Default Credit card charges for gambling transaction

Got my credit card statement in the post yesterday along with a change of contract slip type thing. Halifax are now charging me £3 for every gambling transaction, what's all that about.

In the future will they charge me £1.50 to buy groceries, Dvds or music £1.75, toiletries £1.20?

yeah mate its bollocks!!
its aclled a cash advance-happened to me aswell
the cheeky fcukers class gambling transactions as cash withdrawals rather than as purchases so incur teh charges, i think it s 3%

Hmmm. Lloyds TSB/Mastercard have started charging me for gambling transactions as well now but it doesn't say a damn thing on my online bank statement.

It's cost me £8.23 to use £125. Fooking cnuts.

I'll be making a complaint when I go into a branch today but most likely to deaf ears.

Gambling with your credit card? Not worth it. It's almost as bad as being an American trying to claim any winnings in a US casino.

If you want to avoid these rip off charges, use a debit card.

Well apart from mustering an equally childish "DUH!!" as a response, I will from now on (unless I really, really, really need to have a bet).

It's just that the credit card companies haven't been forthcoming about being so sneaky and stealthy (I didn't get charged anything in June).

If they told us in advance (and I certainly don't think they have) about betting being the same as a cash advance, I wouldn't use a credit card to put money into a bookmaker's account.

I'll probably check my paper statement whenever it arrives but I'll be going to the bank and demanding some answers. I'll probably end up being frustrated and that it'd have been an absolute waste of my time but I'm not ringing the 0870 number at my own expense when I can get through to them on a phone at branch of a Lloyds TSB.

Surprised only just noticed, i was charged back last year by Abbey £3 min & a certain % after that. It was with Betfair i placed the money into.

Its a pity as i always used to open my free bets with a credit card as it was useful to take the £50 hit etc

Wont be long before we go back to cash in betting shops !!!

You will have definitely been told in advance. You have to bve informed of all changes to your terms and conditions. Likelihood is you did what most people do when they get a letter advising them of changes to the T&Cs - throw it straight in the bin.

This has been common practice with loads of cards for a fair while now. Egg changed their terms and conditions almost 2 years ago I think.

It's been well publicised that charges were coming in for gambling transaction's and we had a few threads on this last year.
Just type into the search function "Credit card charges".
Wierd though cos it was supposed to come in half-way through last year.

Might just be the case, Paul that I didn't look at the updated T&Cs whenever the hell it was that they bothered to send them to me. I've had a look online at Lloyds TSB's website and it doesn't mention anything about cash advances/gambling...mind you, I can't fooking find the T&Cs.

I've got last month's credit card statement in front of me and I've accrued no interest from gambling transactions. Guilty because of complacency and naivety.

Looks like I'm not the only one who got caught out by Lloyds TSB:

http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/....html?t=509002

Went into Lloyds TSB an hour and a half or so ago and they said charges for gambling transactions started since July 1st and that they didn't show up on my online credit card bill because they'll show up on my paper one that they'll send through the post instead (WHAT!? What the hell's that about!? Why not tell me now that you're charging me daily interest as well!?).

I probably read your message at the worst possible time, Col as it caught me in an absolutely foul mood. It just came across as smartarsed and unnecessary aftereventing rather than a helpful tip and as though someone was telling me to lock the door when the horse had already bolted.

Sorry Col.
