I think steveadam hits the nail pretty much on the head with this statement:

The problem is NOWHERE near as bad as it was, even when I was at school in Glasgow 8 years ago. In the last year, I have myself witnessed individuals being ejected and subsequently banned from Ibrox for sectarianism. This was unheard of even 5 years ago, when songs like The Sash, No 1 Platoon etc were regularly heard. I can only talk for Rangers, but I know for a fact that they are addressing the problem. They, however, will NEVER be able to eradicate it - simple as that.

Why? Well, the entire reason that there is a sectarianism problem in the West of Scotland is because of the school system. At 4 years of age, a Catholic child will be enrolled in a Catholic primary school - and vice versa. These children will not properly 'mix' with people of their own age, of different religions until they have left school. Deny it if you wish, but that is a fact.

Personally, I am obviously a Rangers fan, and a protestant. However, if anyone even suggested to me that I was a bigot I would knock them out. I will not go into the reasons why this would happen, but lets just say I have directly seen the hurt that sectarian thugs can cause...

Please, and I will keep repeating myself till I am blue in the face (no pun intended), lets not open up the religion debate here...

I'v not been on the board for a few days now and I when I came back on and read through these posts I could'nt help but laugh at how this thread has evolved.

Alex, I used to think you were a decent punter whom would not get involved in anything to upset other punters...I was wrong!

Fair enough you didnt like being called a hun, however believe it or not there were actually some Celtic fans on that thread whom tried to calm the situation down and actually asked others to not use this word in future for your own sake (MartyMcG mainly) You obviously never appreciated this effort. As you think he 'does your head in' well let me tell you something, IMO you the one thats tried to keep this going.....always trying to get the last feckin word in as in "at last!!!!" why not just not reply...?

And I am led to believe you made some kind of sick, obscene, ignorant, appauling, detestable, repulsive comment about Jock Stein, well I can only say that comments like these are really only made by people at the lowest end of the intelligence chart, also only made by the real low life of society, so I really hope your feeling like that at the moment! I am pretty sure if some Celtic fan made such a comment as sickening as that against Rangers you would have them banned, double standerds me thinks!

And just aswell you have retracted it as I for one would not let scummy comments like that exist.

Also, it seems that you have made alot of comments on here then when something has been said about them, you have passed them off as a joke, why not be a man and either only post things you really mean, or stand by your comments!

I can't believe this. Look, you have no idea about this. Yup, the whole 'debate' has been blown out of all proportion, I agree. But, you do not know what has been said/discussed via PMs etc. Myself and Marty have been discussing all numbers of things via PM, and am sure that if you asked him he would back me up and prove that I am not:

As you put it.

Yeah, I got offended by a comment, as did some other members. Yeah, I posted something I should not have done, and I retracted and apologised for it. You do not know know me, as you have not been around here for very long, but if you had seen the abuse/stick I (and others) have taken over the years then you should be able to forgive and forget one throwaway comment I made which was swiftly removed.

Believe it or not, I do not care for the Old Firm argument very much. It is boring. I support a football team, and do not support them for religious reasons, and I do not hold anything against people who support different teams or hold different religious views. I am more than able to congratulate Celtic with good results etc, and I have openly done so on a number of occasions in the past.

Well where I'm from and the society I have been brought up in, people whom make jokes and comments about child abuse and even more so to accuse a footballing legend who is not here to defend himself (not that he would have to) are pretty much the lowest of the low, fair enough it may have been a 'joke' in your eyes however you still had the idiocy and ignorance to post it on a public message board.

If however as you say it was a mistake, I have seen other members of this forum banned for less and not had the chance to retract their statements that were made in the heat of the moment, so yet again I see double standerds.

However this is the end of it IMO as I have better things to do than to discuss the rights and wrongs of goods morals within our society.

Really ? and I'm not ripping the piss. I notice you are 21 years old, jock Stein died in 1985, 2 years before you were born.

I remember the night he died very well, I was in 3rd year at school, was watching the match with some mates, it was dreadful.

But given you never saw his teams play and have no experiance of the man, why does the comment upset you so much ??

Well done to:

Walter Smith - Manager of the Year
Carlos Cuellar - Player of the Year
Aiden McGeady - Young Player of the Year

Awards presented last night. I don't think anyone can argue with any of them tbh...?

Also, Willo Flood picked up goal of the year, check it out, it is a total peach of a goal:

Hold a second, who are you to tell me how upset I should or should not be over such a disgusting campaign?

Not that I have to justify my feelings to you nor anyone else for that matter, the comment upsets me so much because the man is not here to defend himself, yet his family still have to live in this sickening society and listen to songs and hear total bullshit about the man they loved.

Jock Stein was not only a Celtic legend, he was Scotland legend in my eyes also (my father and other family members were alive when he was around believe it or not and they can talk) however even if he was a stranger in the street, I would still be upset by this as it is the lowest of all insults and these people are basically dragging this mans name through the mud all for a quick dig at Celtic.

So dont you dare come on here and question why am I so upset about such a comment, IMO anyone who is not upset about such remarks are just as bad as the idiots who sing the songs.

End of!

Agree cant really complain, however I personally thought your playboy of a goalkeeper deserved something, he has been on top form not only domestically but also in Europe.

Yeah, Alan McShagger has had a decent season. Probably the fact that he is constantly in the papers for sporting and non sporting reasons counted against him... A bit worried that both him and Cuellar will be off down south in the summer mind...

Firstly, I didn't tell you how upset you should or shoudln't be. Read my post. I was simply courious why.

"dare to question why your upset", oh come on, it's an internet forum we have conversations. Isn't that kinda the point of it ? One person says something, another replies, people ask questions

Questions are part of a debate, that's how knowledge is shared. I never at any stage told you you were wrong to be upset.

Chill a bit eh ?

I remember the day Jock Stein died too, a terrible refereeing performance that killed Wales' hopes of qualifying for the World Cup in 86. Davie Cooper RIP put away the penalty that poured misery on me from an early age and it still hasn't stopped.

I think AJ's points are valid tbh, asking why you feel such love a man that you never saw his team play. Sure I was never around when Shanks was dominanting but I was when Bob Paisley was around, his death was a huge loss.

Quote taken from the article attribted to Jock Stein:

"This terrible tragedy must help to curb the bigotry and bitterness of Old Firm matches. When human life is at stake this kind of hatred seems sordid and little. Fans of both sides will never forget this disaster."
(Jock Stein from the Celtic View on the Ibrox Disaster of 1971)

Has anything changed since that day?

I'll go slightly off topic here, it was a stone wall penalty and we deserved to win.

The man was certainly a 'legend' but i read somwhere [ newspaper serialisation i think ] that he and his family considered that he was treated very shabbily by the CELTIC hierachy at the end of his career with the club ??
