| When I was rebuilding my PC, I saved data to an external (IOMEGA) USB hard drive, but at some point it appears to have become damaged (not physically) and it looks like I've lost most of my archive ![]() Anyone know any software that may recover data from the drive? Or any other hints and tips that may fix it? When I plug the USB drive in now, it shows up as a drive and maps it to E: (but is not recognised as the drive with the name/label in the way it used to be). It is not accessable for navigation.

| Can you try USB hard drive in a friend's PC? If Windows can't read it then software cannot recover data. You can run a Linux live CD that loads its OS into memory. That can connect to your USB HD and transfer files. Could take out USB HD from caddy and mount in PC and see if that reads. |

| I have tried the USB drive in alternative machines and the response is identical (even with different Windows OS). Its been suggested that I try "Recover my Files" - I dont know the software, but will give this a try (though from what you're saying, doesnt sound too hopeful). I'll look down the Linux option after "Recover my Files" (I've never tried Linux, so dont really understand at the moment your suggestion - but I'll work it out )I've never disassembled the USB HD - internally is it just a standard ide drive? So it will currently be plugged into an ide to USB convertor?

| Info for Knoppix Linux recovery: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic76094.html Yes, the external USB is just a normal HD plugged into a socket. Usually no more than 4 screws to undo case and take it out. |
