Barry £18 million now or so we are being told by newspapers

27 years old is he really worth that much? if it is that amount???

Liverpool coming knocking on the door and it's raise the price time!
Until these Yanks go we can't afford to pay stupid prices. I hope they make a stance on these inflated transfer prices and say we'll pay the going rate which was originally £12 m for Barry! maybe put some sort of incentive on top for appearances but that is all.
I can't see Villa being a club who'll dig their heels in for a player who has given them 10 years great service and has asked them to honour his wish of coming to Liverpool to play champions league football !

We'll be hearing Newcastle want £10 million for Milner next

And you wonder why Wenger doesn't waste money on English players

It's getting beyound a joke but if certain clubs wish to pay these overatted prices can't blame the seller

I've been impressed with what I have seen of Barry in recent months, and he also seems to link up well with Gerrard in the centre. But at 18M we need to look elsewhere, far too much for a player like Barry imo.

Wouldn't be like the press to get it totally wrong mind

I don't think it would be. What would that acheive really? The thread began in the latter part 06/07 season, and should be allowed to carry on as it is imo.

Team threads don't really seem to be seasonal at all tbh...Newcastle, Blackburn, West Ham, Leeds, Cardiff, Chester, Wrexham and now Spurs...non are new specific to the 08/09 season.

Spanish star David Villa has hinted he would like to move to Liverpool, if he heads to England this summer.

The Valencia striker has lit up Euro 2008 with four goals in their opening two group games.

A host of clubs are tracking Villa with Liverpool and Chelsea reported to be heading the queue for the diminutive front-man.

Villa, who has linked up so well with current Reds star Fernando Torres for Spain, admits he would be tempted by the prospect of playing with him on a weekly basis.

"Liverpool and Chelsea are both big clubs with a lot of attraction," he told the News of the World.

Villa also admitted that Liverpool's Spanish coach Rafa Benitez could play a big role in attracting him as he tried to sign him earlier in his career.

"Liverpool have a Spanish coach and I also have a lot of friends there," he said.

"When Rafa was coach at Valencia and I was at Zaragoza there was contact about me joining Valencia but I couldn't arrive until the year after he left there."

I'd be quite excited if we could link up Villa and Torres. Believe it when we see it though.

Surely if Aston Villa don't want to sell Barry then it's up to them to set a price level that they would sell for, no matter how unrealistic the price may appear. If Barcelona wanted Torres, even if Torres was tempted, you wouldn't really sell him for £30m, would you? You would ask for nearer £50m if you could get it, otherwise no sale. Surely the same principles are being applied here?

If Barry wants to PLAY Champions League football then I can understand him wanting to sign for Liverpool, but if he wants to WIN anything I think he would be better moving to Arsenal. He would be the ideal replacement for Flamini.

Although he is probably too old for Arsene

Well mackem we got your mob first

Don't see Arsenal looking at Barry, probably have someone in the side who can take over from Flamini already. I think we have won the Champions League and FA Cup since Arsenal last lifted a trophy, so a move to Liverpool can't be that bad

Away to Sunderland first, always seem to get them in August when they are in the Prem. I'd have preferred a first game at Anfield but I think the last time we had that was 6 seasons a go - and we lost. With the European Champions League qualifier games around the same time though a home game would have been a nice change.

I think we have started the season under Rafa on the opening day with 3 draws and a win. We need a good start next season, with the Champions League qualifying rounds changing 4th isn't good enough anymore, gotta be in the top 3 at worst really or face a much tougher qualifying tie.

His price will be doubled after these goals for Spain. Would have been cheap after the bad season Valencia had if there wasn't the Euro. We'll see .. I personally don't want him. I prefer a big and technically gifted striker around Torres ... Berbatov maybe?

Kuyt is not suited to the spainish game. His play is too northern european in style. wouldn't work in la liga.

a question if I may ? what kind of transfer budget are liverpool generally assumed to have this season, what with the ownership problems and expanding stadium costs ?

I'm talking about net expenditure, lets assume the Barry transfer is paid for by the sale of alonso and riise, so we'll price this at zero.

10m or 15m at the most ? I'd assume Rafa needs to sell to buy ??

Btw for once I'm not ripping the piss out of liverpool, we can waituntil sept to do that

Crouch will go I have no doubt in that for say another 10-15m. Not sure what the budget is, not been splashed around the media which is pleasing to see.
