Default Rugby League: Super League XIII Outright

The 13th Super League begins at Headingley on Saturday night. I've been looking at the outrights for a few weeks now and have come up with these 4. Will do each one in separate posts so I can include odds. I'll start with the Grand final outright.

2pts ew Wigan Warriors to win Super League XIII Grand final 12/1 Skybet

It could be argued only tiredness and matches catching up with them in the playoffs stopped Wigan winning the grand final last season because going into the playoffs and the 1st 2 weeks of the playoffs they were the form side. Their comeback against Bradford in the 1st game of the playoffs will live in the memory for a long time. They have a coach in Brian Noble who knows how to win Grand finals. He won them with Bradford and he's stamped his mark on this Wigan side now. The signing of Andy Coley is a good one and strengthens a very strong forward line and bringing Karl Pryce back from the other side and Richie Mathers back to England could prove shrewd moves. In Trent Barrett, Wigan have the best player in Super League bar nobody and if he and Thomas Leuluai link up well this season the Warriors will be very difficult to stop and come Old Trafford in October, the 12/1 on Wigan winning Super League could look very big.

10pts Hudderfield to make the playoffs 6/4 Bet365

I very rarely stake 10pts on a season long outright but this price is just crazy. Huddersfield finished last season in 5th place and while I accept they've lost 2 key players in Brad Drew and Robbie Paul, they've signed well in Luke Robinson, David Hodgson who is sure to score tries, and Kiwi Paul Whatuira. Put those in a side with Chris Thorman, Ron Jensen and Kevin Brown in the backs and the likes of Stephen Wild, Eorl Crabtree and Ryan Hudson giving them good go forward this Huddersfield side won't disappoint too often. They may not have the class or consistency of the big 4 but I'd fancy them to be more consistant than Warrington and better than Hull and I definitely see the Giants being in the 6 at the end of the season.

1pt ew P.Wellens Super League XIII Top Tryscorer 25/1 Totesport

Quite simply, from full back, Paul Wellens is a try machine. He's scored 17, 18 and 19 tries in the last 3 seasons and was tied for 2nd in the charts behind Henry Fa'afili last season. Fa'faili is now at Biarritz in Rugby Union so he's out of the way giving Wellens a better chance of top scoring. Wellens' support play is out of this world and in a Saints side who's motto is to attack, attack and then attack a bit more Wellens is sure to get loads of chances to go over. He's always supporting a break and his positional sense is arguably 2nd to none. He's always on the scene in the try scorers table and at 25/1 he is a great price to finally top the charts. Brent Webb and Danny Maguire will doubtlessly get a hatful for Leeds but they spread their tries out with Donald, Senior and Burrow often getting their fair share too and while Kevin Penny is tipped as the new star of Rugby League after the way he burst onto the scene last year, Matt King doesn't arrive with his try scoring reputation by offloading to his winger! Wellens is always on the scene when Saints attack though and he could just beat them all.
