Default Czech Rep v Turkey draw leads to penalties

Did anyone know before the tournament that if the Czech Rep game against Turkey ends up as a draw then it goes to penalties as they will have same points, same goals and same conceded? Just wondering what people thought of a group game going to penalties. It's a bit weird that they are the rules. Apparently if they hadn't have played each other last and the group ended up with two teams level it would have gone to the Uefa coeffiecient score, but would have thought they'd have done that anyway.

Penalties this early in the competition!! Would there be extra time too? Or just penalties immediately after the 90 minutes was over?

Definitely goes to penalties, I had a quick check on the uefa website last night. Since the teams will have same gd same goals scored if it ends a draw and no other team can possibly join them in a tie for second place then it will be a penalty shootout at the end of 90 minutes if the game ends in a draw.

wonder what the turkish goalie is like from the spot. he's a superb agile shotstopper and dodgy on crosses. those keepers are always great in shootouts.

cech is awful considering he's a world class keeper.

That's interesting. It certainly explains why one of the bookmakers (I think it may have been Pinnacle) are stating that Penalty shoot-outs don't count for their bets on the group games. I thought it was completely unnecessary and they were just a bunch of Americans that didn't understand the game !

But what would happen if two teams tied for second place like this, and they didn't play each other in th efinal game.

Would they get together and play a pen shootout the next day ??

No it would have gone to Uefa coefficients, which is how well teams did in qualifying for the last World Cup and Euro 2008. Czech Rep would have won this this, so in a way it is unlucky for them they are playing Turkey last now. The list is below for how they'd decide.

Ranking and coefficients for all 16 teams when applying criteria (f) :
1. 2.417 - Holland
2. 2.409 - Croatia
3. 2.364 - Italy
4. 2.333 - Czech Republic
5. 2.273 - Sweden
6. 2.250 - Romania
6. 2.250 - Germany
8. 2.192 - Portugal
9. 2.182 - Spain
10. 2.167 - Greece
10. 2.167 - Poland
12. 2.091 - France
13. 1.958 - Russia
13. 1.958 - Turkey
15. 1.800 - Switzerland
16. 1.500 - Austria
