Monday afternoon I was halfway through downloading some casino software when everything froze. I turned the power off as I was unable to shut the comp down properly. I had no previous problems btw with the computer, it hadn`t been playing up on the lead up to this.
So I rebooted, the Windows carried out it`s own diskcheck as it does when you haven`t shut it down properly, but it froze again just as the diskcheck had finished.

So It was power off then reboot again but I bypassed the diskcheck this time and it did eventually reboot......25 minutes later then everything was painfully slow. On advice I`ve recently tried to download WindowsOneCare which has failed everytime, and I`ve got hold of System Mechanic and when I do a check with that it gets so far through the tasks then just stays there for ages and ages doing nothing so I have to abort the check.

Last night though while attempting to reboot again after another seize up, I let the diskcheck run and it did fix some errors, 6 bloody hours that took too but things have improved. It still takes an age to boot up but when it has, and I access the internet, things seem just slightly slower than before but good enough to use without wanting to throw the laptop through the window. But something is clearly wrong and I need to sort it.

Any ideas folks?

if all else fails andy you could always re-format the lot!!

You will lose everything that youv'e not backed up onto disk etc but It should solve your problem as long as there isnt any hardware damages..

Maybe a bit obvious but have You tried a system restore back to before you had problems?

yeah gaz, 1st thing I tried mate. no luck there.

I'm a big fan of www.pcpitstop.com - run the "full tests" and see if that comes up with anything

You might find that the casino software (which can be riddled with malware) is "illegally" trying to log data from your laptop to their site at startup but it can't so laptop just hangs around waiting for a connection. Ctrl_Alt_Del buttons pressed together will tell you what is running. System Mechanic can remove or switch off any bogus startup program you don't need.

If its malware or spyware then running HijackThis (its free) will more than likely flag up any problems.

Post the HijackThis log file here, some one will look at it ( i will ), and should spot anything bad.
