best free tool to convert files into mp3 format

had a quick look on google and theres loads of sites offering free converters, so i need a bit of advice. I'm looking for the following;

1) free, and stays free - not a trial period
2) that you've used and its been simple so a numpty like me can figure how to use it
3) its not tagged onto a virus/spyware etc

well i've got it on my computer and put 6 files to change from wav to mp3 - absolutely no idea what i've done, but gonna be leaving the computer on overnight and will look at it with fresher eyes tomorrow! need sleep now!

just went out on my bike to try it out and ended up cycling about 20 miles (normally do around 10-15)

and me arse is killing me now

will have to tone down the kareoke cycling when not in the countryside though
