I've made up my mind and took:

FC Sevilla @7.00 5/10
Werder Bremen @7.20 5/10
Benfica Lisbon @19.00 10/10
Ajax Amsterdam @24.00 5/10
PSG @75.00 3/10

In my opinion there is no point of backing teams like Tottenham @11.00, Alkmaar @20.00, Newcastle @24.00, CSKA @27.00 or Palermo @32.00 as all of these teams are not capable of sustaining their form for a longer period. The only teams that could spoil my selections are Szachtar Donieck @40.00, Bordeaux @40.00 and Spartak Moscow @50.00 but I am keeping my fingers crossed they won't have a super season this time.

FC Sevilla and Werder are must-be-taken bets as they are in great form and definately reach the high level of UEFA Cup this time. I also took Benfica Lisbon as this team is highly experienced in european cups and if they have a "good day" they could beat any team, anywhere. Ajax and PSG are among my bets because of their rich history in european competitions so maybe their dream about going back to old, great times come true?

Regards,
DJ

1/32 Finals (14-15.02 & 22-23.02) and 1/16 Finals (beginning of March 2007)

Zulte Waregem - Newcastle.....Vs.........Fenerbahce - AZ Alkmaar
CSKA Moskwa - M.Haifa..........Vs.........Livorno - Espanyol
Hapoel Tel Aviv - Rangers........Vs.........Bordeaux - Osasuna
Sporting Braga - AC Parma.......Vs.........Feyenoord - Tottenham
Steaua B. - FC Sevilla...........Vs.........Szachtar - Nancy
Lens - Panathinaikos...............Vs.........Leverkusen - Blackburn
AEK Ateny - PSG...................Vs.........Benfica - Dinamo Bukareszt
Sparta M. - Celta Vigo.............Vs.........Werder - Ajax Amsterdam

Truly speaking, I am bit by bit satified with the draw of next rounds of UEFA Cup. The good thing for my selections is that if PSG and Benfica beat their opponents in 1/32 they will meet with each other in 1/16 which means that I will have at least one team in 1/8. This would be a perfect scenario for me as both PSG @75.00 and Benfica @19.00 are high odds bets. I have also faith in FC Sevilla (last season UEFA Cup winner) which should easily beat Steaua Bukareszt (I saw the face of Steaua's representative during the draw and it was not a reaction of a guy who believes in his team, hehe). After beating Romanians, FC Sevilla will play in 1/16 against Szachatar or Nancy and undoubtedly again become a hot favourites. Finally, the worst draw for my selection which is Werder to face Ajax. Okay, thanks to the fact that they meet each other I will surely have at least one of them in 1/16 but what bothers me is that there will be waiting strong Celta Vigo or Spartak Moskwa for them. All in all, If I will be lucky I will be having 3 teams in 1/8 Finals so I am keeping my fingers crossed from now on.

DJ

ReasoningWerder were somewhat unlucky with their draw in the Champions league as they have been a decent underrated outfit for 2 or 3 seasons now. Currently top of the Bundesliga, full of goals they look the value in a weak looking competition.

Take out the first 3 in the betting and the rest of the field is much of a muchness. 4th favourites are previous winners CSKA Moscow, although having seen them twice vs Arsenal this season, I cannot envisage them being strong enough to take this, without dramatic improvement. in close proximity are the likes of Newcastle, Benfica and AZ Alkmaar, none of whom possess the quality of the Germans.

Seville are decent enough favourites, having a good season in Spain so far but I simply cannot fathom out how Betfred rate Spurs 13/2 chances, ahead of Werder.

agree AK, Bremen are a very good side, doing well in germany and have shown some class in the CL. Beaten Chelsea once and unlucky at Stamford bridge. Also came within a whisker of all 3 pts against Barca at home. Deffo a good shout @ that price IMO

After today's news about Tottenham being awarded a bye into the last 16 of the UEFA Cup following the expulsion of Feyenoord I made up my mind and take:

Tottenham @8.00 7/10

In the next round Tottenham will face Braga or AC Parma and I expect English side to win over one of these opponents.

I'm a Spurs S/T holder so take what I say with a pinch of salt.

From what I've seen the pace of Europe really suits Tottenham, and it really suits Martin Jol as well - they've been like a duck to water so far.

Look to be in the last 8 with very little trouble at all.

Personally, I'll be very interested to see who arrives in this transfer window but that notwithstanding, the most important players for the UEFA Cup have to be Lennon and Berbatov - if they stay fit, anything can happen, imo.

Okay this thread has been a little quite lately so thought I would add my opinions. We ar getting to the nitty gritty part of the comp now and after watching the highlights from the quaters I feel all to play for (except Ossuana/Leverkusen match).

This is not after eventing just letting all know my position I backed Benfica at 16/1 and 12/1 at medium stakes.

I think obviously Ossusuna with go through in there game.

The Spurs/Seville game is on a knife edge but will probably just edge for Spurs.

Werder Bremen should be to strong at home in the second leg to AZ.

And then theres the big one well for me anyway Benfica at home to Espanyol, with two away goals Benfica really are in a strong position I just hope they can do the job.

Semi's would then be:

Osusuna V Spurs
Werder Bremen V Benfica

Expect odds to be like this then:

Werder Bremen: 2/1
Spurs:7/2
Benfica: 5/1
Osusuna: 13/2

Thats my thoughts anyway am in a position to lay but price not short enough at the moment current price 8/1 on Betfair.

Would like to hear your thoughts on this tournament.

Regards Ben

It“s a possible job for Werder Bremen I think. If Klose find the way back on the winning streak and Borowski is back in the Team they“ll have a good chance to win the Cup this year. But it“s long way to go for Bremen and the other teams aren“t bad...
