Microsoft pay 50 million to Rockstar for extra content

We have all heard the news that Rockstar have only released content exclusive for the Xbox 360 so far and here is some proof that Rockstar aren't just doing this out of friendship with Microsoft. It turns out that Microsft are paying them a cool 50 million to bring the content exclusively to the Xbox Marketplace

The transcript from an internal Take-2 conference call that was undertaken on June 11th has found its way onto the internet and it includes a rather interesting quote from the company’s Chief Financial Officer, Lainie Goldstein. It reads as follows:

The first 25 (million) is for the first episodic content package that’s supposed to go out and that is in March of ’08. That’s why it moved into current because it’s in the next 12 months. The second 25 (million) will be for the second episodic, the episode, and that will be later in fiscal ’08.

This would suggest that Microsoft paid Take-2, GTAIV’s publisher, US$50 million for the exclusive downloadable content that will become available after the game’s release.

Also another article saying same thing

Microsoft Paid $50 Million for GTA IV DLC

Posted at 00:33 GMT by Chris :: Category: GTA IV :: Comments: 55
If you're wondering why it seems that only the Xbox 360 version of Grand Theft Auto IV is getting downloadable content, the reason is possibly because Microsoft have paid a whopping fifty million dollars for it.

Stock analysis website SeekingAlpha have referenced last weeks press release from Take-Two regarding it's financial results and a conference call in relation to that, where it is revealed that the $50 million "Deferred revenue" figure is actually coming from Microsoft, who will pay Take-Two $25 million for one downloadable episode in March '08 and the other $25 million later on in fiscal '08 for the second episode. We can assume from this that these are likely to be the dates when we will actually receive the content, although it's not certain.
It's a long article to read in full but this is the quote which confirms the above:

The PS3 will get DLC but as i said above, its gonna be like clothes, paint jobs for cars, or new vehicles, but with M$ giving rockstar 50 mill i cant see DLC missions coming to PS3 anytime soon.

More game info (cant remember what i ve posted b4) so sorry if i posted this already

From PSM3

• According to the journalists, the first hands-on minutes were enough to solidify their feelings of how the game is going to kick ass.

• Liberty City has more streets than any other game in the genre.

• You cannot enter every building. However, you can interact with most of them. Rooftops, stairways, fire escapes, partial interiors, etc.

• Niko will not be able to manage property, gangs or trade.

• Bowling, dart games, drinking games, strip clubs and night clubs will be available.

• The core of GTA IV is all about the human relationship.

• Sometimes, your contacts may call you during a hard mission to ask you a service. In this instance, you can choose between the mission or whatever your contact is asking. If you ditch your mission to do things with your phone contact, you may see consequences. Whether or not you will be able to replay the mission that you went away from remains to be seen.

• The new impression of seeing a next generation living, breathing city is absolutely stunning.

• The pedestrian population density changes between the place/borough you are in.

• If you walk around the street with a gun in your hand, pedestrians who have a phone can call the police.

• In one instance when Niko tried to carjack someone, the scared innocent driver sped away so fast that he hit two cars.

• During the first mission that the journalists played, they tried to carjack someone without a gun. The driver beat up Niko. Niko got beat up so bad that he ended up at the hospital.

• Pedestrians react in a very realistic way. The journalists said that it is as if each person in the game leads his/her own life.

• It took 15 minutes to go through 2/3 of Manhattan with a boat. It took 10 minutes by car to go through Brooklyn and Central Park.

• The cars can be destroyed very realistically. Every part of the car can bend and fold.

• GTA IV has a wider variety of mission types. The missions are more difficult than in previous games.

• The game is done. Most clipping bugs are gone. The game is super smooth in terms of frame rate. (Note: The game is not 100% done. It is not "gold" yet.)

• If you press the jump button, Niko can climb everywhere. In other words, wall climbing from San Andreas has returned. You can strafe on walls, too.

• There is a swimming club.

• If you have five stars, it's very difficult to escape from the cops. They are everywhere and they don't joke with you. They are smarter than in previous incarnations of the series.

• While in a boat, the sound effects are awesome. You can hear the sound of the waves that beat the front of the boat.

• With powerful weapons, you can shoot through the walls.

• The weather that was seen during the four hours of gameplay included fog, rain, sun and clouds. A variety of colors can be seen depending on the time of day.

• When you die, you pay $100 but you get to keep your weapons.

• When you go to jail after getting busted, you pay more than $100 and you lose your weapons.

