Possible bug

I thought I'd report this as I've seen it a lot.

Seems to be something do with the session handling of the forum software, at least that is my best guess.

After editing posts, the session regularly goes wrong, leading to a 404 http error. After editing and then saving the edit, and repeating, the following message sometimes occurs when trying to continue browsing normally within the site. I think it might occur when the save button is pressed before the page has fully loaded.


Browser version is IE 6.0

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

i've been getting that a bit too, but thought it was my computer playing up

I'm assuming that the site is based on a bulletin board system that has been resold various times. It may well be that there is a software update from the vendor that would solve the issue.

my mate has built me a new computer which i've started using since sunday, so will wait and see if the message comes up again - might point towards a site problem or my computer.

I'll see if I can replicate the behaviour on a couple of machines at work this week and report back.

Just tested using work machines using

Linux with Firefox - result ok, no problem detected.
Windows XP with IE 6.0 - result ok, no problem detected.

In both cases the network was very fast with virtually no delay in loading page items. I think the problem probably comes when network speeds are low, and editing changes are saved before pages have fully loaded. Or possibly when site traffic is high.

I've retested this using Firefox on the machine that was giving problems with IE 6. No problems with Firefox, which is sweet as you like, while the issue continues with that machine with IE 6.

It seems very likely that this issue is specific to IE, perhaps due to an interaction with some other software installed on the host machine.

Therefore, my recommendation is that if you experience a similar problem, try downloading Firefox and give it a try.

I've also found that it seems generally much more responsive than IE 6 generally.

I have had this problem too the past couple of days. However, it occured for me when I first tried to get onto the site. I tried it through the link in my favourites, google and also typing in the web address but I still had no success. This happened for about 1/2 an hour and I thought the website was down. I then also tried to access PL's sister site Sports Punter, when I tried this, I got the same error message. Other websites were still working at this time and I was having no problems.

If it helps, I will try to save a screenshot the next time this problem arises.

I believe there's some ongoing work on the site at the moment which may cause short outages from time to time. I've encountered the same problem recently too.

Yeah we are upgrading the security on the server so it might cause a few gliches from time to time until its fully sorted.

I've had the same problem, only on IE6...

We'll see if the server upgrade fixes it, but it also happened to me this morning (about an hour ago) so if there was an update last night it didn't get it...

It could be a javascript/IE problem, we all know what a "quality" browser IE6 is....

I rarely use IE6 anymore, and I haven't had this problem. At the moment, it would appear to be an IE6 problem.
