Interesting how little interest there seems to be in this game. Not sure if its because its "only" the Carling Cup, because its a tricky game to call with the new improved Spurs, or if its because everyone thinks the bookies have calld the odds right. I've not really looked at this game, as so many good other bets this weekend, but here's what Dan Roebuck of The Guardian had to say.....

Quote:

Rested Chelsea can repay punters' faith

Tottenham will push them all the way but Chelsea should be too strong for Juande Ramos's side

Dan Roebuck
Friday February 22, 2008
The Guardian

Chelsea have been the easiest of the "big four" clubs for punters to bet on in the Carling Cup. The decision by Jose Mourinho and subsequently Avram Grant not to play fringe players in the competition, as Arsenal and Manchester United have done, has led bettors to conclude that backing the Blues at ante-post odds of 9-2 is a value play. That was certainly the case for the William Hill customer who staked £20,000 at that price.
Article continues

Mourinho rarely played seriously understrength sides in the competition and was rewarded with his first piece of silverware as Chelsea's manager, even though he was not on the touchline to celebrate the victory after being sent to the stands during the 2005 final against Liverpool. Sky Bet will lay 10-1 that either Grant or Tottenham's Juande Ramos will suffer the same fate this year. The feeling among punters and bookmakers is that Grant has taken few chances in making sure he emulates his predecessor and makes the Carling Cup his first trophy with Chelsea, who are 4-7 (general) favourites to win, with Tottenham 6-4 (Paddy Power). The Blues are 11-10 (general) to win in 90 minutes with Tottenham 11-4 (Bet365) and the draw is at 9-4 (general).
Cheering on Chelsea is usually alien to layers, although one that will be doing so is Betfred, which faces a £500,000 payout should Spurs win on Sunday. Success for Ramos's team has been described by Betfred's spokesman, Dave Metcalf, as the "worst result imaginable for us, as we have laid Spurs heavily at 4-1 to win the competition outright, including one single bet of £50,000 to win £200,000".
Grant has done his best to let those on the Betfred trading floor believe that Chelsea will come to their aid. The Israeli rested a number of key performers in the midweek 0-0 Champions League draw at Olympiakos, while Spurs faced an important Uefa Cup tie at home to Slavia Prague last night. The extra two days to rest and prepare will not have done those at Stamford Bridge any harm.
However, this Spurs side have shown a significant improvement under Ramos, with a 5-1 hammering of Arsenal in the second leg of the semi-final of this competition the pick of an impressive string of performances since their last league defeat, at the hands of Chelsea, in the middle of last month. Defeating a Blues team that have been beaten only twice in Grant's reign might be beyond them, although they are more than capable of taking the game to extra-time. The draw in 90 minutes at 9-4, therefore, looks a fair bet.
As does the 8-11 (Blue Square and Paddy Power) on offer about fewer than three goals being scored in regulation play during the final. Seven of Chelsea's last nine matches have failed to produce more than two goals and Spurs have managed to keep clean sheets in three of their last four Premier League games.
With John Terry hoping to return to the Chelsea starting line-up after missing out on Tuesday in Greece and the arrival of Jonathan Woodgate at White Hart Lane in the January transfer window vastly improving the Tottenham rearguard, defences can be expected to dominate at Wembley. But there is little doubt that they will come under some pressure, which makes members of both teams' back four likely candidates to be the first player to be booked in the match - a market Sky Bet have priced up.
Matches between these two sides are usually fractious affairs - there were six bookings the last time they met in the league - and cup contests can bring the worst out in players at both clubs: 13 cautions were shared in two FA Cup meetings last season. However, the appointment of Mark Halsey, one of the most lenient officials in the top division, tempers enthusiasm for a buy of the bookings with Sporting Index, which quotes 40-44.
Punters could reap rewards by backing Juliano Belletti to receive the first yellow card. The Brazilian regularly has his name taken by referees and is 12-1 (Sky Bet) to be first on Sunday. He has been cautioned in four of his last eight games for Chelsea, including both Carling Cup semi-final legs against Everton, and his 36 bookings in 130 matches in La Liga, for Barcelona and Villarreal, suggest it is not a habit he has picked up since moving to England.

Apparently he has graded the unders bet as a 5 star bet (he ranks his tips out of 5).

ReasoningLeague Cup final and both teams will be determined to win this match. Chelsea have drawn 3 of their last 4 matches, but this includes Champions League and a match against Liverpool. The team has only lost 1 match (away against Arsenal) since September, and seem strong in all competitions. Tottenham have also done well recently, and impressed by trashing Arsenal on their way to the final. Apart from the win against Arsenal, who were missing some players, Spurs can’t seem to beat the stronger teams. Therefore I think Chelsea should be played at these odds, even though it’s a cup final.

