Horse Selection Help

I wondered if anybody could offer me advice on horse selection. I am looking to find horses that have odds of 5/1 or more and stand a good chance of placing maybe even pinching a win.

I currently look for races where the horse is priced at 5/1 and is 2nd favourite with as large as gap to the price of the 2nd favourite. This selection method has provided the following from 24 bets;

13 Losers
6 Places
4 Winners
1 Non Runner

The above has resulted in a profit of 38 points, however I would like to tighten up on the number of losers.

Should I be looking at race types, horse stats, no. of runners, etc. I would like to get more of a succes than I am getting now.
