Default Punters Lounge Own a Racehorse

I dont know if this has been brought up before, nor if its possible, but I think it could be a great idea.

Would anyone else be interested in forming, basically, a PL syndicate. We could buy the horse, send it to a trainer and then set up a private area for all the members of the syndicate. I dont know what the costs would be like nor the amount of members we could get, but we could find that out.

For many people, owning a racehorse is far too expensive and a bit of a dream. However, I am sure everyone would love to be part of a syndicate with fellow PL'ers, and it would seem more homely than just joining an ordinary syndicate.

We could maybe even use it as sponsorship and call the horse Punters Lounge or something,

Just an idea and dont know what anyone else thinks of it but I would love to hear your thoughts. I know some people think it is a waste of time as you can buy a horse and it can finish stone last time and time again. But if the costs were spread between members, maybe with an annual payment, it may not be too costly.

What do you lot think ?

I'm sure that this has been mentioned before too.

If the costs were reasonable I'd be interested in the syndicate.

i think it was just felt as though it was throwing money away down the drain ??

we would need probably a minimum of £100 a week for fees, thats £5200 a year to train the beast. On top of that are vets fees, entrance fees, transport & jockey fees.

If it runs say 10 times a year, then lets say £250 a time, thats another £2500.

£7.7k for 1 year! £20 a month subs would be £240 per member, we would only need 32 people to join it.

We also need to buy it, so thats another £5k say

£12.7k @ £240 per member = 52 people (not too bad!) or £10 a month for 104 people which may be even more appealing to the masses.

Those prices aren't that bad when spread between members. Providing it was seen more as a hobby and any returns would be a bonus, it would be slightly more appealing I feel. Basically it depends on how many members there are for wether the idea is realistic. Thanks for those figures Bowles mate.

dont quote me just yet

I have the number of Nigel Twiston Davies stable & will give them a bell to see what they charge

May be worth considering a flat horse for the AW, might be cheaper to run TBH.

£5k wont get you much these days. My old man paid £24k for his horse, it ran 8 times then got injured & thats the end of it.

I might be well out with the £5k estimate but you can google the sales & see what they go for.

Will do some research tonight and see what I can find, think the cost of buying the horse is the big thing, I dont know if anyone would be willing to pay the money and then wait for the yearly payments to cover the costs. Will have a look though, it doesnt even need to be a 2 year old, you can buy horses out of sellers for about 6/7 grand. I thnk that Methaaly went for around that and he is a decent animal. I will try to get an RP tomorrow and have a look in there too.

Anyone else know anything more about the actual costings, anyone been there and done it. If so what do you think of the idea, bearing in mind the cost will be spread.

I think the cost may depend hugely on the trainer, for example one of the top trainers like NTD/Kevin Ryan would cost more than some of the up and coming trainers e.g. Peter Grayson and the like.

Keep the thoughts coming though guys.

TBH mate, I think that would be a fitting tribute.

But then again, maybe the advertising idea would make the idea easier for PL as a company. Will see what Paul Ross says.

Ive been a syndicate member for a few years now and the costs are minimal because we only own 10% of the horses with other individuals/syndicates taking up the remainder.

I think its important to go with a trainer who looks after you with regard to feedback/info and titbits of information about their other horses.

A friend of mine has a syndicate through middleham park racing and says that he gets some excellent info and the occasionnal plot.

I know that most people will say that we should be in it for the enjoyment of racing but trust me it is nice when the trainer tells you that he strongly fancies the horses chances and you look at the sp and its 33/1

Our current trainer who I wont name is very poor with regard to feedback so if you get this off the ground I would be very interested.

Best Of Luck

P.S Think Osesame is a cracking idea

On the face of it the more established successful trainers seem to be more expensive. Mark Johnstone is £58 a day or something like that. If this does go any further we will need to talk about sponsorship etc to get some income and reclaim VAT ect but we will worry about that later. Another issue is who gets the complimentary badges etc but as I say these can be discussed IF we end up going ahead with it.

Will have another look at the prices later tonight and tally it up for 50 members, 100 members etc and see what people think. For now please continue to contribute your ideas, thought and any suggestions.

Thanks for the information and advice bobthebuilder, I agree that it is nice to get a whisper at 33/1!!

Reckon it would work out to expensive to be honest. Your looking at least £800 a month for expenses. I guess you could claim an old plodder for around 5-10k.

What about a greyhound? much cheaper and would be just as much fun..

Well it will be kind of money down the drain on the face of it, but if enough are interested and people don't drop out (always happens), then it's feesible.

As for the name, I love the fact that you want to call it Osesame, but it needs to be called PuntersLounge.com to be fair.

Brian won't be forgotten, and I'm arranging sponsorship of a race at Newcastle in his memory and I'm sure we'll have other things to remember him by.

I can certainly vouch for the fact that unless you are prepared to spend a fair bit on the horse you cant expect much of a return via winnings.

But in my 4 years of syndicate life I have done nicely from information received (excluding current trainer).

With horse racing your a step closer to winning by just knowing that your horse is gonna be trying. Also trainers talk a lot and a few times we have been told of horses in the same race that would be "having a warm up" thus reducing the field further.

The financials for my syndicate are:

Approx 25 Members
Cost Per Member/Month £20 All In (10% share in Horse)
Winners 4 (over 4 Years )
Prize Money £11000 approx (10% Share)
Badges available on raceday - Minimum of 6 - Up to 12

More interestingly we have been given winners at 9/1, 16/1, 20/1 and each way placers at 8/1, 14/1 and 33/1 twice and those are out of approximately 12 bits of info received from the stables.

Hope this helps

Would you have to be interested in horse racing to get involved? As i have no interest in it, but would pay up to a certain amount just for the craic...

Edit: I do watch Racing when there's nothing else on though ...
