Smile Previously home to the film club - now it's all about the reviews!

Thread has suffered due to various reasons but the idea is a good one and hopefully there is still enough interest to make it work

Just finished watching the recommended film and have to say I really enjoyed it. Won't give the plot away to those who haven't watched it yet but the image of Lola running through the city with her flame red hair I thought was very iconic and the image will stay with me.

The only part of the film I thought was strange was in the third part where Manni catches up with the tramp takes the cash and then hands over a loaded gun. I then realised the reason for this is that it suggests that he's handing over temptation. I'll leave it at that for now till the others have watched it.

Good 1st choice of film it must be said hope there's many more to follow.

(Oh yes and I found Lola really quite attractive definitely something sexy about her)

I first watched this film by chance on BBC 2 I think. Missed the first 10 minutes but was captured by it’s originality.
I feel I must explain at this stage why I am such a film fan, and hate Hollywood in general. I used to watch the same old, same old shit and was getting bored of it. I slowly watched the odd “strange film” and found them much more entertaining. Then a now mate of mine moved into my halls at uni and he was doing a scriptwriting, he in turn introduced me to some different films and I have never looked back. In fact I hate watching films that aren’t even slightly original or just hollywood stories.
Lola Rennt was one of the films I watched and it changed my viewpoint on films totally, even now.
The camera work, score and direction is pretty much different to a lot of modern films you would see. The story in its essence is fairly basic, but its enough to keep you gripped throughout easily.
Some talented actors are involved. Moritz Bleibteu plays Lolas boyfriend who calls on her help (from the amazing film Das Experiment), and the now famous Franka Potente (The Bourne Identity) who plays Lola, a girlfriend desperate to help her boyfriend who has bitten off more than he can chew.
As far as the film goes I don’t know much more than to say the soundtrack is spot on, really causes haste, and the direction could not be better. When i first saw this I had not seen another film that had tried anything like this, or pulled it off in this manner.
Tom Tykwer really established himself as a top director here, and was the only person who wanted to and was allowed to direct Suskinds novel, “Perfume: A Story Of A Murderer”
This was always going to be a difficult novel to transfer to film but he did a decent enough job, and although the book was 100 times better this was to be expected.
In this day and age all I really look for in films is originality, and this brought it. Too many remakes and clichés, but this broke the mould and is a must see in my opinion.

It really has been a while since I saw it and so will have to wait for a refresher (too many other films to watch again) before I delve in. i'll say now that I remember watching and remember enjoying it....to a degree

I enjoyed it very much so. I think it's over 10 yrs old and the idea of the film and the cinematography were very original. I wouldn't say it's a classic but it is very good and a great film to kickstart the club.

Originality is so important now though
So many crap rehashes of films

the Departed was a good remake, but how can people say its their favourite film? Its a remake! The concept is copied.......

Not quite sure how we got on to the Departed but irrespective of it being a remake I thought it was a cracking film! Dicaprio has really grown as an actor and Jack is his normal hammy self.

Not my favourite film by a long chalk but loved it anyway....and I have seen the original....infernal affairs...which I recommend to anyone they should check out.

Whatever makes you say such a thing

Don't worry, we'll knock the members in to shape or just have to do some mass culling

Would be easier if I was able to mass pm (in order to kick some arse of our stay away members) but that's a benefit restricted only for mods.

In all seriousness, if we leave it over the weekend to give some of our stragglers a chance to catch up and then irrespective, call time on the first film. Debate a bit and then move on to the next.

It's all gravy

Remember though: If you don't show up for others choices, you don't get to make one yourself. I think that's fair

You sure? You simply put more than one username in the To box. Same as sending an email to multiple persons.

Yeah that's it, times up otherwise this is rapidly turning into a farce and will have to be archived soon.

Those who've watched it and yet to comment step forth during the day.

Tonight, i'll look at how many participating members we are left with and nominate next in line to choose.

Classic example of a good idea gone bad at the moment

Question Re: PL Film Club - Watching Run Lola Run...sometime this year hehe!

Well....I wouldn't have taken this to happen. The book club is chugging on with a bit of interest while the film club is in danger of dieing on it's arse!

Let's just hope that as we move forward, those who expressed initial interest will filter in.

Until then, on with the show.

We have 3 participating members right now Therat was first to choose so I believe that makes it your turn now Steve'O