• While you are drunk, it's very difficult to control Niko. The drunk sensation is perfectly done.

• When stealing a car from a pedestrian, Niko didn't get into the car before the pedestrian sped up. Niko held onto the car as the pedestrian glided along the road. (Note: It may have been the pedestrian holding on to a car Niko was in. The translation is sketchy.)

• Choppers with search lights are in the game.

•Women will striptease in strip clubs when you pay.

• Depending on the borough you are in, pedestrians may speak different languages. Italian, Chinese and those in the Bronx are different when it comes to language.

• Health kits are available only in buildings.

• Grenade and molotov cocktail sound effects are stunning.

There's talk that the DLC for XBox 360 could be of the size of GTA San Andreas (Which was "just a sequel" to GTA III using the same game engine) - basically a complete new game in its own right.....if that's true, it's mega - and PS3 gamers will definitely be missing out on something pretty big!!!

The $50m it seems as well isn't the budget for the DLC, but just the price for it to be XBox 360 exclusive - Rockstar will still sell this, and they will get any profits from it - the budget to make the DLC should therefore be significantly over the £50m Microsoft have paid!!

I preordered mine from Shopto.net, £36.99 for a number of reasons.

1/They don't take your money till they have the stock
2/You get it on day of release or the next day
3/Used them twice b4 and both prices have been good (PES 08 £24.99 and COD4 was £30)

now after praising them my GTA order will be an almighty Fu@k up

GTA series at 66 million units sold to date

Posted on March 12th, 2008 at 07:50 EDT

Publisher Take-Two Interactive has announced that the Grand Theft Auto series has sold 66 million units worldwide since its inception in 1997.

The impressive figures have established the crime series as the company’s biggest franchise to date, according to Take-Two Chairman, Strauss Zelnick.

Elsewhere, the publisher divulged sales figures for its remaining Intellectual Properties (IP), revealing that Midnight Club has sold 11.5 million units to date, with Manhunt, Bully and Red Dead Revolver all selling 1.5 million units each.

Civilisation has also performed well, selling 8 million copies to date, followed by Max Payne at 7 million, with BioShock and Mafia both selling 2 million units. Finally its latest IP, Carnival Games, is said to be approaching the one million sales mark.

Executives also noted that Rockstar Games is currently developing “at least one major sequel” due for release next year, but did not go into detail on the matter.

I would like to see a sequel to Bully

Rockstar is EA 'primary interest'

By Darren Waters

Technology editor, BBC News website

Grand Theft Auto IV is released at the end of April

Rockstar and its franchise Grand Theft Auto is the "primary interest" of EA's attempted purchase of Take Two games, said chief executive John Riccitello.

Mr Riccitello said: "I believe the company is fully justified in calling themselves Rockstar because that's what they are in this industry."

Take Two turned down EA's first approach and so the games giant is now targeting shareholders directly.
Take Two boss Strauss Zelnick said the EA offer undervalued the firm.
Mr Zelnick has said EA should wait until after the release of Grand Theft Auto IV on 29 April. Analysts predict it will be the biggest release of the year, with sales upwards of 10 million copies.

Mr Riccitello told BBC News: "If we don't conclude this transaction, if we walk because of whatever level of inability to get this done, the scary thing is what the stock trades at after we leave, not after 29 April."

He said Take Two had four of the best studios in the industry: Rockstar, makers of Grand Theft Auto; Irrational, makers of Bioshock; Firaxis, home to Sid Meir and Civilization and Visual Concepts, makers of sport titles.

"What we are attracted to is what we value in our own studios: great developers and great intellectual property."
Pre-orders of Grand Theft Auto IV have been better-than-expected

Mr Riccitello said he had great respect for the producers behind Grand Theft Auto, Sam and Dan Houser and Leslie Benzies.

"The big headline here is that our primary interest is in Rockstar and the intellectual properties around Rockstar."
He said the bid was not an attempt to remove a competitor in the field of sport titles.

"Sports games are secondary consideration here," he said.
He said he had no fear that the value EA placed on Take Two could be damaged if the trio of Rockstar creators decided not to pursue further Grand Theft Auto titles after the latest release.

He said: "There is no doubt that EA is several times larger than Take Two - everyday somebody walks in and somebody walks out.

What we have got right now is a corporate issue that has nothing to do with the people who build these games

John Riccitello, EA

"If the wrong guy walks out, we have an issue to deal with. But we don't stop making games."

He added: "In case of Rockstar I would point out that the leaders are young, vibrant, they're talented and committed.

