| Walter Smith will be confirmed as the new manager of Scotland on Thursday, BBC Scotland understands. The 56-year-old was interviewed on 19 November and made demands about the structure of the job within the SFA. The details of those demands have been thrashed out over the last week and his appointment will be confirmed after the SFA board meeting on Thursday. Poor bugger........ Fighting a losing battle in my opinion, quite like the guy although Everton supporters will probably disagree with me. Quote:
C,mon our friends from North of the border, give us your opinions. Whats the problem areas in Scottish footie ? A nation that has produced such players as Kenny Daglish,Gordon Strachan,Denis Law.......Henrik Larrson.....etc...... What do you mean Larsson is Swedish. Would it help if Rangers and Celtic buggered off to England ? Less imports, more emphasis on home grown players ? Come on im not taking the p*ss im genuinley interested. | |

| I tired getting a bit of discussion going on the Scottish team too Winrew to no avail. I had written a lengthy post too concerning the lack of facilites etc but deleted it all as it seemed pointless at the time. Perhaps it's just too depressing for folk to talk about. ![]() I'll probably come back later and have another go though. ![]() It is depressing mind. ![]() |

| Nooooo to Celtic and Rangers joining the Prem Definately a case for Celtic and Rangers to use more home grown talent though, surely the Johnny Foriegners are damaging all the young Scottish prospects from developing to a better level. I believe this could be as much as half of the problem and would like to see the Clubs and the S.F.A agree to a limit on imported players (though i very much doubt they will), maybe only allowing them to make up 15-20% of the squad. I think football could be placed on a higher priority in schools possibly? More money spent on sporting facilities too. What incentive is there to be a footballer in Scotland these days too, there is only half a dozen clubs who can pay a decent wage. When Celtic were the first British club to win the European cup the team that played for them that night were all born within a 32 mile radius of the club (i'm pretty sure i read this as fact), as a kid i also remember a very good Dundee utd team playing well and beating good teams in europe with a good blend of home grown and imported players, Aberdeen beating R.Madrid in the cup winners cup final ffs, i'm sure good things can happen for Scottish teams in europe again but the starting point has to be cutting down on imports. Well thats what i think anyway ![]() |

| Countries like Norway put Scotland to shame. Apparently they have fantastic indoor facilities, something we lack which is amazing really when you consider our climate. Didn't Norway's fortunes change when they were threatened with having the football team scrapped completely after years of embarrassing results? Seemed to work a treat. Those darned Scandinavians seem so much more focused than us though. Maybe it's a cultural issue. We're doomed if it is. ![]() I think there could also be a case for saying Scotland has way too many club sides for the size of population. In fact, it's an open and shut case. We DO have too many club sides. I remember reading someone's view that a lot of promising, youngsters were suffering due to poor coaching and facilities at lower league sides. That was something I had often thought about myself but I can't really see a way out of it. Anyone got any ideas? I'll think some more on it. It's all going to come down to money isn't it? ![]() |

| I agree Punter about the imported players. Club managers are always going on about the fact that they have to do what's best for their team and will often fall into the trap of looking for the quick fix. Man utd have actually done quite a bit promoting the case for rearing your own. Jim McClean, the Dundee Utd manager during all their succesful times, has moaned and moaned and moaned in recent years about the lack of work young players are willing to put in now. I believe that's also part of the problem. It's all too ****ing easy for them and they don't give a **** about bettering themselves or trying to reach the very top. They should be out there every day perfecting their skills........ but what about winter months....... bah! Another case for indoor facilities. ![]() It really will all come down to money won't it? ![]() |

| A brave decision to make the manager of Scotland ......er......Scottish. Unlike some countrys that favour a foreign guy..... I really hope Walter does a good job for Scotland Read alot of comments from past Scottish players and no one has a bad word to say about him. Quote:

| we're doomed. all the home nations. we live in the past and live off past glories. whether its '66 or Archie Gemmel's goal... always harping back to king kenny or gazza. Like Hereford perenially celebrating Ronnie Radford's goal against Newcastle in the cup, were doomed..... Walter Smith will do an average job and leave after a few years. At least he might get the players playing with passion and fire in their bellies like - that alone might be worth 5/10% more performance wise. Celtic and Rangers cant abandon the foreign legion and take players from the Home Nations. There arent enough good scots to make up the 2 teams (world class players like) and neither team can afford to gamble and plough money into an academy that might produce them. Clubs these says are in so much debt that they have to take the easy fix and go for the short term solution - to the detriment of the national teams. Academies dont really 'work' anyway. How many quality players have Man U produced in the last 10 years? Since the class of '92 (neville, savage, butt) How many household names have come from their academy? I cant think fo any really. They arent guaranteed and thats the 1 thing clubs need. Security. Rangers and Celtic need to be assured of European football each year or I guess theyd go bust... |
