Default wireless help

quick question: our internet wireless keeps losing connection every now and then - just needs to be switched off for a minute and seems ok. Problem is this has gotten stupid now over past few months and has already disconnected several times this evening

is this a usual wireless problem or is it likely to be something else?

my mate set it up for me and would normally help me out but he's away for a few weeks atm

It could be something interfering with the wireless signal - other wireless devices? (wireless phones? Doorbells? Video Senders? etc) or things like microwaves.... Can you link the disconnections with something that is specifically happening? (e.g. someone at the door...or telephone ringing)...

You can try a different channel and see if that stops it.

How strong is the signal? How far are you from the router?

Can you try a wired connection and see if you still suffere disconnections....

someone local seems to have a new wireless - have seen the BTRouter thing on my list of available networks. its not been there long and could be within the same timescale as the wireless getting worse - may be to do with this then.

wouldnt be a distance problem as i'm sat underneath it as it type and the missu is is the next room on hers (happy married lives eh? )

i've got a wire somewhere to connect to computer but dont think it would allow both our computers on together - will give it a go if it becomes silly though and see what happens

cheers GaF (again!)

If there's a new network within range then definitely try a different channel (or use theirs and switch yours off )

You need to log on to the router - probably though the browser - with IP address 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.0 or similar and you can set channel numbers there......

EDIT - Be careful though - get it wrong and you might not be able to get in at all Make sure you have the cable ready just in case....

You should be able to hardwire yours and the wife's can still work off wireless.

If you both lose the conection then it's a fault at the exchange. If it's just the wife who loses the connection then it looks like the channel will need changing because it more than likely it's clashing with the other persons setup.

i should have a computer-knowing mate coming over on the weekend at some point so if we're both sober enough i may have a look at it with him.

Mate we had exactly this 2 weeks ago, started happening on the day a BT engineer was up the phone pole opposite, turns out one of our neighbours had the BT home hub installed (same as us).

If you go to the BT Hub Manager icon on your desktop it gives step by step instructions on how to change the channels.

Failing that use the live help icon and they can do it remotely for you (yup, the step by step was simple enough for me )

Worked for us and we've had no trouble since

I've been getting this same problem at night the last few weeks. Using Tiscali and it's a very common problem not only on this ISP but others too if you search. Very annoying for me as disturbs my poker playing but not a lot seems can be done as being passed around person to person when i ring isn't enthralling. Probably the networks are getting overloaded as more people get better b/b. Basically ISPs get away with murder and something needs doing.
