Default online vs. telephone bets

why is there always a higher limit for telephone bets(compared to online bets) with the online books who have both options available?

Default Probably.....

Probably because it's quicker to get on on-line than it is by the phone.

If your trying to get on a horse which the bokkie in question is a stand out price you've got little chance of gettin thru on the phone. Couldn't get enuf on if I didn't have the net.

Probably the highest limits (although I've bemoane them in the past) are in the shops themselves. I'm lucky to have a Corals, Hills & Ladbrokes within walking distance of each other tho I'm sure one will shut in the next couple of years.

Other thing to consider is opening accounts on-line in say your girlfriends name with her bank details!!! The Mrs is currently having her stakes restricted by Bet Direct and she's never had a bet in her life!!

funny stuff about Mrs.Saint

but i don't think the limits in the shop are that high. i mean i've seen telephone limits going up to 1.000.000 pounds(V.Chandler)

anyway, how high are the shop limits? in the case you're not on their black list that is. how much would they accept on a single from a big european league ? 1000? 10000? 100000?

Default Horses...

With the greatest of respect Adrian, try getting that much on a horse at VC that their best price about!!

I'm not sure about the footy to be honest with u. Betfair would be the obviuos place to get larger amounts on altho their often not that competitive (after commission) on Favs in Soccer.

I guess I just take maximum stakes as part of the battle although some sort of consistency would be appreciated. SkyBet (usually v good) only let me have £25 on 14/1 & 28/1 shots today and £50 on an 11/1. I have no doubt that if I was backing something they wern't best price over I'd have been aloud a few thousand on 'cos they can always lay off anything they don't want to lay from me.

Hills only let me have £150 when I wanted £500 on Wednesday (shop) and Ladbrokes offered me 10/3 when the price advertised was 5/1!! They withdrew a 12/1 shot and chopped about 3 horses b4 they opened. From time to time they all piss me off!! Couldn't get a penny on with VC on the same selection at 12/1. They didn't give me a clue what the max bet was and by the time I was down to trying £30 the price had changed.

All part of the game I 'spose. Wankers, the lot of them

i never bet on horses...footy almost exclusively

but i agree with the wankers part

so anyway, does anyone have any idea what the limits are for a single bet on a game from england, scotland, germany,italy....the big leagues(well maybe not the scotish one:p )? i mean in the highstreet betshops. i'm interested mainly in the big 3 .

oh, and one more thing: so the limits depend on the possible winnings, not on how big the stake is? i mean you could probably get a lot more on celtic at 1.15 than on some horse at 35 or something, right?

There is no definitive answer to how much you can get on. If you can beat them they will restrict your stakes, if you are a big loser you will be able to get as much as you like, they are not going to cut their own throats, are they?

As far as unmanaged accounts are concerned, and that applies to most of us, you are correct. There will be a bigger limit online fro shorter prices, the liability is controlled, not the stake.

Powers to take an online example often have a maximum payout on Non Premiership games of 500 Euros but you can get on for more (in terms of payout in the cash shops). The most I've ever had on a single bet that (was a hedge on another bet) had to be placed in two different Ladrkoes shops because they knoocked back the full stake and wouldn't accept the full amount (low three figures) at the posted odds. My sister placed the balance of the bet in another Ladborkes less than 25 miles away where they told her she could put the whole amount on. Again I don't really know much of teh mechanics of the shops but I would imagien that the manager has a certain latitude based on who you are and their experience with you. I'd imagine each bookie has guidelines but they can be very much moveable feasts. In the introduction to hie last book "Geoff Harvey" who claims to be (and quite possibly is I hasten to add) a successful football punter spoke about the practical difficulties of getting bets on / even having your bets accepted if you acquired the reputation as a "winner".

I think its probably not a problem for most punters. When in doubt read the Roald Dahl story about "Henry Sugar" for some tips on what to do if you become too succussful down the High Street

Story in the Scottish press the other day about a punter who had £150,000 at 1/2 on Celtic to beat Kaunas the other night with bet365. Seems a staggering amount on such a match.

They did say that he often bets in large amounts on football so can only guess he loses more than he wins. Wonder if an "out of the blue" punter would have been able to get anything like that amount on?

Adrian, a managed account is one which the bookmaker will have imposed special limits on because the punter is recognised as a winning one.

Odds (or any one else),

How successful do you reckon that you need to be before you become recognised as a winning punter?

dosh, that's what i'd like to know too,but i guess that it depends on the size of the book...so it's all relative...hill's or centrebet or other large ones will most likely "let you win" a lot more than a @#%$ booker established on some island in the middle of the ocean...methinks,anyway...
