Default Buying a Laptop

Am planning on buying a new laptop at the end of the month but don't know where to get the best value from.

My mate suggested buying online at dabs.com, i've also had a look a dell.com, but am not sure whether to buy online or just stick to good old PC world, just in case any problem arise - it will be easier to sort with PC world.

Anyone got any suggestion or tips.

Cheers

you see lots of offers on laptops at the mo , the thing is with them is that you dont get them cheap anywhere , you cant build them cheap, I got my p.c for 290 quid and its the dogs but you cant get an equvilent p.c for less that 599.

go for the extras you can get mate , if the convenience of P.C world is what you think is most important then go for that.
i think dell sell really good laptops but i have no idea what the c.s is like.

hope that helped

Ive had a Toshiba Satelitte for about a year now and after looking at loads of online dealers I decided to get it from the High St (Currys). I`d heard horror stories about many customer services so I dreaded it when I had a problem with it, but it was picked up and returned within 3 days so I can`t grumble one iota. I think I just like to know that I can go and personally chew someones ear off if there`s ever a problem. I hate trying to sort problems over the phone. you`re harder to get rid of when youre standing in front of an assistant :b

Default laptop

cheers for the advice guys.

you're probably right about the customer service over the fone ian, but i'm gonna risk it and go for a Dell as they offer 1 years free pick up if anything f*cks up. i've been told that Dell systems are really good too so i'll take the risk.

cheers

Dell is a good choice.

I've had 4 Dell machines (2 DT, 2 LT) and have had no problems at all.

I bought a Dell Inspiron August 2 years ago and haven’t had a single problem with it. Powerful processor and good specs. The battery (which I’ve never changed) lasts around 2 and a half hours. Only quibble is I had to buy an A drive separately and you do I think pay over the odds for the Dell name. If you've got the cash I think its as good as is out there in terms of reliability and performance (if nto value for money).

If you are willing for a bit of risk I'd recommend getting something from the States (whether by mail or someone to carry). My missus had a friend of hers buy a Gateway with similar specs to the Dell (I’ll check out the name) in the States. It is bar a few ultra expensive models the lightest laptop I’ve ever seen . It cost (after a tax rebate) just over 700$ (about 560 Euros) . I’ll definitely be buying my new laptop in the States notwithstanding how good the Dell has been for me. The cost of laptops (and electronic equipment in general) is a complete rip of in the UK and Ireland. If you know someone going to the States I’d actually get them to buy something for you and bring it back for you. You’re taking a bit of a risk maybe with after service but we’ve had the Gateway just over 5 months with no problems.

had a compaq evo notebad for just less than 18 months and yesterday the screen went

it's out of warranty [1 year] and nothing compaq/hp will do about it without me paying!

i spoke with a guy in the shop who said given the problem - display - and the age of the machine compared to the price of a new one, i might as well buy new! [this was over the phone mind and not as a sales pitch on his part]

i thought i could trust a name like compaq/hp but obviously not!
