Default Password Problems

OK guys, I have problems.

1st, My lad set up his desk top PC with passwords.

For some reason or other it does not regonise it.

So I said go via F8 and go in safe mode to delete the passwords, well even going that way he has to put in the password.

got a number on back of tower to call tomorrow.

just wondering if anyone has any other ideas.

Are you talking about the XP password?

If you've forgotten the password of all the admin accounts I *think* resetting is tricky.

I had a similar PC a bit back and I ended up downloading something off the net and had to make a copy of it on a floppy then boot the PC from the floppy and delete the password. Bit of a pain in the arse truth be told. Try google it will probably come up.

Who did you get the machine off of? Do you know what the factory set admin password was? (Assuming you didn't install Windows yourself)

When you get to the XP login screen, try CTRL ALT DEL (which brings up a login screen) - try username "admin" (or is it "administrator") and try a few of the passwords there....

If there are numbers in the password, check NUM LOCK is set correctly. Check the CAPS LOCK too...

Is there only the one profile set up on the machine?

If I understood you correctly, you need to reset a BIOS password?
In that case you'll need to remove the battery from motherboard to clear it's memory. Some MBs have a jumper for resetting password.

Or you can try some standard backdoor passes here:
http://www.tech-faq.com/reset-bios-password.shtml

P.S.
From personal experience: the most usual thing when your PC is not accepting your pass is that you are trying to enter numbers when 'num lock' is switched off.

Ok Gaf.

We had the password set up ourselves, I can log on as guest, also log on under one of the other users passwords.

But cannot log on to main user with the correct password that we used before, Only thing i can think of is kids used it and altered it and did not know what they were doing.

Need to get logged in through the admistrator to alter anything

Firstly I assume that none of the other accounts are also Administrators? If they are you should be able to use them to change the password of the main account.

I used to have a bootable CD which allowed you to change the Admin password. I might be able to dig it out at home and post it to you if you can't find another method of hacking the password.