I'm betting big on Chelsea to win this final, and its more to do with a gut feeling than anything else.On paper, player verus player Chelsea have it sewn up.Throw in Spurs midweek UEFA result and Chelsea's Champions League result, and it still points to Chelsea. Not the most statistical of posts ever, but I know that,so Chelsea to win it is.

Staked strong 13 points on both teams to score at 1,90, the odds looked very tempting - the same choice today in Roma - Fiore is only priced at 1,75 and lower. Both teams to score in a final is a common thing, on top of that neither team today will calculate, compensate, hide, etc. Fast and skillful forwards in both teams. Chelsea's great advantage is a better GK and defence, but so it was last year with games ending 3-3 and 1-2. Odds on 1x2 are right, the AH line is too low for me as I was thinking of backing Spurs. Will follow the game in-play, as I feel more goals than expected will be scored today. I also think today Berbatov will shine, last time both teams met Chelsea's midfield and defenders zeroed his efforts. Now under Ramos more players take their chances up front and that's all the Bulgarian needs - a bit more space...
Good luck, and better luck to all Spurs fans!

Carling Cup Final
Tottenham v Chelsea ko 15:00
Tottenham needs to break a trend going back almost two decades if it is to wrench the League Cup from Chelsea's grasp when the teams meet in Sunday's final.
The London rivals will be contesting the tournament's first final at Wembley since 2000, with Tottenham counting just two wins in 42 matches against the defending champion Blues in 18 years.
Spurs have beaten Chelsea in a major final before, but that was in the FA Cup 41 years ago
That win over Arsenal was the Spurs' first against their fierce local rival for nine years and suggested that they could edge Chelsea, one of English soccer's most successful sides, to the first trophy of the domestic season.
Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane have scored 36 goals between them for Tottenham this season even after the team struggled early on, with Aaron Lennon, Steed Malbranque and Jermaine Jenas breaking from midfield to support.
The quintet were key to the surprise win over the Gunners and coach Juande Ramos will be relying on them again Sunday.
Bulgaria striker Berbatov cost Tottenham about one third of the 30 million pounds Chelsea paid for former European player of the year Andriy Shevchenko, but his 39 goals in 86 matches over 18 months have led to him being linked with Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
And unlike most Tottenham players, he knows what it is like to score against Chelsea after getting a goal in last season's 3-3 FA Cup draw.
But despite Tottenham's improvement since Ramos replaced Martin Jol in October, Chelsea goes into the match as the firm favorite.
Chelsea is third in the Premier League - eight places and 23 points ahead of Tottenham - and is in contention for four trophies.
Coach Avram Grant has steadied the team since the popular Jose Mourinho left in September and Chelsea could end up retaining the League Cup and FA Cup, as well as winning the Champions League and English title.
While Spurs have mostly languished in mid table in recent years and even flirted with relegation, the purchase of Chelsea by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich five years ago established the west London team as one of the most formidable in Europe.
Chelsea has won two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and two League Cups since Tottenham last lifted a trophy with its third League Cup in 1999.
And Chelsea has another advantage - it has had two more days than Tottenham in which to rest and prepare. Chelsea warmed up with a 0-0 Champions League draw at Olympiakos on Tuesday, two days before the Spurs drew 1-1 with Slavia Prague to advance in the less prestigious UEFA Cup.
Grant has praised his squad for going unbeaten for more than two months despite the absence of players including John Terry, Frank Lampard, Andriy Shevchenko, Didier Drogba, Salomon Kalou, Michael Essien and John Obi Mikel because of injury or attendance at the African Cup of Nations.
Lampard returned to action in the 0-0 Premier League draw with Liverpool two weeks ago and is sure to start at the rebuilt Wembley stadium after resting with just a brief substitute appearance against Olympiakos.

H2H's
12-01-2008 Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham
07-04-2007 Chelsea 1-0 Tottenham
05-11-2006 Tottenham 2-1 Chelsea
11-03-2006 Chelsea 2-1 Tottenham
27-08-2005 Tottenham 0-2 Chelsea
15-01-2005 Tottenham 0-2 Chelsea
19-09-2004 Chelsea 0-0 Tottenham
03-04-2004 Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea
13-09-2003 Chelsea 4-2 Tottenham
01-02-2003 Chelsea 1-1 Tottenham
03-11-2002 Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

2-1 to Chelsea.
Rested key players during the week and should prove too strong for Spurs.

CHELSEA-TOTTENHAM

I feel Chelsea are slightly overpriced here. Sure they have bigger stuff to win this season, with CL and Premiership and even FA Cup still in sight. But this is a final, and I don't think Grant will change from Morinho, he will field the best he has today. No doubt, Spurs have started to breathe new life with Ramos but still will find it difficult against Chelsea here. I would be very suprised if they win this. Though I feel it's gonna be a close game, I feel Chelsea has more quality and are the stronger team mentally as well. They have plenty of options going forward, and are rock solid at the back.