"And what we have got right now is a corporate issue that has nothing to do with the people who build these games."
He said concerns that EA's buyout would stifle innovation were unfounded and pointed to franchises and games that had improved after the firm had bought the original development talent.

"We worked collectively with Will Wright to create The Sims. When we bought Maxis, Sim City was selling 7 to 800,000 copies.

"The Sims is a level of performance to Sim City that the Empire State Building is to a very nice house." He said games like Battlefield, Burnout, Need for Speed and Madden were franchises which were stronger following EA's purchase of the original development firms.

Was thinking of buying a PS3 pretty much solely because of GTAIV at first, but now with these added features on the XBox version and people say PES is much better on the Xbox i'm torn.
Also don't know about this Blu-ray thing - does it mean you can't play ordinary dvds - they have to be blu-ray dvds or what ~?
Cheers.

Its XBOX if your basing your console choice on GTA, as both look the same graphics wise and game play wise, but XBOX getting 2 extra mission, both consoles will be getting download content (DLC)

Also the PS3 can play DVD and it can even upscale them so they look better, But XBOX HD DVD is now dead and Blue Ray is the disc of choice.

PS3 is the Future of gaming at the mo and the games coming this year will be awesome (this is thanks to Blue ray) cause of its storage capacity.

If your just gonna get GTA (Which is silly and short sighted) then XBOX but for future games and gaming PS3 would be my choice.

Also the PS3 failure rate is 0.2% were the XBOX is 33%

If GTA is your primary concern, then it has to be XBox 360 - sounds like PS3 players are going to miss out on a LOT of content....

Prices starting at £139 now too - http://www.shopto.net/page.php?page=search&matcat=&categ=&platform=&codarts=XB2AR02%20XB2ELITE%20XB23600 - PS3 costs double that....

Buy a XBox360 now, and if PS3 arrives, buy one in a year or twos time, probably significantly cheaper - you'll probably end up with an XBox and PS3 for the same price as a PS3 now....

Quote:
Rockstar isn't saying much about GTA IV's exclusive Xbox 360 DLC (rumoured to have cost MS upwards of $50m), but the first hints on what we might be able to expect from the downloadable 'episodes' have finally emerged, in the latest issue of Edge magazine.
Speaking to Edge in its massive behind the scenes GTA feature (we almost got our wages docked reading it), Rockstar boss Sam Houser hints that the 360 download content might take the form of random missions, thought it's all dependent on the reaction of fans, he says.
"In the game, you might be walking around and then someone will come up to you and say something like, 'Hey, I need your help', and you'll be like, 'What? This isn't a story mission', and he'll be like, 'You see that room up there? That's my wife and she's f***ing some bloke, and I need you to go and do...' and this little story will unfold from there just randomly," Houser told Egde.
Advertisement:
"The opportunity for things like that [with DLC] I would say is enormous. Really, though, for the downloadable content in general, it's about seeing how people get turned on by the game, and then we will tailor the production."
It might not sound like exactly what we were expecting for Microsoft's (alleged) $50m tag, but Houser promises that even if it does come in the from of a mission pack, the 360 DLC will still be "substantial".
"I think the mission packs with the episodes are going to be pretty deep, offering another full-on adventure in this world," he told Edge. "I think we will be in a position to market them not a million miles away from the way the boxed game is marketed."
Assuming people like the game then Houser's sense is that they'll probably like the episodes too, he says.
"And if they like the episodes it will probably make sense to market them aggressively, and we want people to be there on that first day as much as is realistic. Our goal will be to fry those Xbox Live servers - we want to have as many people tune in at that moment as possible."
Don't worry though, the marketing budget isn't going to spawn from your Microsoft Points: "You'll get a lot of content for your money," says Houser. "There are too many stories at the moment of people having the feeling that they're not getting enough for their money in terms of downloadable content.
"I never want people feeling that we've duped them in any way, shape or form. That's something that we've been into from the beginning."
The full 16-page talk with Houser, in which he reveals the stories behind GTA III, Vice City, San Andreas and yes, GTA IV, is in Edge 187, on sale March 13

Thanks for the info. guys.

Thing is i'm not that into gaming anymore so don't know about new games and stuff (will check threads on here) it's just GTAIV which i'll need to play.

Definitely need to research more into each console and see which suits me most and what games there are for each.

Or alternatively i could become a better poker player and buy both

Nice one mate

A few of us on here that are Call Of Duty 4 regulars
