Default Martin Jol

for spurs to think about sacking their best manager in 20 years after giving him 40m to spend after only three game of the season, strikes me as utter madness and empitimises all thats wrong with the modern game.

For me, Jol is amongst the top 4 managers in the league, alongside, Sir Alex / Jose / Wegner

From the BBC

Quote:

Spurs chiefs 'lose faith in Jol'

Spurs boss Jol spent £40m on players during the summer

Tottenham boss Martin Jol's job remains under threat because he has lost the confidence of several top officials at the club, BBC Sport understands.
Sevilla coach Juande Ramos is in line to replace Jol, although the Spaniard's agent has denied links with Spurs.
BBC Radio 5live football correspondent Jonathan Legard says some officials are not sure Jol can deliver regular top-four Premier League finishes.
Spurs lost their first two matches this season but beat Derby 4-0 on Saturday.
On Monday, Ramos' agent Alvaro Torres denied there had been any talks with Tottenham, despite Spanish press reports claiming that the 52-year-old coach met with Spurs officials at the weekend.

Both clubs said Ramos' appearance at a Spanish hotel was a private matter and Torres said the meeting was with a friend and had "nothing to do with football".

Jol came under pressure after the two losses - to Sunderland and Everton - in the first four days of the season following a £40m summer outlay on players.

One bookmaker suspended betting on Jol's departure on Friday but Spurs have insisted they are not negotiating for a new manager.
Some fans also believe it is too soon to make a decision on Jol's future after only three Premier League matches.
Daniel Wynne of the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust confirmed: "It's far too early to see how the season will go. "Jol has taken us to fifth twice, which is better than any other manager, and has been backed in the summer with his signings." Ramos has a contract with Sevilla until 2008 and was linked with the vacant post at Manchester City before Sven-Goran Eriksson was appointed at Eastlands.

Im not sure what he's achieved to deserve a "top 4" accolade, very generous. I agree that talk of sacking him seems crazy after the spending spree they allowed him to go on.

Considering the showers of shite that Spurs have had to put up with for the 10-12 years previous to Jol I think the board should count themselves lucky to have him.

It's an absolute fcking disgrace and in all honesty if Jol goes I'll lose all faith of the owners of Tottenham and find it hard to support Levy and go.

This fella has been our most consistant manager in 20 years. Hasn't Levy learnt the lessons of sacking Hoddle and then having fcking Pleat has caretaker manager for 9 months? Everyone knows stability is the key.

The bloke has allegedly been given 6 games and after 2 defeats, directors are eyeing up other managers? He's had 75% of his defence out injured FFS. Utter cnuts that Paul Kelmsey bloke, he's been feeding bullshit for while to the likes of Harry Redknapp, Jamie R and Tim Sherwood.

I'm fuming

One thing, Jol doesn't buy the players. He has an input along with John Alexander, Commoli and Levy.

Cnuts the lot of them

It is an utter shambles to be honest. If the board were that unhappy with Jol then why give hive so much money in the summer? It is very similar to the Hoddle situation a few years back although I do believe that he was not the right man in that case. If it was say Christmas and the team were in the bottom half then I could understand it a bit more but not at this time. Jol has spent a lot of money during his time or had it spent for him as becoming more apparent and has had a developing squad but fifth two years on the trot is a fair achievement and deserves better respect than what he is getting at the moment. As for this sporting director rubbish, just get rid of it. It provides more problems than solutions.
And if he was to go as looking likely now than why Ramos? He has no Premiership experience and despite his achievements in Spain has that to overcome and quickly if this board are anything to go by. I would prefer someone like Hughes. A disciplined manager who would toughen the team up a bit and probably does not get the credit he deserves at Blackburn for their attacking football as they are not just a physical team as some ignorant mangers or one ignorant manager suggests. Also he understands the English game a bit more.
As for Jol, whilst i would not say he is a brilliant manager as he can make some basic tactical mistakes that have cost us in the past, he has done well enough with us to earn more than what he is getting at the moment. Unfortuantely he looks out but you can never say never to him coming back with different owners.

