wins and both with a few goals hopefully!

Tranmere to beat Oldham 2.20 Corals
Over 2.5 goals 2.20 bet365

Tranmere are fancied to improve on their poor performance last season and can open with a win against another decent attcking side in Oldham.
Just expect the home side to come out on top this time.

Crewe to beat Northampton 1.99 Betfair
Over 2.5 goals 1.95 bet365

Crewe dont know any other way to play but go forward, this means they get caught on the break and concede but they never give up and fancy them to be prominent in this division.

2 for me this weekend.

3pts Blackpool +0.25 AH vs Brentford 2.12 Bet365

I think many are overrating Brentford this season. They've lost an awful lot of players pre-season, key players at that. There's no Owusu or Nelson for this match and I think Blackpool can hold them to a draw at least. Simon Grayson has made a few clever signings and with us actually making a profit on a draw here this AH must be played.

4pts Port Vale to beat L.Orient 2.18 Betfair

Last season on the opening day Port Vale went and won at new boys Southend, this time they face another set of new boys but this time at Vale Park. Orient will be up for it but Vale are a good side at home. Martin Foyle has strengthened them and they can see off the London side here.

Northampton should get at least a point at Crewe -IMO!

I've always had a soft spot for Crewe but I think it's going to be another tough year for them this year! Northampton can defend like demons also which means an unders bet for me on them normally!

I'm only hesitant this time because I don't want to contradict BillyHills! Crewe finished pretty well at home last year- but can they really be so well fancied today?

Not betting seriously on the opening day of the season. I will just have a 1pt bet on all the promoted teams. I just need one to come up to make a profit. Promoted teams usually carry their momentum from the previous season into this one.

Can see Millwall beating Yeovil this afternoon.

Yeovil were good at this level last year, but Millwall have proven in the past they are going to be up there at this level and seem to hover between this division and the division above.

Millwall should have too much for Yeovil who have lost a few key players over the summer.
