I had this a while back with another but Windows posted a message
about downloading a codec.
I went to the link it gave me and downloaded and installed the codec

what's the file extension? is it .avi?

If so get a program called ffdshow:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow

download aand install that and you should now be able to play just about everything and anything without installing the individual codecs.

Just load any movie you are having problems with an the program will show you what codec is needed etc.
