| AFC Liverpool 5 Darwen 0 Published on August 9, 2008 AFC Liverpool kicked off the league season in style with a 5-0 victory over Lancashire opponents Darwen FC. In an historic day for our new club, the weather was the only disappointment in a thrilling win. Martin Smeaton opened the scoring for the Reds on 20 minutes after some clever interplay. Darwen also put it into the net but the goal was disallowed for a foul on keeper Paul Willis. It was 1-0 at the break, but in true Liverpool style, the reds turned it on when kicking towards the Kop end. Two minutes into the second half Thurston was brought down by the Darwen keeper inside the area. Thurston took the penalty himself and converted comfortably. Shortly afterwards he was on the scoresheet once again to make it three. The reds had scores of chances. Kevin Poole came close, and Thurston almost bagged a hattrick with a fantastic glancing header that only just crept wide. It was Wignall who put AFC Liverpool 4-0 up, before substitute James Croxton bagged the fifth. Team Lineup: 1 Paul Willis 2 Andy Barlow 3 Martin Crowder 4 Mark Bloxham 5 Jay Chandler 6 James Dever (c) 7 Ryan Wignall 8 Ian Johnson 9 Martin Smeaton 10 Dean Thurston 11 Andy McCoy 12 Craig Cushion GK Terry McCormick 14 James Croxton 15 Kevin Poole 16 Ian Sheridan |

| Standard Liege v Liverpool Liverpool very lucky to be level at halftime....Methinks you may see Mr Gerard in the 2nd half.

| Feel sorry for the Belgians, they should have won that by 3 or 4 in all honesty... ![]() Liverpool were horrendous tonight. I still cannot justify 20 million for Robbie Keane. ![]() |

For whatever reason we have tended to struggle a bit in the 3rd round qualifiers under Rafa. We seemed stuck in pre season mode tonight and really no outfield player had a good game for us. We could have done with Ryan Babel being there rather than in Beijing. | |

| Never saw the game, sounds like it was a lucky escape. Worrying though. Belgian football isnt exactle the strongest in Europe.

| treated it like a friendly game, cant single out individuals, they all looked a yard short apart from Pepe. ![]() expect a reaction at Sunderland, why Mascherano was allowed to go to the Olympics baffles me? We could have done with him last night to harrass Liege in midfield. |

| We can agree to disagree. They hit the post had missed the penalty that never was in the first 15 mins. Reina made about 2 big saves in the rest of the game. I don't doubt we were lucky not to lose, but regardless of how bad we were the margin was never 3-4 goals. |

| A good result for us at Sunderland today, but again the performance wasn't great. First half we looked very unfit and well off the pace at times. The second half introduction of Alonso for Plesis helped us a hell of a lot. Torres did nothing all game but popped up late on to score the winner. Job done really. |

| Great result in the end considering, however Torres ain't going to be able to bail us out all the time. Atmosphere outside the team is ominous and I think there will be a departure sooner rather than later! If only it could be the owners , however I think it more likely to be Rafa having enough of being undermined or Parry. The relationship between Rafa and Parry seems to becoming untenable. The owners have constantly aired their grievances for all and sundry to hear and this is just not the Liverpool way! We require stability and humility from the owners not an asset they plainly have in their locker! Our perfomances on the pitch will continue to be affected by the feuding and our finances will become more and more depleted without the success we crave. Time for the owners and for that matter Parry to move on and allow an owner to come in with one mindset and that is to fund Rafa and get the ground started. Success will follow because at the moment we are a journalists dream.

| The Torres goal reminded me of the old times at Anfield when the Marvellous Billy Liddell would do hardly anything for 80 or so mins, and then pop one in, just as Torres did last night. Just an old man's memory surfacing. |
