Hi I've heard the word proxy servers mentioned with something to do with internet security

can anyone give me an idiots (and I am an idiot when it comes to these things!!) guide to what one is and what to do with one/why to have one?

Why to have one = paranoia.. Plus side is anonimitity only if you have an anon proxy, which means you can browse
web undercover without anyone tracing you. Very good for hacking websites . You want some decent ones, here they
are.

How to use = open IE, goto Tools menu up top, click on Internet Options - Connections - Lan Settings. Click bottom
tab - Use A Proxy For Your Lan, enter any of these these - The port number is after the quote ":" ie- 12.158.228.18 port number 8080

Not sure whether it was mentioned in the above posts and it also depends where you are aconnecting from and who has set your comp (they just might prefer using a proxy or there might be several comps and stuff). The magic connotation with Internet security is Open relay - you have to make sure it's not set with an open relay whoch allows someone to send stuff (spam) from your comp - briefly said. That's why you should also use something like a personal firewall (soft - like Kerio which is free) to monitor and manage traffic on your computer. grc.com is a good site to test your comp for any leakage (shields up test). Not only about proxy's and hopefully helpful.

YES, but seeing as they are anonymous you can't be traced..