Score prediction: 2-1

Pick 1: Chelsea - 2,15 @ Betsafe (3/10)

ReasoningAlways risky going under 2.5 goals on a Spurs game! But under Ramos they look a slightly more solid unit and basically have an entirely new defence than under the Jol era. King is clearly massive for them and he plays today with Woodgate. Chelsea are obviously a solid side as well all know, and they welcome back John Terry today. I can see this finishing 1-0 to the blues.

Chelsea v Tottenham

Sometimes, just sometimes things happen for a unique symbolic reason. Take Spurs against Aston Villa at White Hart Lane on the 125th anniversary of the club. A game that was built up to be so big and yet half way through the game the only thing that was big was Villa's lead. Still that wasn't game over for Spurs as they kept pushing forward and forward until right at the death Kaboul snatched a late 4-4 equaliser. The team had showed team spirit, grit and determination at a time when maybe it mattered a great deal. Martin Jol was still the manager at that time but now with Ramos in charge better things are expected, better than 2 top 5 finishes and better than never beating these top teams. So far Spurs have beaten Arsenal 5-1. I dont care what is said about reserve players as well Arsenal had a number of players who could be considered first team or at least on the fringe. And lets face it, it was their choice to play these players! Secondly Spurs almost beat Manchester United at home leading 1-0 for the majority of the game and only conceding a very last minute goal from a corner, so again close. Furthermore Spurs had more corners than Chelsea in their meeting in the league last month. In a way the 2-0 scoreline to Chelsea was a bit flattering. Belletti hit a marvellous goal from 40 yards which no keeper could stop and that was it really.

So in short Chelsea are a great team, yes. But do not be suprised if Ramos' cup history, was unbeaten in cups for I think 2 years, before Spurs lost at Old Trafford in the Cup, leads to another victorious day for the mighty Spurs. Ramos will have them prepared and I get the feeling that this game likely means more to Spurs than Chelsea irrespective of the first team approach Chelsea have had through the cup. Lets face it, at this moment in time Spurs have only realistically this route to qualify for the necessity of European football next season. Chelsea on the other hand have a potential FA Cup position, are defo going to finish in the league top 4 and are likely to progress in the Champions League. To Chelsea this game will naturally have lower importance.

So for me Spurs to win in 90 minutes to take value and a nibble at correct scoreline of 3-1 with Keane scoring first. I can see Spurs taking the lead, Chelsea equalising but then Spurs pushing on and winning. I think Jenas will score today too. Yes, I know I'm biased as many people will say but to mark the 125th anniversary of the club, what better party than to be the first League Cup Winners at the new Wembley?

CHELSEA - SPURS

Might be going against the common census here but have a very strong feeling that this will be a very very tight game. both teams have the power to attack and equalise once they go down and will most probably do so. Also being the final, the team that goes up normally tends to sit back and against either of these teams its a bad ploy.

Tottenham as everyone know is in great form. Chelsea look too keen on not losing at home and sometimes play a little too safe for my liking.

DRAW @ 3.5 (6\10 points)

DRAW-DRAW HT|FT @ 5.9 (betfair). (3\10 points)

1-1 correct score FT @ 7.4 (2\10 points)

I have gone for goals over 20pts@2.30 on Betfair.

I know Ramos has tightened things a bit at Spurs but I still think they are a team that will be involved with more goals over games than average. I saw they mid week game and it was pretty open. They could have easily conceeded more than 1 at home to a side they should be keeping clean sheets against. Chelsea have some more attacking talent back now after the ANC. Spurs should score if Berbatov is in form he is a class act even against top defences.

The Carling Cup is usually a bit more open than the FAC final, so I think there will be a 45% of goals over (2.10)

The only thing about that defence the other day is that it will be totally different to the defence which plays today. The other night we had Tainio (a midfielder), Kaboul, Woodgate and Chimbonda (at left back) as our defence. Today we are likely to have Hutton, King, Woodgate and someone as left back. With the only player remaining being Woodgate, who is quality enough to keep well defensively. I think we can still concede goals but no way take the Slavia Prague defensive performance as the norm.

I guess that makes us three , and a good point on the Arsenal reserve players, those reserves killed L'pool last year 6-3, same reserves got away at Blackburn 3-2 in the OT in this Cup (and Blackburn certainly not a nice place to be), being a man down....

ReasoningChelsea are the most boring side to watch IMO, they starve games of entertainment yet fail to win games convincingly. Spurs have the players to open up the game & they will score, however Chelsea have that battling quality to get results. A draw looks the best outcome today.

Will also be looking at backing 1-1 as the correct score.
