| Watched Mr Brooks last night and had I not known about it being part of a planned trilogy I would have been very disappointed. It starts off great and the idea of somebody catching a serial killer on film and then blackmailing him was inspired. Also the idea of the urge to kill being genetic and passed on to his daughter and then having to get the police off the "scent of the trail". It dragged through out the middle and as a one off film choice it's just ok at best but as part of a trilogy it would be very good viewing I think.

As someone has mentioned, the idea of a serial killer being blackmailed is great, and one which they could have perhaps elaborated on, but on the whole I thought the plot was good. Not too sure how I feel about the Demi Moore 'Atwood' character and how/why Mr Brooks's felt the need to 'help' to her. I didn't really care about her if i'm honest, and felt nothing when Meeks was trying to kill her, the money seeking husband and daughter trying to prove to her dad storyline was a bit cliche and certainly didn't endear me to her any more. Talking of which, there was just a few too many coincidences (Meeks goign on the run at the 'right' time, Mr Brooks' daughter carrying the 'gene' AND carriyng out a murder etc etc) but thinking about it more, they just stayed on the right side of plausible. I thought Marshall was a great character and i'm sure everyone can relate to that voice (although hopefully not as weird!). Mr Smith was a bit too fcuked up to feel sorry for, and there wasnt a lot of charactrisation there to understand why he wanted to get into Mr Brooks' line of work. Nothign i've read suggests it is a trilogy, i've read there could be further films depending on the success of the first. I wouldn't be too disappointed if there wasn't and certainly think this film can stand up on it's own. I was also wondering why it warranted the '18' certificate until the scissors and the spade scenes!!! 7.5/10

| Eh? So is that it then? ![]() I thought the whole idea was to discuss the films afterwards, rather than a few half arsed, 1 sentence comments? Can't see the point in just watching a list of films, i can do that myself.

![]() Think it's more about introducing others to classics/cult films they may have missed the first time. In any case I really enjoyed Mr Brooks. Completely different to see Kevin Costner taking on that kind of role as he' usually the all American/average American good guy, wholesome to the last and determined to uncover the truth/put the world to rights. As has already been said it's good to see him making a decent comeback after suffering alot of unfair critique. Thought the way he would talk to William Hurt (Marshall) throughout the film, which was obviously his dark half, was a nice touch and it was always interesting to note that nobody seemed to be aware when he was talking to Marshall so was he talking to himself or was the even his part of the conversation just going round in his head? Like the way he turned on a sixpence at the end and just as you thought it might peter out into a bland and wholly unsatisfactory end....out came the spade! Was also at first shocked by what appeared to be the ending and then pleased to see that it wasn't at all and were probably....just getting started. Where are you then? | There is an issue I have with the new film. It doesn't appear to be out on DVD yet in the UK meaning I and some others will be unable to get hold of a copy. Care to choose again mileni? Make it a classic that you absolutely love where maybe not everybody would have seen it first time round. A film we and the mass majority missed but relly shouldn't have? And if you can't think of one of those, just go with a good old favourite whihc brings back fond memories. Not trying to dictate, just go with your instinct and use the old imagination ![]() The floor, as they say, is yours.... |
