Default Laptop Help Please

Hello fellas, I'm after some help please.

Basically I've got my laptop set up exactly how I want it now, Torrents getting decent speeds, ports forwarded, all my programs on etc.

My question is though, how can I back this up so if my machine ever went down, I could get back to where I am now, without having to reinstall everything etc?

I'd like to back it up to an external USB powered drive if possible.

Yep Ghost is the way forward.

A full image of your laptop would probably be about 4Gb, so as long as you have that amount of space you will be able to take an exact image of your machine as it is.

Shadow protect would do the job perfectly.

Ok - so I've got plenty of space on my USB drive for this, which means i need to look into this 'ghost' thing.

However, as the backup would be on my external drive which is USB - how would this work if my whole laptop went down and I couldn't even get into windows ?
Obviously I'm assuming that USB needs windows to run ?

Apologies if it's a dumb question, but I'm useless at this sort of stuff.

Cheers.

Acronis True Image Home is the easiest for you to use.
You can find free older versions with PC magazines but latest version costs about £20.

There are two methods.
Acronis can put an image on your laptop hard disk but in a hidden and protected partition. If your system crashes you reboot and press the F11 key (menu comes up on screen) then request to restore that image from your protected partition.

If you do not want to do that you get a boot CD with Acronis. You put that CD in you laptop - reboot ( It does not need Windows) and it takes you into a version of the Acronis program from where you mount the image (simple menu choice) from your USB hard drive and request it to be restored into your laptop.

It is all much easier than it sounds.
You are back up running in 20 minutes.
