Default What does Baptism mean for the godparents?

I need help!!!

Just had a debate with the missus.

Well in her eyes an argument, but in my eyes a healthy debate.

I have just turned 45 recently and received a bottle of scotch from my son, Ads25 as it happens , and 100% scotch as it turned out, thank god for the NBL

Anyways, alcohol aside. My brother, who lost his 12yo son to cancer in September, had a newborn daughter 8 days later. It is indeed a strange world.

Anyways, more to the point. Well he got his new daughter baptised today, christened if you like. All good, lovely day with the family.

Got home tonight, and after a few 100% scotches and coke, courtesy of Ads25, me and the missus got to discussing the Baptism shit.

Now my gorgeous 2 1/2 yo daughter got baptised last year, or the year before and my sister and her girlfriend are the godparents.

Now this is where the debate begins.

My missus thinks that if me and her die tomorrow, then my sister and her girlefriend are going to bring my daughter to be a good catcholic.

After a few times, and regaining my senses, I said...A godparents role should both of us die, is to make sure our daughter is brought up to feel safe and loved, and to be brought up in a happy environment.

So am I wrong?

If I were to die tomorrow, I would want my kids to be brought up remembering me as a father who loved them unconditionally, and to die knowing they were going to be looked after well and be loved, and no harm would come to them all going well.

To be honest, I have 4 kids, 3 boys and one girl, and I dread my little girl having to grow up the way the world is today. if someone ever hurt her, I would spend many years in jail avenging her, and miss watching her grow up, but it would have always been worth it.

I love all my kids, but having a daughter, i feel she is disadvantaged straight away because of those sick fcuks out there.

There is no law on Earth that would stop me avenging anyone who hurt my children.

Any thoughts?

Well my first 4 kids were all baptised Catholic.

From my religious background, I was under the unerstanding that the God Parents are there to help and give guidedance throughout the Childs life.

Now if we pass away, I would assume that they brought the child up in a kind and loving family way.

Now do the Godparents still go to church, If so would they still take it upon themselves to take the child to church , assuming that you had not been takng your daughter to church on a regular basis.

So many question;s that could remain unanswered.

For me so long as theybring the child up in the corrct manner with the help of you immediate family then all is well.

Kev.

Funnily enough I did mention this in the pub the other week' as you do' for some reason, think there was a christening going or something like that anyway,

Christening, to wash away the sins so they can enter heaven.
How that is appropriate to newborns?

I personally don't believe in the whole christening saga as my kids aren't christened.

I was, but then again most of the kids our age have been.

as for the next of kin thing then I think thats where a will should decide not the church.

The whole shebang of a christening/baptise is bollox.

In my eyes, godparents are there to bring your children up if you can't for some reason. Well, if they wanna bring them up Christian, it's for them to decide, but I don't think that's the main reason of having a godparent.

Custody is automatically granted to the next of kin unless stated otherwise in your Will, or if social services think the children would be at risk, so I guess it would be your sister/partners relatives who bring up the kid. The Church is powerless, so baptism means nothing.

If you want to specify somebody to look after your wealth and child until the kid grows up you need a Will. They (your relatives) act as Custodian (of your money) and Guardian, as far as I can remember.

IMO the best defence against the world today is in the first quoted paragraph. Break-down a persons spirit and it's like an invitation to all the sickos, but a sole that feels valued has in place a natural and powerful defence system.

I feel whatever a godparents role is formally it should only in affect be with this in mind. The hindering trick is in the church stuff, IMO, without going into that.
