Curiosity got the better of me and had a look at his bio on Wikipedia , found this -

Stein was badly injured in a car crash in 1975. He nearly died but eventually recovered although some[attribution needed] felt that he was never quite the same man again. For most of season 1975 - 1976 Sean Fallon assumed control as manager. Stein returned to the managership at the start of season 1976 - 1977.
Celtic's fortunes at this point went into decline and Stein was persuaded to stand down to make way for a younger man. In 1978 with Billy McNeill's appointment as manager, Stein was not offered a seat on the Celtic board, but was offered a position with responsibility for the Celtic Pools[4]. Stein rejected this offer as he felt he still had something to offer football and left Celtic in less than amicable circumstances. Shortly afterwards he became manager of Leeds United but, after just 45 days in charge at Elland Road, Stein resigned, accepting the position of Scotland manager.

Surely a man of his stature and standing within the club he had devoted most of his sporting life to should have been given at least a Non- Executive position in the boardroom rather than put in charge of a lottery?? Seems pretty poor to me !!

I believe Jock Stein was a prod (correct me if I am wrong Celtic fans), this could have prevented him from being awarded a non-exec position...? I dunno though?...

No, for real.

Quote:
“25% of our [Celtic’s] managers have been Protestant”
Jock Stein on being appointed manager of Celtic, when pointed out with headlines in the papers and by people that he was the first Protestant manager of Celtic (he was only the 4th in the clubs history (retold by Hugh McIlvaney)

What an interesting thread.

I used to go to Scotland to watch football about 5-6 times per year usually to watch Rangers during the period 1991-1998. I used to really enjoy the hatred filled atmosphere of the old firm games... mainly for the novelty value... obviously being English, it was a hatred that I had never experienced.

I must admit though, I never once felt threatened in the way I did when watching Forest at places like Liverpool, Man Utd, West Ham, Leeds etc or watching England abroad anywhere.

The only bother I got was when Celtic were away and people claiming to be Celtic fans (but obviously not fans enough to follow their team) used to hang around Glasgow train station and try to have a pop when we were waiting for the train back to Largs.

I got bored of it in the end around about the same time I got bored of top flight English football and my subsequent football trips to Scotland would involve watching Greenock Morton......... superb

Questions are part of a debate, that's how knowledge is shared. I never at any stage told you you were wrong to be upset.

Chill a bit eh ?

Right,

I firstly think I made my feelings clear about this matter, you subsequently asked me if there was "any need for six adjectives.?".....I do not think there was any need for that.

Secondly, I do not get so 'upset' about this campaign/chant because of my love for the main himself (as you have clearly pointed out I never experienced first hand any of his work)
I also pointed out even if the songs were against a stranger in the street I would still feel the same disgust and saddness that I do. This is because IMO child abuse is one of the worst crimes anyone can commit, now to accuse someone (who is not alive to defend himself) of such a crime, even though his family and fans have to live in a society where their loved one is constantly accused of this, to me is just sickening.

Rangers "fans" if you can call them that, are committing this horrible act all for a quick, idiotic, cheap dig at Celtic.

I personally do not know how the media and every other decent human being can just sit back and let this carry on, to me its just so immoral!

Watch what you are saying!

Nobody on this forum or anywhere else for that matter, has EVER accused Jock stein of child abuse.

I went to a Celtic Rangers game about 15 years ago and the atmosphere was electric. The religious divide and reference to Northern Ireland politics was massively prevalent. Would it be fair to say that it benifits both clubs even if they don't condone or admit it? I'd say replica shirt sales in Belfast must be nearly on a par with Glasgow.

Are the references to child abuse the thing that Alan Brazil was involved in? (as a witness)

Er, guys. Lets calm things down a bit...

ScottishBhoy. I think TBB is trying to say that no-one here has ever said the Big Jock actually played apart in any 'abuse'. People have simply stated that he may not have done anything to alert the authorities... I have never said , and certainly do not think for one minute that he actually carried out any of the 'abuse'...

Please guys, lets not get OTT here.

Both clubs are trying to stamp out sectarianism - rightly so. It can be argued that Celtic have been more successful in recent years, but rangers are now 'cathing up'. There is not alot you can do to prevent morons singing ridiculous songs, but on the whole, the problem is GRADUALLY being eradicated.

Replica shirt sales in Belfast probably exceed shirt sales in Glasgow in all honesty.

Unfortunate for the Scottish game that both players are foreigners .

Aiden McGeady is more Scottish than me, born and raised in Scotland, with both of his parents also born in Scotland.

Should be a major part of the Scottish team, but instead he turned his back on his country to play for Ireland (he has one irish grandparent). I have zero respect for him, my view is he saw the state of the scottish team under Berti Vogtts and didn't fancy it and thought he'd do better playing for Ireland.

That the Irish team appears to be in freefall whilst Scotland is on the up and up amuses me no end.

Yeah, good strike.

Taking that out of the match then it is sh!te.

Celtic piling on the pressure, Rangers soaking it up.

Gers to go 442 early doors and nick a 1-1 I reckon...

Fair play.

Celtic played the better match, but only just won...

Still, Rangers have the league to lose IMO...