Agreed with what you say Woody. I backed them with what happened with Hoddle but this is a disgrace

totally agreed

Ive never really thought he looked like he knew what he was doing. He has bought 4 great strikers, but they all look like they want to play in midfield. Has Jol really achieved anything at spurs, hes got a great set of players there, and has come close to breaking into the top 4 once. Surely that is his main aim, and he hasnt achieved it yet, doubt he will this year either.

Thinking about replacing Jol is a joke, how long did it take Fergie to build his team?? This is the best squad of players Spurs have had in long many a day, Jol must be given a chance, Look at Utd's start to the season and the money they spent, Does Alex have to go ?? Get real and give the man the season he needs to prove the quality manager most believe him to be!!

I don't agree with it. Jol has done well for Spurs. Realistically, 5th is the best they could have done, although with the money spent this summer I would think they could give Arsenal a fair run for their money.

But.

Similar story with Ranieri/Chelsea. A lot of fans were unhappy with the way he was treated. In comes Mourinho - I believe he too, was untested at Premiership level. Claudio was quickly forgotten after that.

Ramos has a similar pedigree to that of Mourinho, bringing European trophies to an unfancied club. Don't think he would do any worse than Jol.

The timing is strange, if they were going to do it, they might as well have done it in the summer, and backed him with the cash.

Aye, it is crazy but when the men in suits see the table they don't think of anything else.

Top 4 managers for me are Alex, Jose, Arsene and David Moyes who has won manager of the yr a couple of times and guided Everton to a champions league place over Liverpool as well as just being consistently good. Also have big Sam up there - just look at Bolton now without him.

Jols been great for them but if that guy from Sevilla is available then they have a tough choice to make as he is probably the best young manager in the world at the minute.....The job he has done at Sevilla is nothing short of utterly amazing.....

It would be harsh on Jol, but you stil dont keep someone in a job if there is someone else better who can come in.

What is his record before Sevilla? I may be mistaken but was he not at a lot of clubs before getting the Sevilla job?

Quite a few 2nd division jobs all the way, no one trusted him with a top flight job til he did a good one with Malaga a few years back.

The job he has done at Sevilla is incredible, two UEFA cups and took them to the champions league now in the most competetive league in europe, its like a manager here taking Birmingham City to the same targets.

Not too mention his transfer dealing, Renato(5mil), Daniel Alves (2.5mill!), Adriano (1mil), Kerzakov(3mil), Luis Fabiano(unc) Kanoute (6mil),
a

Thats the cornerstone of a champions league side and they cost about the same as Darren Bent

The Club is aware that there has been much speculation over the past few days in respect of our Manager, Martin Jol. As you know, the Club does not respond to speculation, but we do feel in this instance it is important to clarify the current position. Manager Martin Jol and Assistant Manager, Chris Hughton met with the Chairman, Sporting Director Damien Comolli and members of the Board today – discussions were held re-confirming our aims for the season, the development of the full potential of the squad and taking the Club forward.
“We have had two good, progressive seasons with fifth place finishes. I am an ambitious Chairman, we are an ambitious Club and we want Champions League football at White Hart Lane,” commented Chairman, Daniel Levy. “We, the Board, owe it to the Club and the supporters to constantly assess our position and performance and to ensure that we have the ability to operate and compete at that level. We have made a massive investment in the squad and as a result we have the best squad of players this Club has had for over 20 years and they are equally hungry for success and silverware. For that we need our management and coaching standards to be of the highest quality such that players can fulfil their potential and we can compete with the best. We have discussed all of these expectations with Martin and he has confirmed to me today that he feels he is equipped with a squad and a determination to take on that challenge.”

Martin added: “We had a full and frank conversation and I fully understand the ambitions of the Club – they are the same as those of the supporters. He has put a lot of hard work into this Club and with the squad of players we have assembled, it is realistic that we should look to challenge for a top four position and I have assured him and the Board that that is what I shall aim for.

“The last two seasons we have finished fifth and this season we start with an even better team. So we should be optimistic. Yes, it is pressure to deliver, but that is what we managers should expect. Hopefully all the media will relax now - all I shall be concentrating on is each and every game.”

Looks like in no uncertain terms the pressure on Jol is to deliver. Lets hope the players back him.

I LOVE MARTIN JOL
