Boys and Girls.... tut tut!

Let us remember that both Rangers and Celtic are football teams. Therefore this thread should be used to discuss football and nothing else.

Too many people use Rangers and Celtic as an excuse to air their religious beliefs. Time to move on, we're not in the dark ages now, football has moved on... so should you!

How can you remove the sectarian hatred that exists between Rangers and Celtic? It was going on long before either club existed and without doubt still exists today. In an Old Firm thread you are dicing with it and you are going to get diehards from each side mingling, and deep down they hate each other.

A lot of the players than play for the clubs today will not understand it, Gazza made an effort when trying to play the flute, the wrong way, in front of the Celtic fans. He thought it was banter, its not, theres pure hatred between large parts of both sets of fans. I find it hard to see how there can be banter between the two teams, there are many that can have a laugh between each other, theres a hell of a lot that don't, and theres plenty that just want to kill each other even now.

You can't take that element away from either club, and they merely say its just banter now. Its about as far from it as it ever was.

A lot of what you say makes sense. Your always going to get die hard fans as Rangers have found out after a few recent run-ins with UEFA regarding songs been sung.

What annoys me is the younger generations who just follow like 'sheep', making remarks and singing songs and are totally ignorant to the meaning... They just follow the crowd and sing and make remarks because 'that's what you're suppose to do' as either a Rangers or Celtic fan - crazy!

How can you just wipe out a hatred that has gone on for hundreds of years though? Sure the troubles in NI are over, but that hatred will take decades if not more to go, if it ever will. It will carry on within Rangers and Celtic for my lifetime I am sure, regardless of how much Rangers and Celtic want rid of it. Its in the clubs roots. They will always hate each other without doubt.

What a game that was. Thought after they had lost the lead for the 3rd time it really was over. But they did it, they should feel very proud.

Only other team laughing will be Rangers though. All set up nicely for them now.

Fair play to Rangers in this season. I think they have been amazingly lucky at times though. For all the mircales Walter Smith has seemingly worked, I'd still far rather he was Everton boss rather than David Moyes. Moyes may not yet have won a sodding thing, but I fear him more. The man has worked miracles at Everton.

Hang on a sec... I don't like the way this is heading. Religion has NOT been bought into this thread, and nor will it.

Get in the Queen of the South... Great day for them and their fans.

There is no 'hatred' between the clubs, only between some very niave fans. Both Rangers and Celtic are working towards ridding the game of these idiots, and those who constantly sing sectarian songs (some of whom have managed to find their way to these forums).

Being a Rangers fan, I don't particularly like Celtic, however, I certainly don't hate them - indeed I found myself cheering them on against Mourinho's divers in the UEFA final - and I am sure there will be plently of Celtic fans who will be hoping Rangers doing well. We have already raised Scotlands European coefficient enough to get a team straight into the group stages in 2009 - therefore indirectly helping Celtic.

Healthy rivalry is a very good thing to have - and you can't beat the passion and dedication of the Old Firm fans. Maybe with the the stance of UEFA and both the clubs the next generation of fans will show everyone that supporting one of the old firm does not involve so called 'hatred'. Anyone who does think so is without doubt the lowest of the low.

Steve.

You can't be that naive surely? There may be a handful of Celtic fans hoping Rangers win UEFA Cup, but thats were it will stop, merely a handful. Majority of Cletic fans will be hoping they fail, would be crazy to think otherwise tbh.

The passion in an Old Firm comes from the hatred between the fans. Both sets of fans have hated each other since the outset. Hopw else can you descirbe it? I was nearly hammered in a catholic village for wearing a Rangers shirt the day they won the title at Celtic Park with Neil McCanns wonders. And make no mistake the reverse would have been true as well.

The generation after the next might start to calm down, but this generation is as deep as the last. Rangers and Celtic whether they like it or not have huge sectarian links and a huge following that are bigots...you can't hide something that has gone on for so long really.

I take it you are taking the piss AJ.

After some old firm games there has been riots in parts of Belfast because one or other had been beaten.

Yes... of course it goes deeper than football.

Yes... its wrong

BUT IT IS A FACT.

Oh dear. Looks like we are heading for down the religious route.

I'll throw in my tuppence worth...

I think steveadam hits the nail pretty much on the head with this statement:

Quote:

The problem is NOWHERE near as bad as it was, even when I was at school in Glasgow 8 years ago. In the last year, I have myself witnessed individuals being ejected and subsequently banned from Ibrox for sectarianism. This was unheard of even 5 years ago, when songs like The Sash, No 1 Platoon etc were regularly heard. I can only talk for Rangers, but I know for a fact that they are addressing the problem. They, however, will NEVER be able to eradicate it - simple as that.

Why? Well, the entire reason that there is a sectarianism problem in the West of Scotland is because of the school system. At 4 years of age, a Catholic child will be enrolled in a Catholic primary school - and vice versa. These children will not properly 'mix' with people of their own age, of different religions until they have left school. Deny it if you wish, but that is a fact.

Personally, I am obviously a Rangers fan, and a protestant. However, if anyone even suggested to me that I was a bigot I would knock them out. I will not go into the reasons why this would happen, but lets just say I have directly seen the hurt that sectarian thugs can cause...

Please, and I will keep repeating myself till I am blue in the face (no pun intended), lets not open up the religion debate here...

Yep exactly. I lived in Glasgow for 8 years - from the age of 18 up - going to football games and experiencing Old Firm games first hand. The chanting used to be much worse than it is now - but it is so engrained in some fans they will never change.

I remember being at a Scotland game at Celtic park - against Czech Rep - some of you might remember Gary McAllister being booed off - well during the game a portion of the ground started chanting 'Stand up if you hate Rangers' - at a fcuking Scotland game!! I have no doubt same thing would have happened at Ibrox too. But I vowed never to go and watch a Scotland game anywhere other than Hampden after that - there is no place at a national game for that sort of thing.

I really do not think for a second that the so called hatred is a personal thing, indeed some of my best mates are Celtic fans, however, there is a lingering untertone of religious hate that goes back so long that the uneducated 'fans' think that is how they are meant to act. The sooner they are out of the Scottish game the better.

Steve.

How the fcuk can you have an old firm thread without religion being at least mentioned? Without religion neither club would exist really, they certainly wouldn't be the sides they are today without it.

Like it or not, its a part of the club.

Mate, I ken that it is part of the clubs. But I just don't think it is the sort of thing we want to be getting involved in here...
