Default Amsterdam

I'm off to the Dam on Friday for the weekend to celebrate my 21st and just wanted to pick your brains for the best places to go and things to do and see?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

The tour of Heineken brewery. A longish time ago it cost some 2 guilders and included whatever amount of beer you were able to down after the tour in the brewery's own pub (within 30 minutes). And the tour itself is interesting too.

Van Gogh's museum.

Any coffee shop (very colourful boats and other places too)

Red Light district

China Town

etc.

just walk around the centre and you'll see.

Had a pretty wild night there a few years back, been working down in Den Bosch, and got the train up to the dam at lunchtime to catch a evening flight back to Scotland. We were "gutted" to find out that snow/fog had closed the airport and we had to spend Friday night in Amsterdam on full company expenses.

Try and get to a tradional dutch "brown bar" for some great beers. Then pop across the canel for some window shopping. The thing I like about Amsterdam is that it's reasonably compact, most things in the city are within walking (staggering) distance.

Hi Datapunter.

Well basically, there are 4 of us going. 3 lads aged 20 and i'll be 21 on Saturday.

We are arriving early evening tommorow and the plan is to head straight out to the pubs and have a heavy nights drinking, maybe a club aswell depending on there general rules about casual clothing?

Are there any good clubs that allow casuals, or should we just stick to the pubs/bars?

On Saturday I'll be getting the lads up as early as poss, if thats not possible I'll going out on my own to do some sightseeing. Considering I won't have a hell of alot of time to do this what would you suggest is the best way to see the city and places definately not to miss?

I have heard a canal boat trips are good.

Saturday late afternoon i'd like to get myself in a cafe to try some of the local delicacy's and hoipefully get a 'special' birthday cake made up. So if you could advise a couple of good cafes to visit that would be great. Then Saturday night back to the pubs/clubs.

When do people usually go out and how late are the pubs/bars generally open?

Also strip clubs, I wouldn't mind visting one thats not too expensive but not full off fat hoe's.

Any advice is much appreciated!

may i suggest a bit of moderation, you'll have a much better time if you simply pace yourselves a bit, otherwise you can forget about doing anything on saturday

Where are you staying btw ?

General rule is that cafe's and pubs close at 4:00 on friday's and saturdays, after that there are a few night pubs and disco's. Depending on the area they may be open until 5:00 but you won't be able to get a drink after 4:00. I'll assume you'll be pissed by then

I suggest when you arrive you check in where you are staying and make your way to one of 2 places, ( possibly both ) :
Leidseplein
Rembrandplein
( plein = square )

Those are the centres for going out, plenty of pubs/bars and late night disco's. Different disco's have different rules about clothing but most will accept casual if you look reasonable. Best, and biggest ones, are spread over the city but a few good ones are on the Rembrandplein.

Saturday, day time,

They are brilliant,.... when celebrating your 60th birthday Wouldn't advice that. Too much to do and see, just have a look on the site http://www.iamsterdam.com/ and check a few places. Nearly everything is in walking distance, and the trams will get you from one side of town to the other in less than 1 hour.

Plenty of coffeshops around, see if you can find one called "The Bulldog" , there's a few of them around and they are the original ones. But if you stick to the red light district, a street called "Warmoestraat" you can't go wrong. ( when you walk out of central station its straight ahead across the water then left into the area then first street right. can't miss it, one of the best known street in Amsterdam )

If you walk through Warmoestreet coming from central station then The Red Light district is everything to your left.

Well 2 places to recommend,
http://www.casarosso.com/info/index.phtml
http://www.channels.nl/amsterdam/banaan.html
Usually you can make a deal with the doorman to see the show, about an hour, and you get a number of drinks, sometimes all you can drink in 1 hour. As its saturday it will be busy so you'll have to pay the fixed price.

Now then, if you're going to go for a bit of "personal entertainment" and you've got the budget.... http://www.yabyum.nl/
As you've mentioned "casual" and "not too expensive" i'll just leave you with a small piece of advice: tell the ladies what you want and agree on a price BEFORE you go in ! Standard price these days is 50 euro for a quick suck and ****. 100 euro should get you half an hour. If they ask more the're probably not worth it

Naturally we expect a full and detailled report !

! don't take pictures, you'll get arrested !

Actually if its a strip you're after you can ask the ladies in the windows, quite few of them will give you a private show. They call it a "vibrator show", well that speaks for itself eh

I'm staying in the Amstel Botel having stayed in there last year, reasonable prices and close to the City and next to a fantastic Chinese floating restaraunt.

Many thanks for taking the time Datapunter!

I'm staying at 'Bobs Hostel', apparently situated right in the center. £14 a night. I'm used to staying in hostels now after travelling Europe last year, can't go wrong with a bit of cheap and nasty. The fact that theres usually plenty of young ladies sharing a room with you is a bonus.

Iv'e noted down the places you have mentioned and will be visiting them as and when we come accross them.

As for those websites you gave me, the Bananenbar sounds quality, but what the hell is that Casaross? A porn theatre or does it have live sex shows aswell?

How much will the fixed price be to get into these places?

Yab Yum look's . But I bet its bloody expensive, just to get in!

Cheers again for your advice and of course I will fill you in with all the gory details on Monday. That's if I make it back!

Casa Rosso is live but more like a theatre show, bananabar is pretty much in your face , can't remember the price but its pretty reasonable considering all you can drink in an hour is included.

Bobs is just 5 min from the red light district, walk out of central station, bob's at the right, red light district to the left.

Have fun and happy birthday

Try it and you'll have to make a run for it
The girls don't like, not at all, and if i'm not mistaken you could actually get arrested for it.

This would actually be an excellent way to commit suicide
