Default Spyware/ Malware

Not really sure of the difference, just found out they're vaguely the same from a very brief look on a few forums.

Anyway i'm after a trusted programme which can prevent/detect any spyware/malware. I've downloaded 3 diff things in the last 30mins, but before i reached the end of each download i found very critical comments of the programmes one being hitman pro and another the top downloaded spyware programme from downloads.com so canceled the d/l. I have the free AVG on my comp which deals with many things, but not sure it deals with this.

What do you guys use? Cheers

Haqven't used a spyware prog for ages.

When I did, spybot search and destroy and Lavasoft Adaware were the ones I used.

I use Comodo Pro Firewall that has a Malware blocker as an optional extra.

System Mechanic pisses all over anything on the market imo, it fixes far more than you realise at first.

Will root out any spyware, fix registry problems, defragmented files, get rid of uneccessary programs running on your pc, it even emails you once a week to tell you how your system health and system safety is.

System mechanic's a sack of shite IMO. It does stuff that doesn't really achieve much just to make it look like it does something.

There's loads of free programs out there that do what system mechanic claims to do but better.

I know many that will disagree with you on that.

For spyware, spybot and Adaware will do everything that system mechanic does, then there's 'Hijack this'.

For defrag the windows utility is more than adequate if you defrag regularly. If you want to pay you can look at diskeeper.

There's loads of good free registry fixing software.

System mechanic's just totally surplus to requirements for me.

There isn't much that can make a difference to the performance of the PC with regards to the registry software IMHO. All they really do is remove redundant entries, and don't forget the registry is just a text file!

You would be better off opening Services and turning off un-necessary things that are running from the default installation of windows.

I turned a load of stuff off years ago, in fact i don't even have the Print Spooler Service running as i don't print anything often enough :-)

Theres a list via google that lists services that are running that you might never need.

FFS I should have known better than to listen to a west ham fan . Downloaded comodo pro firewall, i have a look on the log on it and it's going mental with severe warnings that such and such is trying to get through such and such, the next thing i know it's bloody crashed and i had to restart my comp.

Now there aren't as many sever alerts but what the foob am i meant to do with these alerts?

The main one re-accuring is: windows explorer has tried to use windows/system/svchost.exe through OLE which can be used to hijack other applications.

I use Firefox so should i uninstall internet explorer? or uninstall svchost if i can?

Not gonna uninstall svchost apparantly it's an important thing for the computer, but this windows explorer thing i found, double clicked on it and it took me to 'my documents' so i'm leaving that too. I'm pretty sure the firewall is stopping all these random things coming through...

Most of the alerts will just be false alarms.

I don't bother with a software firewall myself, I just use a router.

You really don't want to uninstall scvhost BTW

LMAO

Seriously, all you need to do is click the allow button to programs that you know are ok.

After a while the pop up alerts will be far and few between as the firewall "learns" your prefrences.

If you download the free malware blocker you should hardly know it's there.

As PaulM states, having a router is better as all attacks can be stopped there and not even reach your PC.

I use SM6 about once per week.

Most of it I like but some of it is a pain in the ar*e.

Best of all I have it for free.
