Default Diving at Euro 2008

Has UEFA told the referees to stop handing out cards when they feel a player has dived in the penalty box??

Been watching most of the matches this tournament, and seen on countless occasions the referee usher up a player after diving in the penalty box, and claiming a penalty. I remember they were told to clamp down on this before, but havent even seen 1 yellow given out since the start for this.

Just means that theyrs sh1t loads of actors diving about like fairies whenever they get near the 6-yard box, as at the worst the ref just lets play go on

agreee - they have clamped down on giving the free kicks (or so it seems) but they arent penalising the diving.

I hate it.

Scotty, whats it in Scottish football? I used to watch a fair bit of it on TV and used to love the harder attitude. It was more like 'real' football. Is it still like that or are you getting pansies playing in Scotland now?

It pisses me off fcukin bigtime!

Why the hell are they not bringing in TV replays and giving players who are clearly cheating, what they deserve, a yellow card at the minimum.

Cricket and Rugby have brought in TV, it's time football got a grip!

Its still a fair bit harsher than "European leagues" but their also calming down a bit.

The refs tend to have a visible word with the player, and if it continues flashes the card, where as before the card would just come out. The Old Firm see quite a few cards in a season for it, as think the refs are smarting up to some of there moves, players like Petrov in his hay day for Celtic would see cards pretty often towards the end.

But granted the refs in this Euros have been very clever in there penalty calls, only seen a couple despite all the tumbles. In scotland, the refs would have awarded more, as (certainly when I watch the games), the more a team attacks, and the more times players fall in the box, they still seem to be influenced by past decisions, and thats why the old firm come under trouble, because they attack so often, and even if theyrs no foul, after a while the ref makes the penalty call peer pressure or such nonsence.

Same as yourself though mate, lack of Setanta in my flat has meant being unable to watch most games last season, so mostly running on the season before that.

The simple reason why the refs aren't booking divers in this tournament is because UEFA, or more specifically Michel Platini, don't think diving is wrong.

Quote:
Platini gave an intriguing interview to L'Equipe in which he covered many subjects. When the talk turned to technology, he reiterated his belief that using video evidence during a match would cause too many stoppages - that it would be "useless" and would "ruin the game". He repeated his preference for stationing additional referees in each box instead. But more oddly given Uefa's previous announcement, he also suggested that he was opposed to using video evidence retrospectively. He even went so far as to criticise the French league authorities for imposing bans on Johan Micoud (for provoking a last-minute penalty against Nancy by hauling down a defender and pretending it was he who had been fouled) and Fabrice Fiorèse (for winning a penalty by diving). "It was wrong to suspend Micoud," Platini said. "It was the referee who cocked up ... I was against that suspension, just as I was not in favour of suspending Fiorese."

Asked whether he reckoned Micoud should have been congratulated instead, Platini replied: "No, as Uefa president I can't do that. But football has its ... things. Maybe I'm too old school. People say I'm a romantic, but I prefer to say I'm a traditionalist. When I was a player I simulated to help my team win. Everyone said to me: 'well done'. Referees were getting things wrong back then too."

shame about Pratini but with any luck his successor will base some of his strengths as wishing to tackle cheats.

volkeron cannot be defended for pushing koller, but ffs - koller nearly rolled out of the stadium.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - anyone caught doing this shit should be forced to play a senior game of rugby before being able to return to football - lets see the cnuts try that shit there!

Agreed, the only counter argument people ever use is "but you couldn't have TV replays in an amateur park game. Football's great because all you need is 2 goalnets and a ball". That's a load of bollocks, there's a big difference between pro and amateur football and they should use the technology available. Cricket & Rugby use it, it doesn't stop people playing the game at amateur level does it!
