depends on your ip address, most networks use "fake" internal addresses and NAT them behind a single real one. A few ranges like 10.x.x.x, 172.18.x.x & 192.168.x.x are the most common ones used.

They are classified as non routable

What is the IP address that you both have ??

Two people won't have the same IP address at the same time but I think it's usual for each provider to have a pool of IP addresses and they give you one ech time you connect. So for instance loads of people on the forum are on NTL in the North West, if you do an IP check you find that they all share IP addresses.

Al, What's your ISP?

I'm guessing NTL or AOL?

I'm not certain, but I think PaulM has it partly right and partly wrong. NTL and AOL do seem to have a system of area IP's which cover a lot of customers, and I believe it is possible that you can be online at the same time with the same IP.

Well you learn something new everyday.

I thought they doled out a unique IP to each individual.

If two people have the same IP how do they know where to send the data?

I'm not saying I am right, but they do seem to have area IP's rather than individual ones.

As for your last point, not sure, they must have some sort of system, although this is AOL we're talking about, the worst ISP and software on earth, so who knows.

If you google the IP address Wikipedia come up with the following..

This IP address is that of an AOL web proxy

So all that is happening is you are both going through the same web proxy server. A proxy server is server that simply forwards your requests for a web page to another server. AOL have a range of these, probably organised geographically.

I think the IP is the IP address of an AOL proxy server. So the data goes to
AOL and then gets sorted there, I guess?

Clever stuff really. I've always wondered how they make it go down the right wire.

More to the point how would these people know which pipe to send the data down?http://www.scenta.co.uk/Gadgets/1113...-gas-pipes.htm

The mind boggles. Well mine does anyway.

There are static and dynamic IP addresses.

If you have static address, you will always have the same and there's no way any other computer will have that address in the same time.

As for dynamic addresses, they are different every time you connect to the internet, and they are assigned in some kind of patterns, as AJ already told in his post.

Again, I dont think it is possible that 2 different computer share the same IP address at the same time.

100% impossible, never going to happen. A block of IP addresses belongs to an ISP, they lease them out to clients for a fixed period of time using a system called DHCP. An IP address is unique to a computer, and will never be duplicated. Internet would fall to bits if it was otherwise.

If people are being reported as having the same IP, then the ISP is giving people non-routable addresses and pointing all their traffic to a proxy server, and Nat'ing (network address translation) at their proxy. All companies do this for internal Pc's, but for an ISP to do this is pretty shocking.
