Default Microsoft Security Patch

Look at page 114 on CEEFAX and see what's happened.

DON'T DOWNLOAD THE SECURITY PATCH !!

The security patch Microsoft have sent to PCs left me with a connection but unable to get fcuk all with it.

All I got was 'connection timed out' rhwn I tried toget on here.

I tried all the addresses in my address bar and got the same result every time.

Switched to IE browser and got the same again.

Then I phoned 2 others who use Mozilla and they have the same problem.

I had to use the System Restore facility to go back two days in order to get online.

Obviously it worked as I'm here now.

If you haven't got System Restore or a 'download removal' programme, as far as I can tell, you're gonna be fcuked, so don't download it.

No idea what KB means

I turned on my PC as usual and it came up on the screen to download it now or later.

I did it immediately as I had already seen Page 114 on CEEFAX.

Then it said that to take effect my PC had to be rebooted, and the option 'now' or 'later'.

I didn't want want to do it while racing was on this afternoon so I opted for 'now'

It shut down, then restarted, but when I clicked to get here or on to Betfair, I got nothing.

One of my mates has deleted this download, and he's back on line now as well

Well this morning I downloaded 3 of the 4 updates Windows proposed - downloaded KB951748 (Windows XP safety), KB953465 (unwanted e-mail filter) and KB953432 (Office Outlook 2003 update) - and I've not had any problems after resetting my PC.

The only one I didn't download was the Malicious Software Removal Tool KB890830 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/890830), as it came up with some licence agreement I had to accept so I decided not to bother. Presumably if there is a problem with the Windows updates, it must be with that part of it.

Can't see what Ceefax page 114 has got to do with it though - "Rapper traumatised by gun arrest"

Right, a quick google for KB951748 problem and it looks like it is a problem with ZoneAlarm firewall (older versions not affected apparently).

The KB update replaces a system file to do with networking, Zonealarm doesn't recognise this new file as the checksum is now different, and so prevents your tinternet etc from working properly.

The quick solution seems to be to set Zonealarm to Medium security until a fix is sorted.

That's the one, Stewie

I've got Zone Alarm.

One of my mates has Norton and his PC got fcuked by the patch as well.

He deleted the download after I phoned him this morning and he's okay now.

Not sure if it's connected but I have been having quite a few problems since Saturday.

My laptop has been freezing when I open my browser or try to download any torrents.

The mouse works but nothing else.

A patch came down this morning and it's been ok since.
