Default BBC told to improve UK coverage

tbh, i think i would have liked to have seen a little more backbone here - we have news programmes specifically for regional news so why the need to increase news stories of "where I live"? exactly how long can you sit through "cat stuck up tree" stories for?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7447985.stm

are we becoming too insular or are we constantly watching irrelevant news?

Thanks Ali, I'd forgotten about this.

I'd say the problem is that with the way news is broadcast in the UK is that we either get the national 'world affairs' type of news which although it may be newsworthy, isn't really relevant to everyday lives OR we get the 'cat stuck up a tree' from the local broadcasters.

I'm sure there is a middle ground somewhere.

When I saw the title to this thread the first thing in my mind was "Yeah and the licence fee will go up"

i think thats taken as a given these days - regrdless whether its justified, the cost will go up

I personally see no need for a license in the first place - you cant say its advert free: simply not advertising consumer products.

Anybody else old enough to remember the BBC in the 60s?

In things like Coronation Street, branded products (like Heinz Ketchup etc) were wrapped in brown paper on the kitchen table, and nobody got ciggies out of a recognisable packet.
