Books? Books?

Ah I remember those, are they those big things with paper in them?

Jesus Ive read 3 books in my whole life:
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Football factory by john King
and Skeleton Crew by Stephen King.

I remember at school being told we had to read the Hobbit for an English test, I got to page 3 and thought fook this........writing those lines 1000 times was a lot less painful

Yeah mate i'd be up for this. In fact was going to suggest somethign similar the other day, but, er forgot!

I used to really love films but not as accesible in practical temrs as books - i generally read for 2ish hours per day, mostly on a night in bed but also at lunch hour, between hours of 7.30 and 9 on a monday!!!

But yeah, good idea and it'll be a good way to expand my literary horizons . . ..

1 month should be OK between reads.

Great idea mate.

Book Clubs???

Fcuk that for a lark.

I started to read a book in 1997, and at the start of chapter 4 it said '15 years later.'

2012 is a long way off, it'd better be worth the fcuking wait.

Sounds good! I'm about to start studying an Open University law degree so might be a bit pushed for time but I'll try and keep up with the book club!

I'd like to be in this, last book I read was "Catcher in the rye" a truly fantastic book that you'd easily finish in a couple of days and leave you wanting a lot more.

I've always enjoyed reading.
However normally only SF / Fantasy.
Currently ploughing through my sister's collection of Garth Nix books.

I'd be in. I go through phases with books where I'll read 4 - 6 in a month and then nothing for months.

How will it work, take turns at recommending something?

I was given The Damned United for Christmas which is a fictional account of Brian clough's time at Leeds. I haven't read it yet, but by all accounts it's very good.

I normally read Sci Fi/Horror, but will throw the one above in the ring and look fiorward to expanding my horizons.

Question Re: If we can have a film club then surely a book club is also viable

Well from looking at the above i'm glad it won't just be me slowing things down.

Best thing we can do is not to be too rigid about it I think. A film takes a couple hours where as a book...with the best will in the world....a couple of days if you have nothing to do and can't put it down.....a couple of months if you get sidetracked.

I'm actually in the middle of something now which will take me another 2-3 weeks haha!!!

Who wants to start anyway?

If I start i'll just recommend one of the many fine books from my collection which will allow me to carry on and finish the current one. If somebody else wants to go first....you may need to cut me some slack and allow me a while longer haha!!

I think as far as choosing who does what and what we all read the best thing is for each memer to have their turn at choosing and irrespective of whether it's your favourite genre or not you at least have to give it a go. Your est shot so to speak!

So if we leave it until the weekend just to see if we can pick up a few more stragglers and then maybe set about things from there.

What do you all think?

Approx 1 month sounds good but don't want to impose rigid deadlines. It's not school after all

Yep, all sounds good mate.

I think 1 month is a good time scale (fast readers wont have to wait too long to discuss if they finish early, slow readers can discuss as much as they've read or chapter by chapter), but I do think we need some sort of rigidity as otherwise i can imagine things will become a bit dosjointed.

Perhaps we shoudl start with a shortish book first time round. This will a) give us all a gentle introduction and b) finish earlyish so we can run it calendar month -> calendar month. People reckon thats a good idea? Just think it's better to know where we all stand . . .

I'm looking forward to it, I generally read non fiction or historical fiction so looking forward to reading somethign a bit different.

yeah my mum is a fan of King and James Herbert etc and has every single book king has done.

I was tempted to have a crack at The Green Mile which was spread out over 5 mini books.

Its not that I dont like to read books it just I havent got time although Ive know to have had a read on Holiday but after the 7th beer the words get jumbled up.
