Does anyone know how I can open a file with the above extension on it?

Just open it in Notepad

Is it a movie?
If it is, then use VLC player.

It can be anything - depends if you know what the sender attached - this happens if the mail goes via a Linux server - it's often enough either to open it as it is (especially in OpenOffice) or rename it, add the actual ending (like .doc, .xls). Hope it helps
