Default Backing up Outlook Express

My computer has been ravaged by some scumware/spyware/virus and basically my system has gone tits up >: ie. britney spears ringtone popups, toolbars disappearing, programs closing.

I've decided to reinstall windows 2000 and wipe the C drive, so have backed up all the programs I need. The thing is, I need to keep my emails from Outlook Express 6. Is there away of exporting/saving your emails or something and then reinstalling/importing them back once the system has been wiped?

PS. I have tried Spybot search and destroy, Lavasoft, AVG , Evidence Eliminator etc., but thus this b*stard thing keeps happening.

People who write these fcuking progs should be burnt. >:

Yeah it can be done. I do it every 3 months for the reasons you mention. Just follow the steps below.

Open Documents and Settings Folder – you might have to click the “view hidden folders” option in the “Tools-Folder Options” in the Toolbar as some of the folders you need are hidden.

From there open up the folder with your identity (i.e runtcrab)

From there open up the folder Local Settings

From there open up the Application Data Folder

From there Open up the Identites Folder (each Outlook Express Account opened by you when logged onh as runtcrab will be there so you might have more than one).

Open the identity you want to back up (this can be checked with one of the steps below). These folders will be named with a long list of letters and numbers.

Open the Microsoft Folder

Open the Outlook or Outlook Express Folder

Here you will see files with the extension DBX for your INBOX / OUTBOX / DELETED folders etc. You can check your identity is correct here by setting up a test folder called say “Back Up” in Outlook and if it appears here you will know it is the right identity.

Save the files to CD/ disk/memory card.

You can transfer these files into another compuer by just pasting them into the identity you set up on that one.

TWO POINTS TO WATCH FOR:

1.If you save your sent messages in Outlook for some reason they are not saved in this folder. You should just create a new folder in your inbox with your sent messages and drag them into that so you can back them up.

2. If you copy these files over an existing identity it will wipe the previous messages out (i.e if you copied an earlier Inbox worth of files over a later version the newest mails are wiped).

There are a number of programs to restore Outlook but they are all pay to use although someone might know of another.

If you have any problems with that just drop a line.

You can do teh same with your address book. It is saved in another folder (can't remember of the top of my head) but I think it branches of the Identity Folder as well
