Default Re: BOOKIES

Thanx Norfolk for alerting me to this. Busy week this one, so didn't notice.

I did used to run a number of Bookies (as Manager) first as Independants and then as Sranley Racing.

Personally I got out as all the big firms are interested in is guaranteed profit. This means constant promotion of Irish Lottery, 49s, Rapido, Casino Machines, Virtual Racing etc etc.

Completely took the fun out of it for me. If, however I was starting my own business - ask the customers what they want. If they want a Fruit Machine or 2 you'd be foolish not to giv em one. It's guaranteed profit.

Giv the Punters sumthin they can't get from Willbrokes etc. I used to run odds on Local Sunday League's (which I played in so I wasn't betting blind!) to about 150/60%. People didn't even notice. It was sumthin they wanted to bet on (mainly their own team) so it was a good little earner.

NOt being remotely racist but - if there's a chinese element to your clientel then you've got it made! They can't help them selves! Gambling is part of their culture. They hit gd runs like any1 else and u've got to hae balls of steel but u should cum out on top most times!!

Try to make sure u can always pay hte punter in cash. It looks bad when u can't and u just kno there gonna go bak to the pub and start referin to u as sum cnut that was happy to take their bet and not pay it out!!!

Don't have a clue what the price of SIS (is it still called that?) is now but it always was completely extortionate. Make sure u r competely aware of it b4 u start.

Kiss customers arses and don't disagree with their selections. Make em tea and coffee when they come in and make tm think ther your m8. Go out on the beer wiv em if their that sort of croud and dont resent payin em. In the long term your gonna cum out on top... Also be seen to be havin a bet yourself (even if your not!) and never appear to be well on top! eg. Do not turn up to work in a Merc that they've paid 4!! (it'll only get keyed in any case!)

Get sum decent insurance and have a maximum payout that is comparable with your rivals. Don't kno too much about htis as it was out of my handz.

Awful thing to say but - do not trust your staff. I travelled around 30 shops all over the South West and worked with over 100 cashiers. Was stitched up by 2 (majorly - Police involved - and 2 others!) Don't let em settle the bets and get a camera to photo the bets as u take em.

If u hav found the rite area I truly believe u can makeit pay handsomly.

Good Luk if u go 4 it - Let us kno how u get on.

Apologies if any of the above soundz like I'm tellin u to suk eggs! If ther's anythin specific u want to kno u can mail me or just ask here. Gd Luk!

Cheers Saint

Can't believe you could get away with running books of 150-160%

Did you ever get a day off then?

A 9 screen S.I.S. set up costs roughly £6k a year.

Now you need Turf TV, which the BIG 3 weren't going to have, but they changed their minds, another £7k a year.

Basically everything The Saint says in my opinion is spot on.

The main issue I would say is to research the area fully to see if there is any custom that you can lure away from your proposed rivals.

Punters are very much creatures of habit, so that probably means that at this time the drinkers in the pubs you mention most probably will not be gamblers, well daily/regular gamblers I mean by that.

Get as many FOBT's as you can, I think the max allowed now is four per shop (I may be wrong), but they are where the money is.

I wish you well.

Find a location with plenty of Chinese, they bet like mad men. You will make more money off having 4 FOBTs than you do taking bets.
